Anyone else heading over to Orlando for OAX on January 26-28th? Bringing pages to trade?  Post them here, along with what you may be looking for.

I'll be there and will be bringing several pages for potential trades (or sales).  If anyone is interested, here is the link to what I'll have on my CAF gallery:

I'll also be bringing a complete issue of TMNT New Animated Adventures:

    Looking for X-Men art.

If you happen to have an extra Silvestri Uncanny X-Men page laying around, feel free to look through my entire CAF gallery and let's talk!

I recently had a user reach out via CAF, trying to sell some Tom Morgan Fleer card art for a nice markup. Funny thing is, I don’t think he owned the art (yet). A number of them were featured on Clan McDonald’s live art sale for considerably cheaper the following week (but still pricey for modern card art). This is at least questionable behavior right?

Ooooooo- who was it??? (I checked those out on clan- they were nice but over priced for modern)

@skypinkblu Your OA with the “PWS” signature - could that be Paul Smith?

@Unstoppablejayd might know — Jay, see Sha’s post top of this page: con sketches of Miss America and Spidey and Tweety. Could that be Paul Smith the X-Men guy?

Hi guys! Hope the Hollidays treated both of you well!

Don’t know who they are but not Paul Smith. Paul Smith signs PMS and his sig looks different. Sorry

Nice choices overall. I dig them all. And it's a fun thing, that doesn't cost a ton, with some nice history behind it.

I like this one the best, probably because I know where the original is.... lol

    oooo which one?

In 2023, I knocked off eight items (wow!) from my hitlist, a Powerpoint file I compiled in 2020 with screenshots and sales/tracking info containing all the OA I would ever want. It's essentially a working model for how I research and rank art from a targeted book, artist or character, in the hopes of building out a curated collection after years of flailing about rudderless. The selling process over the last three years has brought my collection down to only a couple portfolios and frames.

Finding the whereabouts of anything from that list is an accomplishment in and of itself; securing it from there is even harder (and typically expensive). But the benefits of a sharpshooter approach means my spending is no longer scattered. In 2024, the goal will be to continue to network within the community, track down some of these elusive hitlist pieces and continue a disciplined acquisition strategy.  Fingers crossed!

Perhaps Jay you could persuade Bill to actually comment on OAX here. He may not like this board, but it does represent a space which has built-in growth potential via the larger comics collecting community here. Concentrating on just CAF and the OA FB pages is fine, but it doesn't "grow" the hobby the way or expose it to new people the way this site can... I wonder how many pure comics collectors who have never thought about OA would be interested in OAX, if he chose to market it to them from the POV of meeting all these artists.

Good idea.. I’ll mention it to him when I speak to him

I'm sure it would have been different if I had shown the art before owing him money already. And I didn't pay cash because I didn't want to. I am continously monitoring auctions and sale prices for art so I think I have a good grasp on what a piece is worth.

Ok- I’m just saying that saying someone took advantage of you is a negative saying. Like they ripped you off. But as we all know pricing art is subjective so if you didn’t like the evaluation you had other options. Rather than saying you were taken advantage of .

I've done a couple of trades with Mike Burkey and overall I was satisfied with the results on both ocassions. I did 1 deal with Anthony in order to pay for a DD win and wasn't really happy with that deal. Since I already owed Anthony I think he might have taken advantage of that when pricing the art I gave him in exchange but it is what it is.

Interesting- you say he “took advantage” - how do you mean?

if you didn’t like his evaluation why didn’t you just pay cash for your commitment then?

Keep this in mind: Dealers say it's easier to sell one big piece than it is to sell several lower-priced pieces. That's been told to me several times over the 25 years I've been collecting and, although art I've tried to trade up for has sat for many years on some dealers' sites while my smaller pages sold almost immediately upon me putting them up for sale, that's generally the rule they go by.

Here's another tip: Dealers don't often like to trade one, big piece of Marvel art for a bunch of DC art. I know there are those who don't believe Marvel art sells better and higher than DC art, but it sure does.

When making a trade with a dealer, you also have to give a little extra, because, unless your piece is a Todd McFarlane ASM cover and you're offering to trade it for a Murphy Anderson Mystery in Space cover of equal value (is that even possible? Nah, I'm just saying, is all) a straight-up trade rarely works. They're not in this to trade piece for piece and dollar for dollar. So, think about what the incentive to trade with you would be for a dealer and go at it from that angle.

Nowadays, dealers aren't easy to trade with. Back in the good old days of the late-1990s and early-2000s, dealers were a lot more fun to deal with and they were often open to trades. Now, not so much.

Trades can be a lot of fun. I get the itch once or twice a year to try to make a trade, and have made many trades in the past, but I don't think I've made one at all this year.

    You haven’t????

This was my experience in the May show. Tire kickers who turn to ghosts. CAL is never held during a convenient weekend for me and so I have to remove myself from the people I’m with to type out a long answer regarding the condition of the piece or whatever. Then zilch. A simple “I’ll pass, thank you” would suffice. No foul. I had a known figure in the hobby inquire about a piece but didn’t want to pay my asking price. Went back and forth a bit but someone was willing to pay the full price. And when I let this person know, I could feel the eye roll in the response. Okay, I’ll make note of that for the future.

I agree.. people need to learn to close the loop. Saying no thanks is ok… just as long as you respond lol.

  12. Another great show! Yes some prices where very high… yes some art we have scene before.. I have no problem with either of those things because stuff I thought was over priced sold, good for the seller and buyer!, and pieces I’ve seen before sold, good for the buyer and seller! People’s tastes and cash flow change!

for me I bought a great piece from one of my favorite stories ( thanks @Brian Peck) I finished up a cash trade deal that has started and stopped for a while ,sold two other pieces (one I have offered before) to help fund the page I bought! Also got to host a panel with one of my favorite modern artists. So overall a great event as usual ( thank you @Bill Cox) !

The dealer most definitely did not do that, I know this 100%.  I'll admit its sour grapes but still not for the reason that most are assuming, I don't think.  There's some in the hobby that I've seen, and I figure others do too, that will go around and pick up pieces from regular dealers like who I've dealt with, and also canvas the groups and forums, standard early preview drop emails, buying up as many examples of an artist as possible, soaking up the supply, then put them back out there for multiple times the purchase price and likely actual market value.  My concern wasn't about my dealer at all...but rather another one of the types I described, which I think really throw a wrench in the organic growth of the hobby. I think that was my shock in such a massive price jump when I haven't seen any other examples in the market.  Look, if I sold too early and someone else benefits from an organic market jump, so be it.  I sold my low grade copy of Avengers #1 around the same time at market value.  Now that book is worth at least double.  You can chart it's organic increase over time.

In a hobby that does have a lot of upward movement, a lot of new interest lately, its a small group of folks doing what I mentioned above. I don't believe at all that there were any shenanigans going on on the part of my dealer, and I also know Panel Page is up and up. My shock was over such a drastic increase and a gut reaction figuring it was the type of person I described above.  I guess seeing what happens to other Robertson Marvel work, or pages from this run, will tell in time.

I don't think I have a right to know who bought my artwork though...seems like a client/business privacy thing...even though I'd be torn if I knew it was one of the type of individuals I mentioned, buying up a supply then pumping a price.  I think that was my gut reaction about going through dealers...but in retrospect there's no way to balance that.  They have a bigger reach, but then again you don't know who is purchasing things.  Their position is neutral intermediary as it has to be. That's the only logical tradeoff.  I hope all that made sense.

Don’t discount the possibility that the dealer just bought it at your asking price stuck it in a folio for a few months and then put it out at a higher price. Wolverine covers aren’t cheap and you don’t see many for 2k no matter the artist
