  1. Yup, although still not easy to find. Volume 3 ("Olympus") still goes for $100+ in softcover in worn shape.
  2. I tend to agree with this position. I am flabbergasted seeing prices go way up on the free 50th Anniversary DC Preview book because it's supposedly the first appearance of Watchmen (a "fact" which has made it's way onto Wikipedia), in a one page preview image. I certainly believe these books can be collectible for fans of a character or series, but to suggest that non-story preview images count as captial F, capital A First Appearances feels dishonest to me. Mileage will vary.
  3. Curio and junk store with a ton of eighties comics close to my place had this Eclipse Miracleman hardcover. Not one of the super rare ones but still a steal at $25 Canadian in near perfect shape.
  4. Terrific transaction with Jason. Book arrived quickly, packaged ideally. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!
  5. Bought an Amazing Spidey 101 restored from Rick at a far better than reasonable price and it arrived quickly, and incredibly well packaged. Couldn't be happier with the transaction. Thanks for making my first board purchase so easy Rick!!
  6. Thanks y'all. The seller (local store) had this at an 8.5, which I thought was a stretch. Price was still decent.
  7. Picked this up the other day for a reasonable enough price. What say y'all?
  8. I'm still getting my sea legs as a grader, but having spent a lot of time looking at copies of ASM 101 of late, I feel pretty confident this is around 5.0-5.5. Nice copy IMO!
  9. Keep a close eye on the Golden/Silver sales forum here on the board. Over the last week a ton of classic mid-grade ASM issues have been posted at very reasonable (and in some cases excellent) prices. Keys will still cost you, but you're almost guaranteed to get a better deal here on the boards than on eBay or via a dealer.
  10. I'm the biggest Doom Patrol fan you're likely to meet, and I think they nailed it. I don't want to see the same thing from any version of the comics, where the show has shined is in melding together ideas and stories from various incarnations of the book and putting their own spin on it. I also want to give a huge shout-out for the characterizations they came up with for Rita and Larry. Rita being kind of prissy and horrified by her condition is a far more interesting take then her classic Silver Age persona (which to be honest is kind of bland) and Larry being frustrated and lonely taps into some real pathos. I wonder if we'll get a Season 2!
  11. I've ordered many books from Doug, and I concur that his grading is impeccable if occasionally a little TOO conservative. Great dealer. If he was the one who determined the grade on the Manitoba books (and his is the website that they seem to originate from exclusively) I'd take it as gospel.
  12. One time I had my girlfriend, who is a seamstress and is used to make very precise, measured cuts with no margin for error do one for me. I was too nervous and the book cost too much.
  13. I've opened a few slabs. Use a screwdriver to carefully pry them open from the side, taking care not to grind the book while you do. Usually easiest to work each side from the top down, cracking it on both sides. Eventually it'll be possible to pull the book and holder out, at which point you can VERY CAREFULLY cut it out with scissors or if you don't trust yourself, with a safety blade and a flat edge ruler.
  14. Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I appreciate the peace of mind.
  15. Hi everyone! I recent purchased this book on eBay, which despite having bad pictures was in a CGC slab, and so I was convinced of its condition. Upon receiving it I cracked it open to put it with the rest of my collection, only to note that the top of the book appears badly aligned and missing the top of the box with the character names in it. A quick examination of other copies (many graded) on eBay shows a similar issue although most not as pronounced as mine. I checked the CGC graders notes and nothing is mentioned regarding a trim. I also measured it against the issues immediately preceding and following and if it was trimmed it would only have been a fraction of a fraction of an inch, as I can't see the top of the other books when placed behind this one. So am I just being paranoid or could the graders at CGC have missed this? I'm normally not super fussy but I did drop a little more than normal on this one as an upgrade to my old copy and would hate to think it's damaged beyond normal wear and tear.
  16. Last year I completed my modest goal of collecting every issue of Doom Patrol (plus story appearances in other books) from My Greatest Adventure 80 through to the most recent series. I felt like I was done, but have recently decided to upgrade a few of the lesser SA books to a fine or better, just for my own satisfaction.
  17. An all time fave. Unsure if a press and clean would do much for it, so I'm soliciting advice from the experts!
