CGC and eBay Partner on Expert Review Service
Dick Pontoon replied to Aweandlorder's topic in Comics General
What do we generally ask for in the "Hey Buddy, Can You Spare a Grade?" forum? A front and back scan. We seem to have a goodly number of members who are on the money or +/- .5. What gets used in any of the annual grading contests? A front and back scan. A lot of folks here seem to do pretty well under those conditions. What do the majority of people selling books on the Boards use? A front and back scan. (Though there’s a growing number of people who only scan the front.) Again, doesn’t seem to be an issue or a stumbling block for the buyers or sellers. I don’t think CGC is going to have too difficult a time approximating a grade, especially with the spread they’ll be operating under. -

Be wary of recommendations from Facebook groups. There are some nincompoops out there who don't know their nostril from a hole in the ground propagating techniques and methods that are flat out wrong and potentially harmful to books.

How does restoration affect value?
Dick Pontoon replied to BrooksR's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
There's no set percentage. Depends on the amount and type of resto, whether professional or amateur and what the book is. Is it a big key? Is it in a slab? Is it a book that is readily available unrestored? -
Or in other words, get busy with the boxes not bompy in the hot tub.

Seems to be a recurring problem. Have not bought anything today but it wasn't working a few weeks ago and I had to pay by CC. The last few purchases I made days or a week later were fine. -
Yeah, take it slow and don’t put in so many hours at once that you burn out. Do it in bits and pieces, like plugging away at building a run.

Yes, but you can go through the USPS site and pay with Paypal - I do it all the time. I am all over that. Paypal offers the discounted price on shipping, so that is what I was looking for. It doesn't work that way. You can ship via USPS.com and pay with PayPal (or credit card) but you don't get the PayPal discount.

AF15 Conundrum
Dick Pontoon replied to MatterEaterLad's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Also, if anyone here other than gadzukes obviously can identify this comic based on back cover alone and the tiniest of colour visible from the front cover, I would be very VERY impressed. Plus I know that by posing this I am likely to drive some people crazy which is always a good thing. I'll say Conan #19. Gadzukes? -

Yes! Exactly! I’m not surprised everyone is making a fuss, but c’mon guys! This is one step removed from the "Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?" Forum. And for many folks here, yes, this service would be stupid and worthless. But we are a tiny niche of the collecting world. There’s countless people buying comics who don’t know how to grade. Look at all the new guys who turn up here asking for opinions on severely overgraded books they’ve purchased or are looking at on ebay. -
There's no set percentage. Someone like @ Get Marwood & I would have a better idea than I.

True, just throw it out It was an honest question.

Are pence copies fetching that much? I don't keep up with those.

And I’m late to the blanket party but wanted to chime in anyway. I think the situation sounds extremely fishy based on the circumstances. That said, I recently relisted a $15 book on ebay and when it sold I couldn’t find it anywhere. It wasn’t with the other issues of the same title I was selling. I couldn’t find it misfiled in any other boxes. I have no record of selling it on the Boards. I have no record of selling it on ebay. (I thought I may have sold it after the initial listing to an ebayer in a multiple book deal, but still have no paper trail.) While the details of the story here sound awful suspicious, it is possible to lose, misplace or,lose track of a book. To top it off, the buyer who wanted it was incredibly obnoxious. I have 1-day handling and immediately sent them an apology, and they flipped out, got angry, said it was a huge inconvenience and problem (even though at any given time there’s about 2 dozen copies listed) and left me a neutral, my first in 20 years on ebay. I suppose I should consider myself lucky I didn’t get negged.

I sold an issue of Tales of Suspense to Gene Colan many years ago before he passed. -

Upgraded my #15 today. Not quite in Parker territory, but still pretty nice. Scan got cropped, but I don't have time to re-do. Scanner bed is making some glitches, too. -

Is it time for George Foreman yet? "Get into my comfort zone!" "The fat drips right off!" "I'm not gonna pay a lot for this muffler!" "Punch out those flaws!" -
All of Marvel’s 60s output is a core title for me, except for the westerns and romance. There’s only about 8 of them until ’68: Amazing Spider-man, Avengers, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Strange Tales, Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish, Journey Into Mystery/Thor, X-Men. Not sure where I stand on Sgt. Fury. I;m only interested in about the first 20 issues, so I suppose I wouldn’t consider it a core title, though he’s an important character.
