As a newbie I'm just getting started and have a small collection.  I collect mainly for the cover art so do any of these online services have a Cover Artist field?  That way I can search for an artist or artists that may be coming to my local comic con and see what I have that they have done.  I have my own spreadsheet but being able to scan in titles would be nice.

Collectorz just updated their cloud based version to allow for a cover artist sort, which is really nice. I am a big fan of the service, I use cloud and mobile apps and so far its been a huge help to getting back into collecting. I have not tried the mobile bar code reader but it is a free option with the cloud or desktop services. spideyscreenshot.thumb.jpeg.6e926ba980083b6bd32f537b11692008.jpeg

  2. Anyone else collecting the Skottie Young Variants? I have been a collector off and on since childhood and back into in a full swing, my wife and daughter have both gotten into the hobby due to their fondness for his Little Marvel cover work. Admittedly, I enjoy them as well. It’s been great taking them to stores and shows and seeing them jump into the long boxes on the hunt for covers they don’t have and watching them bag, board and file them in their dedicated Skottie Young box. We also picked up the run of I Hate Fairyland which is a very enjoyable book. With some off the sales MidTown has had of late we have been able to put a dent in the collection getting books at $1-$2 range. We are about 80 books in to his covers so far and have more to hunt for.

Just curious if anyone else is into collecting his covers.

Does he sell 11x17 prints?  I picked up Catwoman #4, but it just feels like the art needs to be appreciated on its own without any logos, barcodes, text, and in a format larger than the ~7"x~10" that modern comics come in to be fully appreciated.

EDIT: Yes he does!  Sent him a PM via FB and he was kind enough to point me to an authorized eBay dealer.

Just a heads up from a slightly OCD collector, his prints are an off size other than 11by17, I picked one up at NYCC and it wasn’t even close to fitting in my binder I was carrying prints in, so I traded it away. I know I have issues ?

  4. I am putting together a 1-150 run and now starting with under 40 #s. Thus far I have been getting all “reader” copies in the 2-4 range. I was attending a local library geek festival and they had a few local guys selling books, was able to get this from a guy selling some silver/bronze from his collection. I have been researching and reading all I can as the price of the books I am after gets higher so I am curious how I did on this. Thanks!

Thanks for the info on Columbus. I recently moved here (kicking and screaming) after over a decade in the D.C. area. I visited the Packrat location in Hilliard. Looked to be well organized a fairly busy. The owner seems like a cool guy. I'll check out the others while I get used to the area.

Welcome! Life long resident so I have been to them all feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need a local to chat at.

Columbus is definetely a college town with OSU so I can see why there are so many stores but is it just over saturated?

I dont think so. They are fairly spread out and two are more focused on gaming as well. Capital City is the only one that really carries Silver/Bronze in terms of a wide variety. Oh and I forgot Packrat they have two stores and are opening a third. The only real challenge is I try to support all of them as much as I can. :-)

Edit to add none are on Campus. OSU has run everyone out if they are not high rent or trendy. (Former OSU student from a time gone by)

I know of 1 local comic shop that closed it's door this year and based on what i'm hearing from the owner another may be on it's way out.  We have a lot of comic shops in the Cleveland / Akron area (got to be over 10 nice shops)) so a couple closing wouldn't be much of a shock.  But I also heard that two shops in Columbus closed this year and they don't seem to have as many shops as we have.

There are some good threads about new comic shop owners but has anyone heard of stores closing in your area this year?

I am in the area and we have more than I remember back when I was first active in collecting. Laughing Ogre, ComicTown, Capital City, Worlds Greatest, Flying Monkey, Secret Identity..Im actually pretty happy with the local market as it where. All are good shops depending on what you are looking for. My original stomping grounds where a shop on Bethel Rd and the New Market Mall. Both long closed.
