Growing up in the 70s, I'm also a fan of the Bronze Age Charlton War (and other titles) which are very, very affordable though sometimes hard to find in decent grade mainly due to low supply and even lower demand. But with lazy spell checking like this - on a cover to boot - it's not hard to see why the company was doomed to demolition...
Just about everything about Charlton was on the cheap side. They didn't pay well. With a few exceptions, they didn't have the "good" creators and most of the more talented ones who broke in with Charlton quickly went to DC and/or Marvel. Charlton used paper at the end of rolls with the serrated edges still present. Production values were horrible. Charlton war comics can't hold a candle to anything DC did. Trying to put them on par with DC war is laughable. It doesn't help that they didn't have iconic characters like Sgt Rock, The Unknown Solider, Haunted Tank, etc. However, that doesn't mean they can't be enjoyable. Some of the covers are very good. They do have a certain charm and they did have Sam Glanzman. I know Sam will never be rated as highly as Kubert, Heath, Severin, etc in the war genre but he did some damn fine work. I've been thinking lately about picking up cheap Charlton war when I see them. I should pull out the handful I still have from childhood.
