Man, I think that is a fantastic goal.  If there is one thing I've learned over the years - 20k cards is one thing ... 20k books is QUITE another!  Good luck on your quest!

Oh brother.... I mistyped :makepoint: it should have said 2,000 books.... I already have 2,000 books .... And it's a problem lol. I'm trying to get that number down (:. I want to move at some point and the 20 short boxes is a bear to move especially when you are as neurotic about condition as I am. I started by trying to complete a couple runs and then books kept coming.

Some of our peers have well over 20,000 books though some have separate warehouses for their books.

Their whole idea was to change the way things were done. Which they did. But some are not sure that it was done with the best intentions. Also, people don't like change in general.

Yeah and I'm in both of those camps .... I think it was done as a ploy for hype .....

And the older I get the more change becomes my enemy (I'm 32 going on 84:preach:)

i know i got snippy in the beginning of the thread but i wasnt aware of the short which was reported by bleeding cool on feb 4th. i dont pay attention to comic news sites so i was not up to date on the news cycle. i just became aware of it and well, see my post above.

i want to apologize to you and @awakeintheashes since i was arguing from a ignorant position.

i wont attribute to malice what can be explained, in this case, by what i see as incompetence.

All good brotha, I'm always down for a good flame war... I enjoy getting into it with people if that's what they want to do and I never take things personally even when people try to get personal. I may throw insults if they are thrown my way but it's all in good fun as far as I'm concerned.

I never read much Valiant and for all I know Dinesh, this book, and this company could be great. Just discussion for discussions sake here. I have no horse in the race.:foryou:

  5. Very cool story and collection.

I'm in my thirties started collecting comics when I was 5 due to family members planting that seed. I stopped collecting for a few years around 12 years old but kept reading and as a teenager read most of everything Alan Moore wrote. That reignited the collecting bug in me. I didn't start getting obsessive about it again until I was probably 24. Then I started completing runs and collecting specific first appearances and keys.

I'm trying to trim my collection of over 20,000 books down and focus on the books that I can't get out of my head.... Namely HOS 92 ASM 129 and MS 5. Most of the other big targets have been aquired that are reasonable.... Those three have alway been slightly out of my reach in the grades I want but I'm in the market for mid grade copy of one of them right now.

Love the books, the hobby, and the people. Comics collecting has been a great joy for me through the years.

All this talk and nobody at all commenting on the actual contents of the book.  :D. How was the story, the art, does it engage you?

I mentioned it in passing :nyah:

Side note I was thinking about picking up a couple copies of  "You Promised Me Darkness". I read the preview wasn't impressed with the writing and now don't think I'll buy. Anyone think I should reconsider?

One thing to add to the discussion is that Bad Idea probably had a fixed number in mind for first prints for all the reasons listed, marketing, hype, secondary value, etc., but that was their plan and they stuck with it.

    I could see this.

My question is what was the print run and how long after pre-order was available did they sell out.

If your premise is true then by sticking to that number they are trying to make the FP as exclusive as possible which is there prerogative and totally fine.

To make the non-exclusive NFP available the same day is definitely going to shape some public opinion on them which is evident by my and others view on this method of release. They could have waited to drop the NFP two weeks and it wouldn't be perceived in the same way. Putting the two books out the same day was not a prudent PR move in my opinion.

As I said in my above post:

"If the writing and art is good the book will stand its own merits, no matter the perceived issues with it's release."

"At the end of the day maybe they just had a good ground game and hyped the book well and sold out quick if so more power to them. Either way, I'd like to know what the initial print run for the first print is and how quickly they sold out from the time they became available. You can say they are protecting themselves but I think the fact that the "not first printings" are in good supply and readily available does not jive with that line of thinking."

you obviously dont know the meaning of market manipulation or white knight. i just provided a different point of view which you obviously are not interested in. there were plenty of stores that could have been contacted that you could have ordered from, stop your crying. you knew months in advance had you been paying attention how this was going to work. sorry not sorry they couldnt deliver it the way you are accustomed to. work harder next time.

Quite defensive.... And seemingly the only one who feels the way you do.

Once again First Print and Not First Print come out the same day. The Not First Print  is still readily available, So they obviously weren't worried about printing too much and protecting themselves. But hey whatever guy, you love them good for you ...

You want to take on all comers to defend something you say you have no attachment to other than being a fan and  providing a different viewpoint. Yet while doing so you're being overly adversarial to other peoples viewpoints coming off like an *** . Cool that should bring people to your line of thinking.:makepoint:

Too put it simply if I could manipulate the market I would do.  So I don't really care if they are, it's foolish to not try to make your own assets more valuable. It when it's done blatantly on a product that people feel like they are being taken for a ride. For you to sit there and act like "this is not that" is intellectually disingenuous. I asked how everyone else was viewing this to see if they saw it how I did and how it affected their view of Bad Idea. You being a fan of them has affected my point of view on them more than their actions.

If you are trying to paint bad Idea in a better light to people who don't necessarily like this "perceived manipulation" maybe don't be so contentious and just so you don't seem so daft in the future:

White Knighting: can also more generally refer to someone who rushes to the defense of another online, usually a person whose actions aren't seen as worthy of defense.

define market manipulation and how they profit from it?

I think it's pretty simple. Releasing the "not first print" at the same time (both having a release date of 3/3/21) as the first print feels like a gimmick and an intentional mechanism to drive the value of the very limited first print up.

It seems people had to have quite the foresight to be able to get a first print. A foresight most of the general public was not privy too unless they really had an ear to the ground.

At the end of the day maybe they just had a good ground game and hyped the book well and sold out quick if so more power to them. Either way, I'd like to know what the initial print run for the first print is and how quickly they sold out from the time they became available. You can say they are protecting themselves but I think the fact that the "not first printings" are in good supply and readily available does not jive with that line of thinking.

If the writing and art is good the book will stand its own merits, no matter the perceived issues with it's release.

The fact that you feel the need to "White Knight" so hard for Bad Idea or throw terms like Libel at Ygog for voicing an opinion on the boards is a little odd, Especially considering most of us are just irritated we couldn't get a first print two months out from release.

You don't need to defend them so vigorously from a few dudes on the internet who wanted to buy the first  print of their book.

Pretty sure Bad Idea has lost a lot of good will. To say that my interest in this story, and the rest of their lineup, has plummeted would be an understatement.

    I'm with you there.

A lot of books I was interested in as they were coming out never seemed to make it to the shelves at the LCS's (Ice Cream Man, something is killing the children, Department of Truth among others)

I was able to scoop up a couple NM+ copies  of HaHa when it came out but they were already marked up to $10.

    Wild Modern Market

  11. So I'm interested in the book the story may have some legs. Quite irritated the first prints seem to be impossible to get (Even though it doesn't come out until next month) and I'm not really a fan of the fact that they seem to have intended to manipulate the market that way.

Either way the story looks to have some promise and wanted to see what others thoughts were.

    Avengers #57

Edge of Spider Verse # 2

    Star Wars # 42 ( 2x)

Something is Killing the Children # 1

Those 4 ( 5 if you count SW #42 twice ) are probably my biggest losses , don’t get me wrong - I was able to offload for more than I paid but holding them a bit longer would’ve worked out better . Considering selling all the Dark Horse Star Wars comics I had was essentially “ free money “ the sting wasn’t as bad longterm . I believe they have room to grow, but the older issues will be easier to locate again at obviously higher prices IMO.

Didn't sell to early.... But I didn't pick up "Something is Killing the Children" when it came out. I knew it was coming out a few months before it did, I liked the concept and wanted to pick up a couple. I was in an extended comic buying break after blowing my budget upgrading my WBN 32, getting Warrior Mag 1 and a few other books. While on break I missed the boat in what was my targeted grade of 7.0 on SS3. My other targets continue to get further and further out of reach in mid grades (HOS 92, ASM 129) continue to climb out of reach.

I scooped up a couple copies of Haha #1 we'll see if that goes the ice cream man route......

  13. Anybody here who knows me knows I'm a huge Moon Knight fan.

With a director in place and lead role prospectively filled by Oscar Isaac we are seeing real progress on the Disney+ series front. I'm cautiously optimistic we'll continue to see momentum going in the right direction. I've always like that Moon Knight was a niche character and didn't want him to get a movie or series that would be done improperly and do a disservice to one of my favorite characters. Hope it is done right and done well, only time will tell.

It seems people either love or hate the character. I'm sure this will devolve into a debate on the merits of the character at some point.:nyah:
