  1. Nice Jumbo collection! Wanna sell me that 70?
  2. Very nice. How close are you to that elusive 30-40 run?
  3. you know I was milling around the "post your pic" thread getting to know the faces to the names, I normally I'm a very happy content gay man......but I'd be less than honest if I said I never longed for kids like so many of you guys have. So even tho I may have free run of an apt to hang what ever the hell I want, its not with out its cost. Nieces or nephews? And they have the benefit that you can give them back to their parents when they get tired and fussy.
  4. Money aside, how hard is it to put together a Planet run? I have six or seven copies now, mostly in the VG - F range so HG isn't a big concern, but I prefer to avoid rags.
  5. Great collection of World's Finest. Thanks for posting.
  6. You know what else is out of place in an Atom Age collection? Fight Comics 31. You better send that out-of-place funny book to me before it further contaminates your collection.
  7. A full Wartime Romances run and Planet 1-10. Both amazing.
  8. now that is some kind of funny book (thumbs u +1 Very nice.
  9. And that is a lovely Fight 31. I'm jealous.
  10. and Thanks guys. I want to make Seank's head explode 1. How'd you get it? 2. Check the "Have a Cigar" thread. My head ain't exploding.
  11. As many of you may know, I was asking about Batman 1 recently in a thread which was derailed by a more interesting discussion about the investment potential of big books like that. Behind the scenes, though, I was offered a Batman 1 by a boardie I knew little about. He had never sold on the boards, which was a red flag, but he sent me a zillion photos and offered to let me inspect the book in person. He was in Las Vegas, which is not far from where I live, so I made arrangements to fly out for the weekend and meet up with him. I also brought along the girlfriend so we could have a great Las Vegas weekend if the Batman thing went south. We flew into Vegas Friday morning. Our hotel room in Ballys was on the Paris side, so we had the Eiffel Tower right outside our window. I was supposed to meet the seller at 1 pm in the Ballys lobby, We waited. And waited. And waited. Nothing. At 2 pm, I left him a PM and we went on with our day. I was a bit upset, but figured we were going to have fun in Vegas so the weekend would be worthwhile anyway. At 10:30 pm, while we were about to start sucking down some tropical drinks at Frankie's Tiki Bar, my phone rings. It's the seller. He was at Ballys, but the lobby arrangement there is strange and he couldn't find me. He had the wrong phone number for me and didn't get the correct one until he got back to his computer that night. We made plans to meet the next morning at 10 am. I let the girlfriend sleep in, and shortly after 10, my phone rings. It's the seller, looking for me, standing 10 feet away. We go to the conference room area, squat in an open room, and I inspect the Batman. I knew it was a real one the moment I opened the bag and smelled 60 year old paper. (Girlfriend later: "Did you get a woody?" Me: "Almost.) The book was pretty much exactly as described and, IMO, fairly graded. I think an eBay seller would have bumped it up a grade trying to squeeze more $$$ out of it. I decided to buy the book. We went to the bank and I handed over a thick stack of hundred dollar bills. Back in my hotel room, the girlfriend and I leafed through the book and I pointed out the various first appearances and other cool things about Batman 1. Owning a copy of this book has been an on and off goal for most of my life. This one has extensive professional restoration, but who cares? It's a Batman 1.
  12. Yup, in the Shadow of the Atomic Age, would be a good place for your ACG collection. Isn't your avatar from an ACG cover? I agree with you. A complete publisher goal is tough. I have considered it before b/c it's fun but it won't be DC nor Dell, nor Atlas. If I ever decide to go for it, I'll go for the complete ME. I tried doing that with Fawcett once. Got about 2/3rds complete and lost steam. Ronaldo once asked me if I ever thought about collecting all the Fiction House books. I told him I wouldn't because I couldn't stand to chase after titles like Wambi, Jungle Boy. Reading those stories in Jungle Comics makes my teeth hurt. Well, Wambi can be cool. It depends on which artist you catch on the feature. But, yes, there is one artist who must have started as an etch artist who worked on it and, boy, does it make one's teeth hurt as you put it. I write, so that's something I notice. I give GA books a certain amount of latitude, but I find the Wambi stories I've read to be quite dreadful. Late-run Sheena stories in Jumbo are similarly dreadful.

  14. Congratulations! Thanks for sharing that splash. It's definitely Eisnerish in its conception, though Crandallish in its execution. Thanks AS. I have 48 of her 52 appearances ... but 3 of the last 4 are going to be tough getting or even finding. Re: The art on the splash. The GCD has a note citing that this used to be attributed to Grandenetti (no doubt as it is reminiscent of his work on Dr. Drew over in Ghost and other places) but indexers are not agreeing. Crandallish is a nice way to put it. I thought more along the line of Druckerish as I thought of Mademoiselle Marie ... maybe it's the raspberry beret that's throwing me off here. Which 4 are you looking for? I love that splash. Now I want to fill in Fights from 50-86.
  15. A few of my babies before I shipped them off to go live in the bank vault:
  16. Is neither an option? Or crack? If I was really forced to pick, I'd go with Suspense 3 just for the cover. Bigger wow factor.
  17. Jumbo #31.....that's going to be the problem... Know anyone with a copy.... They seem to be quite common around here...
  18. Sorry, that would be Danish Nazi Gorilla #1, Spring of 1939. That's what they want you to believe. What about Obadiah Oldgorilla, 1843? JPS
  19. Archie #1 in a nanosecond. Much rarer book, much cooler book, and if you are into the value side of the hobby, better upside. The grade thingy in the corner is of no moment to me when comparing these two books What he said.
  20. Very nice. I keep saying I'm going to get me some Lady Lucks one of these days and never seem to get around to it.
  21. Is that a protective plastic bag on his desk...? Ol' Freddy looks a little shocked by the Shock Illustrated he's reading. And kudos to everyone who has posted photos in this thread. They're wonderful.
