  1. Yeah, if you can press an extra .2 out of a book and flip it, your money machine is working -- for now. The small sampling of data I provided shows a downward trend for a book that can not get a .2 bump after it has been pressed and flipped.
  2. I collect GA comics because I like to read them. I'm a collector, not a dealer. OK, end of disclaimer. My opinion of the SA market is that the rush to market of all the pressed 9.8 copies is a tell that the market is peaking at a Ponce like parabolical rate. According to Pedigree Comics’ President and CEO, Doug Schmell: “The (July Grand) auction was a phenomenal success" -- http://comics.gpanalysis.com/gpaforcomics_newsfeed_article.asp?id=3958 Oh really?? Comparing a few of the items auctioned, If Pedigree couldn't press an extra .2 out of the comic, he lost money (one exception noted). The HAWKMAN Mythos

The HAWKMAN Mythos ?A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.? -- Joseph Campbell. The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Although Gardner Fox created the Hawkman ten years before Joseph Campbell?s book was released, of all the super-hero characters of the Golden Age of Comics, the Hawkman is perhaps the best representation of Joseph Campbell?s hero. Within this journal, I would like to share my Flash Comics reading experience and try to better understand the Hawkman mythos. Flash Comics #1: I can?t help but think that the character of Carter Hall must have been self-reflective. With war in Europe started in the autumn of 1939, he must have wrestled with a sense of helplessness in a world that is on a destructive course. A collector of exotic curios of the ancient world, frequent guest at socialite galas, he is ready to embark on a hero?s journey that will change his life forever. I particularly like how Gardner Fox handles the mythological aspects of the story of the Hawkman origin. Making an Egyptian god blonde is right. The blending of different gods and goddesses further creates an American folk hero. The ninth metal! Quarterstaff, wings, hood, crossbow; we are introduced to one of the Hawkman?s famous traits, the use of weapons of war. Death Count = 1
  7. tier 2...books that I love to collect, but that are priced for . . . . keeping (in the collection). I think that is an accurate statement for the majority of the books being posted in the "Forum Only Selling Area". Fishing expedition. My track record on finding a comic book for sale in the selling area that I think is a good value and I bite is 1 per year (2009-10 -- made the quota).

  9. opps . . . this GA lurker made his very first BRONZE post
  10. Got lucky at a recent antique show . . .
  11. The dcbs.com store is 1 mile from my house. I go in there about 2 times a month. After spending nearly an hour browsing everything in the store, I'm always swayed by the GA stories.
  12. Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune: The Complete Sunday Newspaper Strips Vol. 1 (1933-1935) I just picked up Roy Cranes "Captain Easy" yesterday at dcbs.com. Predating the DC line of adventure stories by four years, it is fascinating to see how the genre evolved. http://www.fantagraphics.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=1716&category_id=628&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=62
  13. Gardner Fox deserves more than an honorable mention in that list.
  14. Back in February I was watching the Philip Wiess auction of Eldon Dedini Detective Comics with great interest. It is a fair assumption that Heritage bought #1 and #2. PW price: #1 $28250 #2 $19210 HA: Let's assume a private collector purchased the DC#2 on-line or via telephone at the PW auction for $19210. I don't know how the HA auction price of $26290 gets reduced down to a net check to the seller of the PW item. Using 20% as a guide, that comes to $21032. That's a lot of risk put on the table for a very marginal return. Then again, assuming HA purchased the Dedini collection, they made a nice 30% return in a few months time in a tight market. August Signature Auction: HA also has the Action Comics #19 from the collection being offered in the August Auction.
  15. With apologies to the memory of Mr. Flessel . . . .
  16. I just read the Hawkman Archive Edition story form this issue yesterday. Excellent! It was also noted in the Foreword that it wasn't until about #9 that reader mail came in requesting that the cover art be related to the stories inside.

  18. Before the scourge of the nazi fifth column, or nips . . . the hob-goblin came in the form of chinamen. I've always thought of the cover of DC#1 as a veiled reference to the first story. When the sick were thrown overboard and mysteriously washing up to shore; Speed Saunders uncovering a chinamen slave trade on board one of the ships.
