PGM ASM #1 72 page Annual
comicginger1789 replied to marf's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
The ripped top spine is tough...2.5-3.0 I would say. It is a harder one to find though with the white background (printed in Canada) -
6.5-7.0 from me. Another one to spend the money to clean and press if going that route to ensure the best results.
-
Definitely a 7.0-7.5 contender and one to press and clean to ensure max success if grading. Very nice book.
-
As long as it is complete, it would be a 1.0-1.5 If brittle, I doubt a presser with much worth would touch it for fear of hurting it. If they felt the paper was strong enough, maaaybe you could get it aligned a little nicer but again, someone experienced should be making that decision.

PGM Startling Terror Tales #11
comicginger1789 replied to arDeaton's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Great looking book! The spine looks browned and somewhat brittle (ie if you were to apply much pressure or pull at the covers with any little bit of strength is appears it could easily split. I will stick with 5.0-5.5 though as I know CGC likes to be kind to older books and aside form that (and the small piece missing) this would go much higher. -
So I have a book, ASM 23 I think, with tanning to edges. That book is as sharp or better than this one and it garnered a 7.0. I would think this would be 6.5-7.0 as a result. CGC dislikes discolourations to the paper and that tanning along the spine def keeps it from being higher. Seems like that is somewhat the consensus so far...who is more in line with the boards so far you or your buddy?

I do think X-Men #94 is overvalued as a key I disagree with Secret Wars #8, only because it is a great image from a fun story that ties into the history of the greatest costume change and one of Spidey's greatest foes ever. Plus, for me, when held next to ASM #252 (which is cool but a swipe) and MTU #142, it is the superior cover. The Hulk 180, 181, 182 debate interests me in no way other than if I get either one, I sell for whatever I can because I despise Hulk from that era and Wolverine, while a solid character, is not fleshed out or loved enough by me to care about debating this "trilogy" of books, hence why I take the money and run to by silver age ASM

Pen tracing/indentation and affect on grade?
comicginger1789 replied to ARyan_'s topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
So it appears there is pen on your book. That won't come off and definitely effects the grade. As for indentations alone, I have had a couple books where, when held in the light, you could make out writing indentations or numbers people had written (as though they put the comic under the paper they were writing on). These can press out but take time. So if you use someone who just does a quick press, it will NOT fix it all. You need a pro who is willing to take time with multiple presses to completely remove. -
Fewer big v numerous small
comicginger1789 replied to Ollie1733's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I have always bought whatever makes sense value wise. That could be a great $20 book for a couple bucks, it could be a $200 book for half price, it could be a $1000 book for $700. Don't buy a book because someone else says to, buy for you always. Right now for me, I am looking in the 300-1K range for books. Trying to knock off early ASMs and adding the odd LB Cole book when able. -
Any info would be great.
comicginger1789 replied to marinecorp96's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I'll also say sun fading. I does not take long for this to happen. Leave a comic in direct sun for even a few weeks and you will see changes. I had a beater in the back window of my Saab in highschool that just cooked and you could hardly tell what used to be there. I wish high school me had had the wherewithall to take a pic because it was wild. -
The grade is in: Hulk 181
comicginger1789 replied to travizb's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
The letters in HULK and the back cover look quite dirty so definitely does not appear to have been cleaned. I think that posed a bigger defect visually but I know CGC does not hammer that kind of "contact soiling" as much because it is generally able to be removed. The finger bends could improve it. I think at best you could see 7.0. A press won't fix those spine ticks and some of the corners seems to have wear consistent with 6.5-7.0 books. If you think a 0.5 bump is worth the attempt, go for it. I would be surprised if it got 7.5 and stunned if a press/clean got it to 8.0 range. -
Seven Seas 4 or 6 Which Do You Prefer?
comicginger1789 replied to ThothAmon's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I’ll go 6. The dark red at the top behind the title of 4 actually bothers me. Like, give me more artwork behind that title, which is what they did with 6. Both would be welcomed with open shark mouths into my collection should they ever swim into my feeding range. -
*Grade Is In!* PGM Batman 423
comicginger1789 replied to Nschenks's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I agree, 8.5 to 9.0 and a 9.2 would not shock me. Definitely press it to minimize the appearance of that crease. My ASM 238 has a similar crease that when pressed was minimized greatly in terms of appearance. It also had some minor spine ticks and achieved a 9.0 -
*Grade Is In!* PGM Iron Fist 14
comicginger1789 replied to Nschenks's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I think 5.0 for sure is obtainable here. The front is sharp enough to warrant it. The back will keep it from exceeding 6.0 but you never know. I've seen crazier 6.5's than this. I will settle at 5.5 personally. -
No but I bet the 0.5 in the book are missing something....a page, a centrefold, a poster. That or they are the most horrific looking stained, water damaged, big nibbled, fire singed examples to the point where the fact they exist and are maybe complete warrants the lowest of the low grades. I just mean I have seen pieces the size missing on this book (which I can kind of see now but a different angle or inside cover shot would tell a better story) that have garnered a 2.0-2.5 grade
-
I see it now. A chunk missing top edge on back. I disagree that it’s a 1.0 or 0.5. The 0.5 is reserved for an incomplete book and a 1.0 would have multiple pieces missing along with much more. It’s a large chunk but the fact it’s on back helps it. Probably still gets a 2.0
-
Definitely press and clean....probably in the Fine range now, could bump into the 7.0 range
