  1. I'm very patient -- I've accumulated well over 300 mostly that way, but it's slow going. Often ebay sellers don't mention Four Color (naturally, since it doesn't say that anywhere on most of them) so you've got to get lucky and find them by title. I'll never find Series 1, the first 25 or so of Series 2 or most of the early ducks that way, but it's a fun search anyway. I'm enjoying your cover display. Jack
  2. WOW! Great spread and scan. Is that your own copy? I wonder whether a collection of Kelly's non-Pogo material would sell enough to pay the bills. I'd buy it. What I've seen of his Gremlins strip for Dell/Disney is great. Thanks, Jack
  3. Cool sulfur page by Kiefer! I wonder whether a flat scan of this page exists -- obvously you wouldn't want to destroy the spine of yours by leaning on it. It does look a lot like a Famous Scientists feature in Classics Illustrated. I just had to repeat the Kelly page. Wonderful. Has anyone ever seen a flat scan of this spread? You got me jealous with that one. I'll gladly send you the dime -- plus shipping! Jack
  4. What was "Adventure Bound"? Was it original to comic books or did it come from some other source? Honestly, I have no idea. I was just using it as an example of the amazing, often obscure, Four Color books in primo condition that have been parading through this thread. My hat is off to bullet123. My personal grails are the Walt Kelly books. Personally, I'd love to have a run of FC reader copies that I could actually look at and smack on the scanner whenever the spirit moved me, but the high-grade copies here are astonishing to see. Jack
  5. YOW! Your posts are knocking me out. I know I'll never have a copy of Adventure Bound like that because there may not be another copy of Adventure Bound like that. Dells are the neglected stepchildren of the comic-book industry, although they outsold most of today's favored sons. Wonderful stuff. Keep on posting them! Jack "inky dinky parlay foo" HAW!!
  6. At the risk of being a contrarian, I'd say their scan is easily within the range of using the automatic "adjust levels" function, which I do all the time. It ain't easy to match the appearance of a comic in front on you to the appearance on a monitor because there are so many steps to the translation that depend on the monitor, settings, etc. That's not what you wanted to read, is it? Jack
  7. Y'know, given that I'm more a GA/SA kind of guy, it's surprising how much I enjoy reading the Marvel Graphic Novels series. I don't give a @#$%^& what printing they are though. Jack
  8. "Flaunt your Dodo shamelessly!" I always say. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Jack
  9. First appearance of Jack Selegue!! HAW! Bite your tongue. I would have been wearing safety goggles! But I am glad to see a TRUE gas that's not a vaporized liquid. Jack (huh?)
  10. Keen Detective 21 is hardly run-of-the-mill! And it sure is an element bonanza! Any idea who wrote all these element-containing stories? But I'm baffled. The river of molten metal is supposed to be magnesium melted by the focused arc light -- and it didn't ignite?? Bizarre. Thanks, Jack
  11. I guess you wouldn't mind a few more then? First, here's how I imagine a typical Jack weekend starts - AWP!! OK, where'd you hid the mini-cam? Usually even Thorer on Thunday morning. Wow. Great stuff. Thanks again. Jack
  12. Don't hand us that "wood cut"-ish rationale. You know darn well it's because you've got a crush on foxy Natalie in that open, flowered shirt! Jack (I don't, of course)
  13. Serious question? All Original Comics? Jack Winner!! Yup, just inside the front cover is a long text piece about All Original Comics and how that's what's on everyone's minds these days (i.e., in the mid-1930's). I'll watch my mail for a large no-parcel. Jack
  14. Yeah, the turn of the phrase sounded odd to me as well. Not much sense in it but then again ... the "new" radium is by next page used to transform one of the peon into a claw-dwarf Hmm -- yeah, must not be regular radium. I can never get it do do that darn claw-dwarf transformation. I try, I try, but they just won't learn it. These kids nowadays... The semester barely started! We're still at the basics like suction cups that you can use to effortlessly climb brick office buildings, eyeglasses that totally change your appearance so that daily co-workers don't recognize you, that sort of thing. Thanks, Jack makes lots of unstable molecules
  15. You sure are good at finding these! "Another radium element" -- odd phrase. I wonder whether the writer meant "another radioactive element". Any clues in the rest of the story? Flame #4 -- I don't think I could count of finding that in a dollar bin. -- lots earlier than March 1952, isn't it? Thanks! Jack brilliant[?] scientist and enemy of mankind!
  16. So Brave & Bold #28 is actually a swipe. Good eye! I never noticed that before. It's funny how Aquaman sort of has the Wilma position, although Wonder Woman's posture is more like Wilma's. I wonder whether this was a conscious swipe by Sekowsky. Jack
  17. Purple/magenta cape on Krypto? Did the scanner do that? Jack
  18. Apparently the DC Indeex site doesn't allow external links. The URLs show in the quote if you strip off the tags. You need to go all the way back to Gallery level and rerun the search to see the cover. Same problem I had over at the Four Color thread. Jack
  19. Apparently he knew a model who thought it was funny to be chased by a giant carnival monster! Seriously, there's info about him at Jerry Bails' Who's Who: John Chilly CHILLY, JOHN Name and vital stats CHILLY, JOHN [1921- ] (artist; writer) Education New York University Parson's School of Design Influences Alex Raymond; Roy Crane; Milt Caniff Print Media (non-comics) Art Director: 1968-69 Motion Picture Magazine > 68 69 Art Director: 1973-74 Belmont / Tower Paperback Division > 73 74 Artist: Paperbacks: Chemistry; Science Made Easy; Dell Paperbacks Artist: Penciler on 2-min. 20. The red-skirted Supergirl! Didn't a colorist make this mistake on another cover or story or two? Unless it's one of those clues that the reader is supposed to pick up to realize that it's a fake Supergirl. Jack (there could have been a whole Earth-R built around it!)
  21. "I want a body so I can LIVE again!" HAW! I think most of us are nodding in agreement at his choice of body. Wonderful oddball book! GCD says Kinstler, Orlando and Goldfarb on interiors. Do you think that Kinstler did the young lady and someone else the rest of the cover? Very Munch-like zombies. Jack
  22. Where's Hawkgirl's headgear? Is that part of the storyline? Jack
  23. Forty years later it would have been "The Monster that Fished for Men.... Not that There's Anything Wrong With That!" Girlfriend seems only mildly surprised. Jack
  24. Recent arrival at GCD. A mutant dog whacking a puppet on the head with a giant red hammer crudely attached to his tail = short bus fare ticket. Unusual border effect that came and went through the run. I don't own it, but I'd like to. Jack
