  1. You know, now that I see YOUR scans, those raccoons look awfully cute, send them back... The prices went WAY up due to recent high demand. You could say that the demand doubled, in fact. Maybe tripled if shiverbones stops by. Jack Yeah, yeah...you CHARMED those away from me and now you.... ...have to store them and I don't. I could use a shot or two. Sayonara, Jack

  3. A couple of readers from the late Golden Age, Animal Antics 21 and 22 -- received yesterday from Sharon (skypinkblu) with her high-pressure sales tactics! When the top-billed characters are the almost-forgotten Raccoon Kids, you know you're on the Short Bus! Nip and Chip by Otto Feuer was the pleasant surprise in 21. Chip (a chipmunk) tricks Nip (a parrot, I think) out of his higgleberries by telling Nip that he has higgleberry fever. Odd. The most interesting story in 22 was probably Nip and Chip again. Nip falls in love with Hildegarde, a hippopotamus (!) and Chip plays Cupid for him. Literally, with wings, bow and arrow and all. There's also sort of a Fractured Fairy Tale by Ed Dunn (I know nothing about him), slanted versions of Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood as told by Willy Wolf to his son. Even though the stories are mostly fair to middling, the cartooning is sharp. According to GCD, the books are all by Otto Feuer, Rube Grossman and Ed Dunn, except for the puzzles. Jack
  4. I am so jealous. Great looking book. Someone is jealous of one of my funnybooks? Thanks, Jack (You'd probably be shocked at the price including shipping.)
  5. Big pile received today, but not much time to scan. Here's one you don't see every day! Anomaly 4, Nov-72 1st print, VF 8.0 or so, published by Bud Plant, Corben, Kline, Strnad artwork Jack
  6. WOOO-HOOOOO! Kelly is my favorite cartoonist (usually). Great stuff! Which book is this from? Are the pages earlier today from the same one? Thanks for all the page scans. Jack
  7. does it really not say #1 anywhere? never noticed that before. Yes, back in the olden days, publishers thought that #1 on the cover would discourage buyers that preferred a "proven product" (and maybe they were right). For example, Aquaman didn't have #1 on the cover, although the blurb showed that DC thought that someone wanted a first issue. Partially for postal regulation reasons, lots of series didn't start with #1 -- Flash 105, dozens of Marvel/Atlas title changes, etc. Jack
  8. Are we not surprised? OK, let's see the The Quarrymen records and The Beatles – Yesterday and Today butcher cover. Jack
  9. When a problem comes along. You must whip it. Before the cream sits out too long. You must whip it. When something's going wrong. You must whip it. Jack Are we not men? Jack, I can't figure out if you are quoting Devo, or H.G. Wells... Devo. The "House of Pain" is over on General, not Gold. Something about piles of books in church. Jack
  10. Thanks! Dicky's just not the same without his magic decapitating whip, is he? Jack Are any of us, for that matter? When a problem comes along. You must whip it. Before the cream sits out too long. You must whip it. When something's going wrong. You must whip it. Jack Are we not men?
  11. Thanks! Dicky's just not the same without his magic decapitating whip, is he? Jack
  12. Thanks!! I have to agree about the variation in art quality. The pages here, esp. the splash, are nicely drawn. Some of the later Dicky stories (the few that I've seen) seem much more primitive. Jack
  13. Don't forget the important part: Are we going to get to see Dicky? "Whip" him out, BZ! Jack
  14. Nice match. I'd say that it eventually became a standard cover pose. Kirby and the gang used it on a dozen or more pre-hero Atlas/Marvel monster covers. Kirby also used versions on several Fantastic Four covers, especially when he was on auto-pilot later in his run (glance at GCD -- 21, 39, 86, 86). Even Amazing Spider-Man used it occasionally (the beloved Rhino cover of 41 is similar), Giant-Man in Tales to Astonish, etc. Most aren't as close as your match though. Here's a later DC cover that's close. Jack
  15. WOW. That's one supremely strange story. Little boy beheading cows, robots... Thanks, Sharon. WOW is right! Dicky is up there in Fletcher Hanks territory. I wonder whether a book of reprints would sell. I'd like to read the whole run. Thanks! Jack
  16. Do we have a Dickey bibliography? Old Dicky thread "Scrooge, Dicky in the Magic Forest started in Zip 10 (not noted in the Guide)...do you happen to know when the serial ended? According to the Keltner Index, Dicky lasted until issue 26 then disappeared. He and Captain Valor gave the ghost to leave enough room for The Web: 6 pgs from Dickie and 7 pages from Captain Valor gave 13 pages to The Web." There are some Dicky scans there. I don't remember whether that's the thread with a full story or two. Anyone remember? Jack
  17. She was just a beloved side line... I just never wanted anyone to know how depraved I actually was, so I hid it well.. Hid it? When? Jack
  18. HAW! sent as I was editing my message. We're twin sons of different mothers, I tell ya. Jack
  19. Spectacular! That's the kind of friend to have. Jack PS: Some Dicky and the Magic Forest stories in there! If they haven't been posted yet and you dare to scan or photograph them, he has a lot of fans around here.
  20. Ye cats! That is beyond commentability! not quite Jack
  21. Yummmmmm... roast venison! It sure is fun to see some back covers. Any chance of seeing a favorite story or two? Thanks, Jack
  22. Terrific back cover! If shiverbones doesn't already have this one, you've just added a tough entry to his want list. Jack
  23. Hot or not, Superman surely must remember how much of a pain Lana ever was when they were growing up!! In any and all Adventure or Superboy stories, Lana is unsufferable (sp?). I bet Supes will overlook her looks and pass ... HAH! Looks obviously trump insufferable! He married Lois (after she got over her Silver-Age frumpiness), didn't he? Or so I've heard second-hand. Yes, Swan's (here) and Schaffenberger's Lana are both hot. They seemed to enjoy drawing her more than Lois. Jack
