  1. On 9/30/2020 at 11:26 AM, Get Marwood & I said:

    Morning Millers :)

Yesterday was a good comic day at Marwood Towers. I decided on a whim to review the February 1978 DC UKPVs in line with the 'on sale dates' of Mikes Comic Newsstand and, in doing so, identified a further book which might exist as a UKPV. I then immediately found it on my first search. That made me laugh. Marwood too. So much for being the font of all UKPV knowledge - bloody useless really aren't I really

Then the postman turned up with two parcels. Always good that, isn't it.

Pat brought me another splendid Charlie to add to the pot and then the big one - the final Marvel L Miller UK Distribution Variant - Two-Gun Kid #58 - tadaaaah!

Hooray for the TGK#58 Miller copy!

I now have confirmation of every book that my research has determined should exist with a Miller filler - here's the updated, final chart (full details over at The Pence Palace of Doom):

I own a copy of every single one now apart from Gunsmoke Western #64. He'll come, eventually:

That brings us to the conclusion of this thread. Four years ago no one knew these even existed. Remarkable really. Then @EwanUK posted one picture in one of my threads with a big fat question mark and off I went. Couldn't resist it. With full acknowledgment to Ewan (I wish he was still here - I'm sure he'd get a kick out of seeing where we've ended up), I'm quite chuffed to have been the one to flush these out and bring them to wider attention via the CGC boards (a nice reference in the latest Overstreet too in JM's market report).

So there you go then - the full set confirmed.

    Lovely :)

hey, finally remembered my password ...

    have i missed anything? :foryou:

  2. Marvelman and Young Marvelman both #27 on eBay at the minute.

Don't look like facsimiles to me.

    They're both the real deal.

    The YM 27 went for £104 - I was the under-bidder

    but really should've gone higher

Anyway, had some good dialogue with the seller, he says he's had them both for 20+ years

We've discussed the MM no.26 story in detail

So we have three MM no.26 copies - 1. Greedy seller, 2. the one Derek bought, 3. the one from the auction none of us saw!

He's under the impression that MM 27 has only 2 copies in existence?

  3. Does everyone agree that Pence copies, at least on key issues, seem to be gaining some ground in both respect and value, or is that still under debate?

They are, but only by the very discerning.

    Indeed

Do you think Brexit is more or less likely to increase the demand for pence price variants? hm

  4. May I just ask why is this so important for you?

The UK books are what they are and everyone who is interested in them knows the story. So, why make such a big deal about what CGC calls them?

This is a genuine question. Is it because the word "variant" would assume higher significance because of their relative scarcity compared with the "regular" issues whereas "UK Edition" makes them seem less "important"?

In the overall scheme of my life & loves, it's not important at all !

However, in the context of the comic hobby which I love and spend many hours researching etc I do feel that many of us are trying to right a historical wrong - in that for many years comics with pence prices were considered "reprints" and somehow inferior - the actual truth, is that they are first prints too (same American presses, same time) and ironically, almost certainly much, much rarer than their American counterparts (silver and early bronze at least)

There is no campaign to make the hobby think they're better than cents or worth more than cents, simply to say "this is the reality" - then people can be better informed, and the market will repond accordingly (and has done)

Pence keys in high grade are seriously rare - I only wish I'd bought more even 5 years ago, never mind back in the 80s when you could get a pence AF 15 for £200 (!)

While factually and logically, they are PENCE PRICE VARIANTS, CGC calling them "UK Editions" is not a big deal. But it is inaccurate.

(Graded UK only original-material comics like Cap Britain and Marvelman are also called "UK Editions", which adds to the inconsistency)

  5.

    Is £4,500 / $5,400 a record for the ASM1 ?

    An 8.0 went for $19,323 in 2012

An 8.5 pence of ASM 1 went for $16,730 (good deal) last August

Anyone have a good guess on the grade of this raw pence?

    I'll say 6.5.

    Yes I'd agree on that

so actually probably a good deal

I have a much lower pence ASM 1

he didn't have any more BTW

  6. High grade pence variants from either Silver or Bronze sell very well, and people definitely chase them, me included

mid to low pence are in similar demand to their cents conuterpart, am not sure people are fussed either way at that level of grade

however, concur on the pence being lower grade generally, but you can find exceptions

I would say a disproportionate number of HG pence are graded

I have loads I'd like to get done but it's such a chore

  7. anyyyyyyyyyyyway....

my reason for posting was to highlight the two original owner pence keys! lovely books don't you think?

I spoke to the seller, he'd bought as child and had hid them away for 50 years

he said he was "overwhelmed" with the sale prices and it would certainly be helping with his pension :)

    Is £4,500 / $5,400 a record for the ASM1 ?

p.s. PENCE variants - original PRICE variants :acclaim:

  8. Very nice! Question, I was under the impression that CGC will not grade black & white fanzines due to the fact of counterfeits? I have a FE#5 I'd love to submit

Firstly, very cool book. First UK fanzine I've seen graded!

    Nice grade to.

I have a copy of Fusion no.6 whch is a counterfeit (bought off ebay) - though I wouldn't even use that word - it's more like a photo-copy of a computer print-out but would fool an inexperienced buyer I guess.

If anyone ever needs help on these I have extensive pics of different genuine copies of all the major MM fanzines.

  9. It doesn't make sense for Vader to take on grunts as second in command in the Empire no matter how you analyze the situation, but I don't care. I loved seeing him mow through a crowd of people. :cloud9:

this was my favourite bit too! loved it

sheer horror from the rebels getting twatted

  10. Took my boys, 7 and 11 and wife to see it

All of us enjoyed it, but the boys didn't enthuse as much as with the Force Awakens

They wanted to watch New Hope immediately when they got back

I liked how the Empire bods had 1970s side-burns

  11. I hope you got golden age size bags and dont try inserting book into silver age bags or something
I was thinking the same thing.

    ++++1

For god's sake don't try fit it in a modern bag!!! :o

I'm reading this 1,000s of miles away thinking how would my non-comic Dad handle all this (he's 80) - truth is he wouldn't at all - and the risk of accidental damage to the comic is huge

Can't one of you decent boardies who live nearby help this chap directly? Take him the appropriate bag, board etc

Then talk to one of the auction houses on his behalf - who to be honest, should offer to go out and collect the book directly, host this nice gentleman etc etc make a great story and eventual sales event

I would hate the book to be lost in the post, even if insured, or damaged

Have "we" ever had another OO AA no.16 surface?

  12.

Is it the two cables missing at the top of the T and R ?

    Actually no, but you're right...

What I was seeing is a difference between the "c" in 10c

One has no bottom part of the curl

One has a bit of it

This seems to be repeated across different copies on ebay / Google so I don't think it's "wear" related

Very very minor I know but thought I'd point it out

I'm sure this is a printing anomaly rather than a variant but :cloud9:

    Great summary BTW! :acclaim:

  13. So..... before we search out (or speculate) on the answers, can I get some consensus, to summarise what the key questions are please?

    My take....

    1. Why some comics (period x to x) with cents cover prices have "T&P distribution" indicia's?

    2. Why some comics (period x to x) have different cents price fonts? Or have cents prices in boxes?

    3. Why (one example so far) does a cents cover price have a "L Miller distribution" indicia?

RE CGC, as I said earlier in the thread, with respect to them, they won't answer, because they won't know. These are new discoveries.

Remember too, the UK pence / foreign editions market as true variants is actually reletively young... CGC and Voldy still call them "UK Editions" but they use this term for both "pence variants" and genuine "UK Editions" (like Alan Class)

  14. Or, they prepared the 9P film for England and mailed it over for printing locally

Or, they made a set of color separations film for England and let THEM do their own stripping and printing.

Im still trying to understand in what scenario or market also uses 10c that had to print their own covers or comics.

    many thanks again Aman

We know that pence copies were NOT printed in England, all US comics were imported as ballast from 1959 onwards. Distribution was handled by T&P, both Marvel pence copies and DC with the much-loved giant stamps. However, as discovered above, L Miller distributed at least one title too!

I bet those comics with the different 10c font (in a box) have amended indicia's
