Hey guys,
As promised, some Heath Atlas War covers. Man, I love these.
First up, perhaps the most sought after Atlas war cover - War Comics #11. Heath. Flamethrower. Godless Communists. That's a potent mix.
Cheers!
Shep
Nice.
Reminds me of a song. "Communists roasting over an open fire".

Maybe Gil grew up wanting to be an ENT doctor.
-
Incidentally - In the LOC-page of John Carter #14 (july 1978), Catherine Yronwode (later to become editor-in-chief of Eclipse Comics) writes:
"Rudy Nebres deserves all my praise for having the courage, daring and know-how to blot out Gil Kane's crazy nostrils completely with nice, clean, black ink (well, not Gil's nostrils, we wouldn't have anymore of Kane's vibrant action panels and that would be a shame.)"
Sounds like she might have been joking.
If not........................

"Five Fingers! & Each One Meant Something!" .... yeah, especially the middle one!
Yeah, what's the deal with that blurb?
That's very funny.

I'll bring up some posts in the next couple of days. First up, a feast of DC war greytones. As I've gotten deeper back into the 1950s books, I've discovered lots of greytones and 'partial' greytones that don't pop up that often.
Nice! Looking forward to them. droooooooooooool

Here's my one high grade Atlas book.

Man, that's sweet. Wrightson should have done EVERY HoM cover.
-
Just found this little beauty on ebay. Wish I could bid on it.

Did you actually have a coonskin cap when you were a kid?
No, and I grew up in Connecticut, !. I have wanted these books ever since I was a kid and I saw one of the covers in the Fireside book, America at War - The Best of DC War Comics. Got a couple Frontier Fighters as well.
-
And finally 7 and 8
-
4,5, and 6
-
Legends of Daniel Boone 1,2, and 3
-
How about these two?

Going through what I bought yesterday and found another eyeball cover. Eye in the sky or big brother is watching you cover. An odd combination of colors on this one.
Wow, I never thought I would ever say I didn't like a Kaluta cover but there you go. That's hideous, IMO.

Thanks for getting it started!
The credit should go to Jeffro!
I'm not here for the credit. Only for the great covers.
This may be the greatest thread ever!

So few giant frog covers. Great book!

not until GL47. And he pencilled and inked the next few issues too!. I loved the release from Giella stiff brushwork. Kane on Kane is the best Kane inking!!
Good to see a fellow fan of Kane on Kane. There's some other stories/covers that he did from the different DC 50s titles. I was at dinner with Gil and Julie some years ago and he was still ribbing Julie about not letting him ink his own work. Julie wanted the productivity from the pencillers and he preferred the inks of Anderson/Giella/Greene over the more distinctive stylings of Kane or Infantino.
Marvel wised up later on too. letting Gil ink his own Hulk covers, etc. I loved his linework. So refreshing after seeing all his other more "polished" inkers for so many years.
The best thing about Kane is his "up the nose" shots.

OK, one more Rosa book as a tribute to Aparo.
Great cover
Indeed! I think Aparo is hit or miss, but this one is a definite hit for him.

Kane on Kane is indeed great. I'm lucky enough to own a piece of original art from Marvel Team Up 13 and whoever inked him on that book just destroyed Kane's pencils.

Here's the last of them. (Until I scan some more)
Thanks Jeffro, you`ve certainly breathed some life back into this thread. Great books and great scans! What model scanner do you use?
It's an HP Scanjet 3400C. I picked it up 2-3 years ago at Office Depot for $50 if I remember correctly. I don't think HP makes this model anymore.

What is the story on the Newsboy collection?
Also, just as an aside, those of us at my table at the forum dinner agreed that this is the best thread in the whole Silver Age forum.
We also agreed that it hasn't seen nearly enough action lately.
Yes Sir - get right on it, Sir..........
and methinks you may be REALLY liking those many frogmen covers.........
Those scuba covers are killer!!!!
I think those cockpit covers are my personal favs. What a great perspective.

Let you know when I get home later. I believe it's a Hewlett Packard. Have to get the exact model for ya.
Next up for scanning will be my run of Legends of Daniel Boone.

Those B&B's are sweet. I love those covers.

Wow, that's rough. Schatzi is toast.

Yeah, it's great stuff. Nobody in the mid 50's would complain about commies being roasted. Well, maybe the commies would mind.
