Showcase 22 is a rare book in "OW-W".  I have a feeling the buyer of this copy knows EXACTLY what he is buying.  FYI - Try finding a WHITE PAGER for this book ;)

Hey all...thought I'd catch up with my post and offer some thoughts.  Been busy with work which is a good thing (actually busier than pre-shutdown because now everyone thinks take that 1-4 hour daily commute you're not doing anymore just convert it back into work/production...I'm an architect) and "off" the boards since early April.  So seems like there is still quite a bit of optimism and positive sales/activity and perhaps, as I read the posts at least, apparently still a seller's market for the most part.

However, I personally am waiting for the other shoe to drop (and believe me I am the ETERNAL OPTIMIST!) with 40M people unemployed in USA etc.  And I can't believe the resilience of the stock market but people have to put their money somewhere I guess.  Think about it.  There are approximately 156M people in the workforce in the USA so 40M/+ unemployed is 25%.  That's a lot!  This is tip of the iceberg type thing as it is early and will only worsen until said 40M people get re-employed and back on their feet etc.  As is the cycle, the rich will get richer and take advantage of those with less resources.

For me personally, I turned 65 last NYE, things change.  I still love comics and love my comics but just about no one else in my life could care less.  So I love other things as well and right now my "collectible" focus is on wine.  Wine is fun and more people that I know like wine and I can enjoy that myself and enjoy with others.  Wine is also expensive, like the comics (higher grade) I like, so in that sense I have to navigate and manage my obsession and collect accordingly...and also get the same thrill when I get a deal.  (There aren't a lot of deals to be had in the wine collecting world...it's just about acquiring them and having them pretty much at market for whenever they are available to attain.)  Frankly, comics just don't mean that much to me as they did 5 or 10 years ago.  It may happen to you at some point in your collecting arc.  Don't get me wrong I'm not ditching my ASM 1-20 in CGC 9.0 anytime soon.  And I still do enjoy having them...that is the most intrinsic aspect.  But that will change again some time and I'll sell them all and give the money to my grandkids or something.  The cycle of collecting and life...

I've sold some of my lessor books recently, and they have all gone to booze / wine.  In other words, I drank all my comics during pandemic :)

Its interesting when people think they have studied economics, but they don't realize the value of collectibles arent affected by the downturn in a market the same way stocks are...buy what you love, you only live once, just don't spend beyond your means

I think during a downturn, everyone looks for value.  It can be comics, gold, real estate, stocks, magic cards, you name it!!  Heck, have you seen the value of sports cards lately???  Tons of cards have gone 10x in value!

I'll agree with your last statement: "just don't spend beyond your means" ..... AMEN!

Why wouldn't you just sell the book then?

That's the way I look at it (and convince my significant other) your buying money...something you enjoy that is actually worth something in resale, unlike a car which devalues 30% as soon as it is driven off the lot, same with computer technology as it is always evolving.

Comic books are not money. You lose taxes, shipping, etc if you have to resell immediately.

Money is safe. Comic books (all collectibles) aren't.

    To answer @Hollywood1892 , I like @theCapraAegagrus 's answer.

You make the assumption that the value of comics never drop, and the method of transaction is fee-less / tax-less.  Whenever someone like me buys from HA, CL, or even eBay, I am subject to taxes or customs.  And don't forget about the ridiculous shipping prices I will have to endure.

A $1000 comic that I buy off HA, might end up costing me $1200-$1300 after it is all said and done.  GPA will record it as a $1000 sale.  You really think I can sell my $1000 for $1300 the next month if I lose my job?  Now lets expand that dollar amount to $10K or $100K books.  Sorry, I don't want to play that game.  I am also very adverse to risk.

Having said that, before I make any comic purchase, I basically tell myself, if I can only get 50% of the value I paid, do I still want to purchase?  If the answer is yes, then I will make the purchase :) To enjoy owning something I love!

Additionally, if I see a nice book I have been looking for, and I really want it....  I'm still making purchases right now.  I'm just more careful with my money these days.

To be honest, I have cash and I like nice things, but I don't feel comfortable buying comics just now.

So, I'm really surprised at how well overall sales are doing. I think it's good that the economy is resilient but I keep thinking there is a reckoning that's going to happen sometime in the near future.

For some reason, I have the same thought.  To some degree, I'm just nervous I'll lose my job the next day after I make a big purchase.
