Traveling to San Diego this week and i would like to know which stores or store was a good place to check out.

Mainly looking for Golden age and silver age books

Empire Collectibles run by Bob is a great choice!  The only other one that comes to mind is Southern California Comics.

Unless I'm missing something 8.0 had a tiny tape pull

That appears to have been on the plastic case.  I had requested larger scans of the front cover when it was initially offered by CL, and that defect was not present when they emailed me the photos of the 8.0.  But there did appear to be a bottom right corner crease.

I seem to recall this book was also a CGC 7.5 the first time it got slabbed long ago...

So this book has likely now been pressed for a third time!  Is there a limit to how many times before the book is so flattened, it starts to damage the structure of the comic?  And does the "1/6" written on the cover have the potential of getting smeared with every additional press? hm

  4. I once had an ASM #36 CGC 9.2 that arrived with rust on the staples. I paid a pretty penny at auction, and was horrified. I sold it in a later auction at a loss because I can't do rust (especially on a 9.2).

Gorgeous #20, I'd leave it as is too. Mine is a 7.0 with a near flawless spine save for a 2 mm split at the lower staple. I thought it was a sure VF.

I'm the same way, I don't like rusty staples on a high grade book (tsk)

Thats one of the reasons why I always buy graders notes for slabbed books. I've had a few times where I stopped a definite purchase because of notes disclosing rust.

That's extremely smart to do, especially for a high dollar book. I remember back in the day, I would call in to CGC to get grader's notes for "free" and talk to Steve Borock or Mark Haspel on the phone as they discussed all the notations and defects on a particular book. They would even tell me what the primary grader, secondary grader and final grader's individual scores were on a copy

  6. The only thing that stands out is a single crease on the spine but looks uber tiny as well as some blunting on the bottom right hand corner of the FC. Even with those two things I'm thinking a 9.2. If its not been pressed then there are most likely some bends or a dent that would show up in the notes. Maybe a rusty staple (I hope not)? An awesome looking book with white pages! If the notes show fixable entries (or none at all) that book has CPR written all over it.

There is a small non-color breaking dent on the front cover above Spidey's right hand and a small non-color breaking bend on the back cover which is near invisible. Fortunately, no rust on the staples. I think Joey could definitely work some magic on this book, but I don't plan to ever send it in for pressing.

  7. Unfortunately I got there very late in the afternoon but was able to meet Joey who was extremely cool, knowledgeable, and gracious with his time. Saw Al from Amazing Collectibles perusing the room and working the dealers ;) and had a chance to say hi to Bob of Empire Collectibles. Lots of wheeling and dealing going on in the booths for sure. Thanks to Terry who is a great guy, and for putting on the show. I believe the Action #1 was a CGC 7.0 but can't remember what type of resto it had?

It had a "conserved" label or something like that. That was a weird booth. A glass case with the Flash Showcase book, an Action 1 and two boxes of beat up dollar books. That guy with the scarf looked exactly] like his photo in the Overstreet guide

lol I believe there was also a Superman #1 in the case
