  1. I never realized what a complete recluse Ditko became.  I don't believe a photo of him exists beyond the mid 1960's when he quit Marvel.  If so, that's pretty remarkable. Surely someone must have taken a photo of him shopping or around town later in his life hm

Yes, now that sounds like a much better and practical idea that what I had suggested earlier.  doh!

Avoids the unnecessary shipping and reholdereing cost along with the additional chance for potential damage to the book during the shipping and reslabbing process.  (thumbsu

Man, that's a ton of wear on your case and right at the critical spot down the whole spine.

You should probably consider getting it reholdered as it's hard to tell between what's on the case, as opposed to what is on the actual spine itself.  hm

Beautiful book ickwinzs!  No need to reholder, you can remove the scratches with Meguiar's PlastX.  It's a clear plastic cleaner and polisher.  Works amazing, and I have used it on scratches such as this on my CGC cases with fantastic results!

Well, if you think the 9.0 copy went for crazy money, just take a look at the CGC 9.6 copy in the current CC auction:

    http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=709009  :screwy:

Even though it is the Pacific Coast pedigree copy, already at an astounding $22,500 with still another 11+ days to go is a ton of money for this book.  Fully understand that it is currently the highest graded copy at 9.6, but there are also 6 other 9.6 copies keeping it company, with another 13 nipping at its heels in CGC 9.4 graded condition just waiting for an potential upgrade.  hm

The 9.6 ended up selling for $32,000.00 :whatthe: The 9.0 ended at $4140.00 :o

Anyone care to share their #28's?

My personal preferences go even farther.  To my taste, the preservation of the cover white on this ish overrides very minor structural flaws that might be found in grades below near mint.  I'd rather have a copy with "Curator" white cover stock and 9.2 structure than a perfectly structured copy with aging showing on the cover paper.  Any copy that combined the best of both would be worthy of a significant premium from my perspective.

Is there a photo of the 9.8's back cover?

    Wasn't that Dans brother?

If anyone is interesting in re-reading the first 17 issues plus the Annual, this is a great read.  Not every story was a winner though, but Stan was still getting into his groove with Spidey.  How Sandman was beaten with a vacuum cleaner is beyond me lol

It wasn't the pages that were sticking out that bothered me, as you are right, that's super common on a lot of SA Marvels....it was the lack of any visible overhang on the top or bottom edge. That's not common at all. In fact, I am not sure I have EVER seen a SA Marvel that didn't have at least a little.

Top and bottom edges look painfully sliced and diced

  8. I remember reading in some older threads where board members had identified a specific series of bar code #'s, which reflected tighter graded books during that period.  I found it very interesting and even wrote down one such series that had been discussed: barcodes starting with 093 to 097 as very tightly graded.  I'm sure other boardies have information such as this, and of course it is subjective, but I find it quite enlightening to hear from others about their thoughts and observations on tighter and looser grading periods (or barcode series #'s which are identified as such)
