  1. Still not sure what the discrepancy is that you're referring to. Yes, Marvel was publishing X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants, Excalibur, and Wolverine, but that's it. X-Men Annual #14 takes place after the events of #265-267...but ASM #252 takes place after the events of Secret Wars #8. But the black costume first made its appearance in ASM #252, which no one (rationally) disputes, regardless of in-story continuity. Claremont and the Simonsons all worked on DOFP, and Gambit had clearly been designed at that point. "The events in this story take place BEFORE (or AFTER) thus and such an issue" was very common in the era, and I'm sure no one thought twice about it. Remember...creators don't give a hoot about things like "first appearances and their value on the aftermarket." It wouldn't have been a problem to have scheduled DOFP, in which Gambit played a very insignificant role, prior to the events of #265-267, with no thought to the "official" introduction of Gambit. In fact, other characters had similar confusing introductions, but they didn't become "superstars" like Gambit. PS. The "Gambit Guild" needs an editor, desperately.
  2. I'm pretty sure he doesn't speak. If anyone believes annual #14 "came out in error", they are welcome to refer to the US Copyright information posted above, and provide whatever documentation there is to support such a claim. I know this "error" business has been floated around for quite some time, but I've yet to see any concrete proof from anyone....it may have been an invention by those wishing to suppress Annual #14, who knows?
  3. There was no error in publication...the books came out as they were meant to....unless we say that the entire DOFP storyline came out "sooner than it should have", by which time Marvel had already committed (which, still, doesn't make too much sense.) This is easily demonstrated by the ASM #252/Secret Wars #8 "problem." By publication, ASM #252 came out months and months before. 7 months, to be exact. But story-wise, the first time we "meet" the symbiote is in SW #8.
  4. Yes, the first published appearance of Gambit..by several weeks...is X-Men Annual #14.
  5. I think it would be an uphill battle convincing casual readers that Ann. 14 is a first appearance when we see in this panel Storm (who was a 'reverted pre-teen' in issue 266) is now an adult and telling the events of issues 265 - 267. It appears that the events of annual 14 came after the events of UXM 265-267.... So (since UXM was biweekly at this time) Annual 14 came out a month early? The events referenced don't refer to the chronological distribution of the book. Annual #14 came out before #267, and there's no question that it was supposed to, since Annual #14 was part four of a four part story. Harras would have known, if not had the finished work in front of him, to have made that editorial note in Annual #14. Here's the info (and, in fact, jives well with my memory): Fantastic Four Annual #23 (Part 1): Issues Registered: v. 1, no. 23, 1990. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-05-08; Reg. 1990-06-19; TX0002845922 X-Factor Annual 5 (Part 2): Issues Registered: v. 1, no. 5, 1990. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-05-15; Reg. 1990-06-19; TX0002842962 New Mutants Annual #6 (part 3) Issues Registered: v. 1, no. 6. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-05-22; Reg. 1990-06-19; TX0002841988 X-Men Annual #14 (part 4): Issues Registered: v. 1, no. 14, 1990. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-05-29; Reg. 1990-06-19; TX0002843529 Here's the X-Men #266 info: v. 1, no. 266, late Aug90. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-06-19; Reg. 1990-08-27; TX0002882810 The Days of Future Present was, therefore, a weekly story (which I remember), and came out during the month of May. X-Men #266, however, didn't come out until the third week of JUNE, several weeks AFTER DOFP had already been out. I wish my 18 year old self was paying attention; I would have kept meticulous records. In any event, at this point X-Men was bi-weekly, and several issues came out after DOFP: v. 1, no. 263, early Jun90. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-05-01; Reg. 1990-06-19; TX0002872984 v. 1, no. 264, late Jul90. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-05-15; Reg. 1990-06-19; TX0002793635 v. 1, no. 265, early Aug90. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-06-05; Reg. 1990-08-27; TX0002882811 v. 1, no. 266, late Aug90. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-06-19; Reg. 1990-08-27; TX0002882810 v. 1, no. 267, early Sep90. Created 1990; Pub. 1990-07-03; Reg. 1990-12-20; TX0002965689 I think this fairly solidly puts a dagger into the idea that "X-Men Annual #14 was mistakenly published early." Not only did it pre-date #266, it also pre-dated #265 as well.
  6. Wanna know something funny...? I scrolled past that exact book just a while ago... I'm so dumb.
  7. Only for individuals. A team doesn't exist until it's officially formed. You still exist even if I don't know your name. Or does he....?
  8. It's only adversarial/accusatory if you're defensive by nature. People ask me for proof and/or evidence of the things I say all the time, and I don't look at it as being (necessarily) adversarial/accusatory, without further contextual evidence.
  9. UXM Annual 14 is one of the few that I will fight against. It was released by the distributors as an accident too early, and the story in Annual 14 even takes place after UXM 266. I think the market got that one right, IOW. But, that's my opinion. Do you have any proof of the "released by the distributors as an accident"? I'm not suggesting it's not true, but you are the only one I have heard this from, and I bought all of these books brand new (DOFP, included.) None I can prove to others, but I was managing a newsstand at the time and I heard from my higher-ups in the company that UXM Annual 14 was released two weeks too early and if we wanted, we could pull them from the shelves. -slym I've never heard of such a thing. That would require a breakdown in the Marvel circulation and editorial process of significant proportions. Books can be LATE all the time...but early..? It would require a misstep in a process which involves multiple people and offices.
  10. And...stories can take place after other stories, but come out before them.

  12. Should I regard all of your posts in that light, too? Have we become so cynical that we must assume that everybody always has an agenda, all the time? Yes Yes. i have an agenda too, creating a universally accepted definition of first appearance. There already is one. First appearance: the first time a character appears in a comic book story. appears in a publication Done. Fixed it for ya (thumbs u And what is a "publication"...?

  14. If Gambit had been on the cover, even in the background, it would be no question. But he's definitely there, in the story, multiple panels.
  15. (don't forget my answer to #5: Invincible #60 Variant, if you missed it)
  16. What other Hulk #294 is there...? Seriously, though, that Thanos Quest #1 is wrong. It's really not Ron Lim, honest. I wonder who got it wrong, where, and who has it now...
  17. I hope no one does. I need archives. Hey! If you're actively hoping people don't guess, that kinda defeats the purpose. Answer versus Guess. What do people say when they get in fights around here? "Please don't take me out of context...blah..blah...and insert your own reality...blah..blah...posting here when you were in diapers...blah blah...just put me on ignore if you ...blahgetty blah"...and then finish with... Other than in a meta way, I have no idea what you're trying to say, here. That frequently happens when you post.

  20. That's why I had a problem with Chew #1... it's Larry's dumb old sketch version. Now it's correct.
