  1. Funny -- a cover homage with a knowing wink and a smile? Jack
  2. What a fetishistic cover! The "hot women in uniform" angle combined with "discover my secret identity", which was usually treated as sexual innuendo in the 50s and 60s. This is nominally edited by Whit Ellsworth, but the de facto Superman editor was Mort Weisinger in 1956, right? Unca Mort loved this stuff. Jack
  3. When I bought my scanner, March 2006, in an initial burst of enthusiasm I scanned around 250 CGC books. Scanning fool that I was, I did them all at 96dpi, a default setting on the scanner. As a result, I am not happy with the quality of them. If you use board hosting, the scans have to be small anyway. 96 dpi should do the job. You write that like it's a BAD thing! Looking forward to seeing more rarely seen books. Jack
  4. Kudos to Sharon's warehouse find! Aw, with those sweet li'l fuzzy antennae? The story that goes with it is staggeringly lame, even by DC anthology standards! (The workman with the plaid shirt is Barney.) Jack
  5. That's a fair request. Everybody stand back and give gator a chance, OK. You have until, say, Christmas eve. One extension if you need it. So, swing into ACTION, gator. This is your ONE chance for big-time glory. Good luck! Jack
  6. WOOOEEEY! Thanks for the celebration. I'm going to have to clear off my desktop to fit the row of trophies. Jack Whiz Comics 51 Congratulations, Jack. That's your 4th win. Hooray I didn't anticipate this quiz being so difficult to solve. I think it ended up being second only to the Popeye cover in time needed for someone to figure it out.
  7. Your "House of" books are blowin' me away, 'bones. ... [PS: Can you actually tell Ely from Brown from Elias from etc. on these DC anthology covers?] Your scans reminded me to post a couple of the nice "House of" books I recently bought from Sharon (that also included HoS 18). Here's 19 and 24 with more bold DC colors. 24 features another one of those code-approved, non-threatening goofy monsters. Kind of like being attacked by Beany's pal, Cecil. Jack
  8. Whiz Comics 51 Apparently everyone's busy this week!! Jack I wasn't busy. I did check the early MLJ titles that have tons of guillotine covers ... to no avail obviously. Congrats. I had no idea! (thumbs u This first pic did look like MLJ artwork, but I didn't have time to look around last night. When I saw the second one this morning, it was more obviously Beck. I got lucky and checked Whiz Comics first. Lots of variety on Captain Marvel covers! Jack
  9. Whiz Comics 51 Apparently everyone's busy this week!! Jack
  10. Your "House of" books are blowin' me away, 'bones. Fun to see yet another "creature from my story" cover, this time a writer instead of artist. I wonder how many times DC used that shtick. Jack [PS: Can you actually tell Ely from Brown from Elias from etc. on these DC anthology covers?]
  11. It's sort of remarkable how Lois went from being sexy and confident (based on Katherine Hepburn?) in the Golden to early Atomic Age, then slipped to (usually) being a frumpy, shrewish idjit for most of the late Atomic Age into the Silver Age, then back to confident and sexy. Was that frumpy period mostly Weisinger's doing? Thanks for posting these great books from an almost forgotten part of DC's history. Jack
  12. Claw (from Gleason's Daredevil) and Mister Mind (Captain Marvel) are worth mentioning. Jack
  13. HHAAWW!!! Morono, King of the Plutonian insufficiently_thoughtful_persons! They really don't write 'em like that no more. Thanks, Jack (...BRAAAAINSS...)
  14. and this is just wonderful! I agree -- the Bat-Signal almost the diameter of the moon is amazing! I suppose since it's only a mile or so from the earth to the moon in the future, it wouldn't be so tough. And Saturn wobbling along only a couple of miles in the other direction -- WOO! 1st appearance of Bullseye -- I mean, Deadshot!?!!? I didn't know that he got his start in the Golden Age! Jack
  15. Looks more like miswrap -- not much roll at all. Not surprising really. It's not like the guys running the presses paid the least bit of attention as the books flew off. Jack
  16. Ebay surprises. Jack Wouldn't you have to bid to win? Yeah -- I bid, I won, and I'm sure not complaining about the prices! Jack
  17. WOOOOFF! Nice cover, especially with that marvelous date December 1952 displayed so prominently. Too delicate to scan Robot Woman after all that build-up? Jack
  18. Probably my first post in this thread. A recent ebay surprise win, Amazing Spider-Man 40, September 1966 in about FN-. Green Goblin cover and origin! It can keep my original owner copy company -- probably a little higher grade too. I don't know what to make of that page overhang on the right edge. I think it's just poorly wrapped. Under a 10x magnifier, the top and bottom right corners don't look trimmed at all. Jack
  19. Yessir, it's SLAB-MANIA in the Selegue collection. Dang, these things are hard to scan without funny reflections and shadows. Two SLABBED Uncanny X-Men, but I'm not at liberty to show you the slab labels, wink wink. Uncanny X-Men 211 from lo that halcyon age 1986, some mean guy grimacing on the cover because someone tore off half of his mask, in Marvelous 9.6. Nicest 9.6 I've ever seen. Uncanny X-Men 248 from long-ago 1989, first whatsisname art on X-Men, in glorious 9.4. Nicest 9.4 I've ever seen. I can't believe that I won them. (Anyone covet some slabbed X-Men books?) Slabby-Boy Jack
  20. Nicest copy of this book I've ever seen. What's keeping it down to 7.0? Jack Probably the hanging chip by the right hoof. You don't think there's a little color touch? Jack What happened to your new policy of putting emoticons when you try to crack a joke? Only people with over 14,000 posts and no Custom Titles can see color touches from mere scans ... Who's joking? Jack
  21. That's a very good cover ... especially compared to that of the following month ... and your "monthly" budget is thankful? Jack
  22. Nicest copy of this book I've ever seen. What's keeping it down to 7.0? Jack Probably the hanging chip by the right hoof. You don't think there's a little color touch? Jack
  23. WOW! I've heard so much about this book! Didn't Roy Thomas write a 12-issue miniseries in the 80s to explain those eyes? The bug's mouth kinda reminds me of some of your characters' mouths! Congrats on scoring a grail. I suppose we COULD save it a seat on the Short Bus. Jack
  24. Yoiks! Jughead stole Archie's clothes and put a big ol' orange sponge on his head for the prom? No wonder water drops are flying off his head. Jack (I can commiserate with your story but doubt I'll ever get desperate enough to order from Metro)
