You are seeing a comic book that many thought did not exist. This is the cover of IF AN A-BOMB FALLS. This COLD WAR CIVIL DEFENSE COMIC BOOK was produced in 1951, at the height of ATOMIC PARANOIA. The rarity of this comic book cannot be overstated. If an A-Bomb Falls (U S Government, 1951, 8 pages) Rare. Designed as a brochure, but only published as a color strip on the front page of the Washington Post in July 1951. Only a handful of copies of the brochure were made. 6. After a decade of searching I unearthed a Cold War/Anti-Communist grail for my collection. Published in 1947, this notorious Is This Tomorrow Advance Variant surfaced at Wizard World Chicago. Very rare with only 4 known copies in existence. Overstreet says "Contains -script and art edited out of the color edition, including one page of extreme violence showing [a] mob nailing a Cardinal to a door... the two black and white copies listed... surfaced in 1979 from the [Catechetical] Guild's old files in St. Paul, Minnesota." The message printed on the cover even states that the comic "contains a number of errors that we are now correcting." The cover message goes on to solicit suggestions regarding distribution as well as how to improve the content. And the back cover message is also tantalizing: it asks for ideas on what might be included in a planned future promotional comic with the working title This Is The Answer, which would have elaborated on the alternative to communism. See image of the colour version that had 4 million copies published.

  11. Hooked! CGC 9.2 Qualified (Sticker Attached to Cover) SOLD! graphically illustrates the dangers of heroin addiction. Smoking marijuana, often a precursor to more serious rug addition, is depicted along with other effects and consequences such as painful withdrawal, prostitution to get drug money, overdosing, and death by drug overdose. In the story told here, drug abuse tears a family apart and ruins two people's lives. The begins with Eddie recounting how he got started smoking pot through peer pressure. He soon learns how to use "H" (heroin) by snorting it and doing "skin pops". He meets a girl who begs him to quit and that only drives him to start shooting up. He soon starts stealing from her to keep the habit going. Eventually he gets his girlfriend hooked on "the junk" and she must start prostituting herself so they can both get their heroin. This miserable life continues for them for a while until one day she overdoses and dies. At the funeral Eddie is shunned by his family and called a murderer by hers. A very sad and scary story with a realistic tone. 32-pages, full-color, all newsprint, 6-in. x 4-in.
  12. Heeling Hitler by Jack Boothe (circa 1941). Staple-bound booklet of Anti-Nazi editorial cartoons by Jack Boothe of the Vancouver Daily Province. Collection published by the city of Vancouver. The Canadian perspective on events is quite interesting for the U.S. reader -- most if not all of these were obviously drawn before the United States entered the war. The cartoons satirize not only Hitler and Mussolini, but also Goering, Goebbels, the Vichy French, Stalin, and even the isolationist stance of Charles Lindbergh. It took me a decade to locate this book.
  13. I will be attending for the first time in 4 years.
