  1. Gotta lay off those ravishes. They make me belch But nice resto job. I've removed tape from covers and inside spines (I have access to a wide range of solvents and a reasonably steady hand) but never on anything worth more than a few bucks. It look like the adhesive stains weren't too bad in this case. Wonderful, historic book to own! Jack
  2. An elegant turn of the phrase. I'll have to look for an excuse to use it! Glad to see my favorite thread back in business. Well done. I'm also curious how close you are to the full month's set. Jack
  3. Depending on price, I would have bought it too. You can probably flip to to 'Bones for a profit! Jack
  4. He's the kind of clown that gives kids nightmares. He looks like his neck is broken. Jack
  5. Make sure to go for the ones that say "collectors' item" on the cover! That's about one a month, right? Jack "Dis issue -- Da wabbit dies! Not a hoax! Not an imaginawy stowy!"
  6. Many, many years ago. About due for a re-read. When you reread it, you can think about why they're in costume. Jack
  7. I've never really looked at that cover before. Very unusual color gradient in the background -- oddly, the "hot" yellow is deeper and "cool" blue-green is shallower, certainly not what my eye would expect. The "ruffled feathers" around the band of Donald's hat are unusual too. On almost any other Donald cover, the black/white line is smooth. Keep 'em coming! Jack
  8. "it's only 1-10"... sheesh. I'll show you a run that deserves the word "only!! Fantastic, and with the majority unslabbed, you can see what's inside! Jack
  9. That is a strange one. I knew there was a thread like this somewhere but couldn't find it when I posted this one over in Silver. I suppose there's an innocent interpretation of what's going on here beside Juggy sniffing glue -- he's just taking a nap? What the heck is he doing daydreaming about Archie instead of all those cute girlies in Riverdale? I think his eyelids and the look on his face tell the story. Jack
  10. And despite the fact that they're retired they still walk around in costume? You've read Watchmen, right? Jack
  11. WTF???? Only strenghtens my theory that DC had some substance abusing beatniks writing for them in the 50's. Oh yeah, now I HAVE to find a copy of that It is a classic -- always makes me think of Ghostbusters. Jack
  12. Where's Pinhead?? Semi-seriously, that's him on the right, isn't it? This series and "Pinhead and Foodini" always strike me as one of the most oddball comics ever. From the get-go, the idea of a comic book about puppets makes so little sense. It's like watching a magic show on TV -- it's TV, man, they decide what you see! And this comes from someone who owns and has indexed some Howdy Doody comics and would like to get the Beany and Cecil books (although those were clearly based on the cartoon, not the puppets). Somehow the name Foodini and the ultra-low-tech photos on the cover just scream "oddball" at me. Do copies of the old TV series still exist, or have they been lost over time? I've never seen one. Foodini can have the whole back seat on the Short Bus, as far as I'm concerned. Good choice. Jack
  13. What kind of world do we live in that these smokin' Blondies would be relegated to the short bus? These can ride on my long bus any day. If I had a long bus. They can ride in my truck. "Don't touch that dial!" (showing my age) They are pretty cool. The characters seem off-model on some of the covers, esp. #18. Did Chic Young draw them or farm them out? The newspaper strip should probably be put out of its misery. Tired. Jack no bus of any length
  14. Allright, I'll post it again. Came in earlier this month. A damn sight nicer than the #7 I posted. Looks like one o' them March 1952 books. Jack
  15. Jim Davis was a very talented cartoonist. Apparently he drew The Hound and the Hare stories too. Nice style there too, even more "open" than Fox and Crow -- more like Sheldon Mayer in places. Me neither, or I wouldn't have bought it. I doubt that single-digit issues are very easy to come by. Maybe impossible in high grade (I wouldn't know). Jack
  16. Not much action on the Short Bus lately. As humbly posted on "this week": The Fox and the Crow 7 A VERY well-loved copy. Nothing to get excited about, but it is a complete, readable copy of a 1952-53 DC book with decent page quality. I can't complain about a Gerber 6 (whatever that really means) for a mere $12. Watch for my index to appear soon on GCD! Jack
  17. Hey, I've got a lot more reason to be humble than you do! The Fox and the Crow 7 A VERY well-loved copy. Nothing to get excited about, but it is a complete, readable copy of a 1952-53 DC book with decent page quality. I can't complain about a Gerber 6 (whatever that really means) for a mere $12. Watch for my index to appear soon on GCD! Jack what time does the Short Bus come by this stop?
  18. I hope you guys don't mind seeing a little more Guardineer. I know I saw some early Burgos also somewhere but can't find it right now - The bottom tier with the sunburst background continued across 2 panels is outstanding! Techniques like that were called novel and pioneering in the Silver Age! Plus ça change... Jack
  19. Mister Hands/ Thing (Addams) prototype! Interesting. What were the writers swiping here -- The Beast With Five Fingers? There are many movies with animated, amputated hands but that one has the right timing. What a crazy panel with the hands on the ceiling! (I can just picture a pair of Dragnet-type deadpan investigators looking over the crime scene. "It looks like another one, Ben." "Another what, Joe?" "Another hand job.") Jack
  20. Nice stuff Yackety-freakin'-yak! The dialogue almost pushed the Gustavson artwork off the page! Jack
  21. Look at the Arrow's double-jointed knee! Jack ouch
  22. If those weren't Everett covers you'd get a for posting in the Timely thread. The Blondie's have no excuse Load them on the Short Bus! Jack
  23. Not Golden Age, but do you have the later Funny Stuff digests? The Best of DC 37, 43, 49, 55 (others)? Usually not very expensive but hard to find because of low demand. I bet they're a bear if you care about high grade. I've got some of them (somewhere) picked up in lot purchases. Jack
  24. Thanks! Did you Photoshop undistort Bill's scan? Similar stray marks. Fantastic. That looks more like a different scan. Nice page that reminds me of some of Kelly's giants on Fairy Tale Parade. This is great. I just ask for something and it appears. Does it work on anything besides comic book scans? Thanks, Jack
  25. ALL my experiments are truly fiendish. I'm surprised that you even noticed the uranium note next to that flowered sarong! You have to store your uranium somewhere! What the heck is that stiff blonde woman wearing? A giant flour sack? Great stuff, Scrooge! Keep 'em flyin'! Thanks, Jack
