That is an awesome book and having a Pedigree to boot is priceless.  The term grail is thrown around a lot on these boards, but this is truly a grail.

Thanks for the compliments, gents, on both the More Fun 52 and the thumb!  Much appreciated!

Why would the big players go out of business?

Perhaps because globally, there's a lost quarter of economic activity?  Or, an entity is unable to pay its debts as they mature.  This happens when an entity's liabilities exceed its assets.  As you can probably tell, my financial savvy has reached legendary status that transcends even these Boards.

and we have a bear market... the actual leadership is still AWOL.

Unfortunately, this is just the beginning.

In Italy, they've closed bars, restaurants and most shops, except for supermarkets and pharmacies.  Besides personally losing a fortune over the past few weeks, my company's stock is at a 52-week low, and heading lower by the day.  In fact, all companies will significantly miss earnings for the foreseeable future, and those lucky enough to get a bonus, can expect a crappy one at best.  The cruise industry, airlines, hospitality industry -- many of the big players will be going out of business.  Not to mention tax season is right around the corner for those that don't withhold.  As recommended by the great Mohamed El-Erian, individual investors should "resist our inclination to buy the dip".

On the comic front, dealers can't move inventory, because they've cancelled most cons, and customers aren't risking their health to visit their local comic book shops (or to even physically go to work anymore, for that matter).

Every time there's a dead-cat bounce in the market, the next day it falls twice as much.  Stay on the sidelines, kids.  Don't catch a falling knife....

  4. The market's collapsing for the same reason as the subprime crisis:  too much borrowed money fueled a bubble, and now it's unwinding.  People buying comics on credit cards, layaway plans, etc. -- everyone's a dealer -- all thinking they could flip the books anytime for more than they paid.  That only works in a rising market.  Once the comic prices stopped rising, the speculators and fast money shifted into video games, further depressing the comic prices.

And the remaining buyers only want to cherry pick the cream of the crop - good page quality, no chipping, no writing, etc. It's simply not enough to just own a coveted key anymore (with the exception of certain grails, like Tec 27 and Action 1), the book has to be nearly perfect.  This is due to some OCD fool that started nit picking wrap centering, page quality, chipping and other previously irrelevant attributes.  That terrible trend caught on like fire, and now all the remaining buyers only want the best.  Collectors like me, that used to be happy just owning a book, are now forced to seek out the best, not because we're looking to sell or really care that there's a chip in a book, but because if you ever want/need to sell it, only the perfect copies sell for full value.  For example, look at all the orphaned copies of AF15 on eBay that will never catch a bid.  Some are beautiful, but because their page quality is cream or they have chipping, they are pariah.

    Not a good combination.

Ah man, that sucks. I was hoping for you. There is a 8.5 graded copy on ebay now. But I didn't think the book could fit in that type of holder its in.

That's a nice copy.  I'm also surprised that it fits in a regular holder.  Must be perfectly wrapped, otherwise it would definitely be slabbed in a magazine-sized holder!

Looking at the gorgeous Cerebus # 1 that FattyDaddyComics purchased on eBay, I am inclined to think that it is real without seeing the inside front cover tell because of the signature. Raw specimens in this condition are like unicorns because of Sim holding back the best copies that he eventually sent to CGC. Sim's go-to inscription has always been "Best Wishes" and the signature on the comic in question looks correct for the era. When I met him at The Last Signing, I brought a Spawn # 10 with me to see how he would react. He made a big stink about it and called me out in front of the other people waiting in line. It was quite funny and I got the reaction I wanted. He personalized it for me, included a sketch and inscribed "Best Wishes" with the signature. He had been signing for four to five hours by this point and the signature is not as crisp as it would be if he wasn't so tired. However, the "Best Wishes" is consistent with other specimens I have seen, including the Cerebus # 1 that FattyDaddyComics recently purchased. Here is a picture of the Spawn # 10 in question with the postcard that Strange Adventures handed out at the event, which I kept in my files for the sake of provenance.

Thanks for the compliment on, and show of support for, my Cerebus #1 being the real deal!  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I will share the CGC results with this group once the comic gets graded!  Stay tuned.

Well, big congrats on picking up a beautiful copy at an absolutely amazingly low price.  :applause:

Thanks!  Along with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, it was THE GRAIL to own when I was a kid in the 80's and impossible to find (pre-Internet days).  I'm delighted to finally own a copy -- especially one that is not so shabby!  I'll share the results once CGC grades it!

Any opinions on this copy that is up for sale on ebay?

It seems to pass most of the check points and is signed by Sim in his actual name (assuming that wasn't forged). My problem with it is that my go to check point has always been the "handle" of the sword in Cerebus hand and the outline on the shield. The original version has the black ink bleeding badly to the point it fills in noticeably. This one doesn't have the bleed. Other than that it appears to check out.

I disagree. If you look, this bidder is just bidding on this seller only. No other sellers, and bidding on 11 of the sellers books. Looks like a shill bids to me.

Yes, but as I said. There is a good chance they do not bid on a lot of items on eBay. There have been board members that have agreed that this is how their results may look as well because they are not active on eBay unless something special comes up.

Edit: Ah, I see you said they are bidding on multiples auctions of the one seller. I would agree as well then, thanks.

It's absolutely real.  I bought it.  Irrespective of any shill bidding, opportunities to buy this book in this condition are rare, and luck favors the prepared.
