Anyone see the 9.8 Signature Series of a second print #1 on ComicLink last night? Went for $2100 :whatthe:

I’ve never had an interest in collecting the different colored logos but I had an inkling that this may go big since it’s the only one on the census…but certainly not that big.

I was in on that one until it got crazy! I'm a bit of a colored logo nerd...that one would've looked reaaaally good in my collection.

A new copy of Thorn Tales from the Lantern will be in the June 20-23 Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction on Heritage. The listing says that they’ve graded it as NM but no pics just yet. No mention of signatures or sketches either. Very curious to see what this will look like:

Looking forward to watching this one!

The Bone cousins were involved in a couple crossovers in the mid-to-late 90s which contributed to the only interior pages by Jeff Smith that have ever been in the open market: Shi/Cyblade: The Battle for Independents #1 and Castle Waiting #1. By my guess, there’s no more than five of these pages out there including the one below.

This is the first page of the Bones’ appearance in Castle Waiting which was a story written & drawn by Linda Medley and published by Cartoon Books for 4 issues. Our anonymous collector says Jeff pencilled and inked the Bones and created the lettering. Linda inked her characters and the backgrounds, and, impressively, does not appear to have pencilled anything first. Don’t know how these artists do it.

Another great piece...thanks for sharing @DocGo! I just picked up a run of Castle Waiting..looking forward to reading it even more now that I know there's a Bone appearance!

I’ve always been partial to the Phoney Bone as Ahab too since #13 was the first Bone comic I bought off the rack.

Me too!! I can still smell the dingy old comic shop I discovered it in...I saw those little white dudes and was completely taken with them. I remember it vividly!

This is the first time I’ve even this page colorized lol I’ve still only read Bone #1 in color when it came out in the 10th Anniversary edition. The background for the new One Volume Edition cover was part of a conceptual art piece done for the Nickelodeon movie that never came to be.

Niiiice...I've never seen that painting before...it's beautiful! Is there more concept art out there that you know of?

    $107 shipped.

    Wowzers.

The last time I saw that Bone mug was in April 2021. Came with the box too but went for way more than I was willing to pay.

How much did it go for??

I'm with you on another art-sized Artist's Edition, perhaps of the first eight issues. I’m surprised more people don’t talk about The Great Cow Race by IDW. It was spectacularly done.

I'd love to see the whole series divided up the way the trades are, and done up as artist's editions...it'd be an incredible collection of books!

They need to do an art print of the newest cover to the One Volume Edition.

Agreed! It's cool how they repurposed that art with a different background...that's the first panel of Issue #7 when Fone Bone and Thorn arrive at the Spring Fair...they turned Fone's frown upside down and ditched Thorn's basket.

I really wish these artworks were up my sleeve rather than just their images and stories. Haven’t even touched the best stuff yet. The anonymous collector was both lucky and smart to acquire these when he did.

It's all very cool...thanks for working it out with the collector so we're able to see these gems. :)

Are you saying you have everything that you wish you did? I expect to see your list first…:busy:

I definitely don't have everything I wish I did..lol..I've got over 1000 raw issues now, around 90 #1s of various printings, and at least one of every printing of every issue. I'd like to complete a set of 9.8s..that's a long-term goal.

Favourite items in my collection: the #1 and OA from the Tuki Kickstarter, the Before Bone Artist Proof, Red Dragon and Smiley cold cast figures, and a couple of pristine copies of the Image #2 newsstand editions.

Don't have, wish I did: Tales From The Lantern is the glaring hole in my collection...someday!  @DocGo, that ugly clay mug you posted a while back is something I've never seen in the wild..would love to get my hands on one of those too.

If I could create a Bone item:
-I would love to see more figures..maybe a series of them.
    -a 40th Anniversary #1 reprint in a few years
-a large format Artists' Edition omnibus - similar to the one they did for the Great Cow Race
-and more art prints..lots of em :D

  6. Two things today..first, a quick shoutout to @WilliamG.Staggers..I purchased a first print #1 from him in 9.2 which arrived today. Always appreciate the opportunity to buy from the members of this community!

Second, I was looking through my collection today and got to thinking about what you guys might have tucked away in your Bone collections.
    • Which items are your favourites?
    • Is there anything you don't have that you wish you did?
    • If you could create any Bone item that we haven't seen yet, what would it be?

@DocGo great OA posts...can't wait to see what else you've got up your sleeve!

Anyone notice the auctions have kind of dried up? There was a while where HA auctioned 9.6s and 9.8s of #4 seemingly every auction. Several 9.8 #9s and 11s over a few months too. Not much new on eBay for a while too. Appreciate the two #1s on CL but it’s pretty slim pickings compared to last fall.

I got one of those HA 9.8 #4s...bought it months ago and just opened it yesterday (I'm Canadian, and shipped it to a US address..just took me longer to get it home than I thought it would). The book doesn't look anywhere near 9.8, and the back of the slab was cracked. Not sure I'll be able to do anything about it either since it was purchased so long ago. Suuuuper disappointing. :(

After nearly 12 years of signings, my collection of Bone #38 in Signature Series 9.8 is finally complete. For those not in the know, this was the only Bone issue with multiple covers that were released concurrently as well as the only issue with front covers not drawn by Jeff Smith exclusively. From left to right here are the credits: Jeff Smith pencils & inks with painted colors by Charles Vess, Jeff Smith pencils with designs & paints by Alex Ross, Frank Miller pencils & inks with colors by Jeff Smith (series colorist for the covers during this period, Elizabeth Lewis, also contributed).

The first signature was on 8/21/2011 and the last on 5/30/2023. I was beginning to lose hope on Alex Ross so I’m very glad CGC put his in-house signing together!

    Fantastic, dude! That's really something.

Boneville.com revealed the cover to More Tall Tales a couple days ago. Unfortunately it won't be released until September 5th but it looks like it'll be a fun read:

I've seen all of Jeff's pages, and some of the guest art for this book..it's gorgeous all the way around. Excited to read it in September!

I don't think I ever bought a pack from this set or Series 3 but I remember buying tons of Series 1 (sketch card was incredibly elusive). I bought this on eBay about a decade ago. Any of you have the trading cards or remember collecting them?

What's the sketch card you're referring to? Is it still elusive?

I’m sure most of the people who read this thread know but just in case: the auction on Heritage tonight was for a CGC 9.8 2nd print of #11. Both the CGC label and the auction title didn’t mention this.

I bought a 1st print #11 in 9.8 from Heritage a couple months ago, and this one went for double what I paid! Crazy!!

    • #4 - 1st appearance of Kingdok and The Hooded One
    • #5 - 1st appearance of Lucius Down
    • #23 - 1st appearance of Bartleby (some of the #22s have this designation and it’s incorrect)
    • #28 - 1st appearance of Roque Ja (incorrectly listed as “Roque Ja Bone”)
    • #36 - The Hooded One’s identity revealed
    • #48 - 1st appearance of Lord Tarsil
    • #50 - “Death” of Lord Tarsil
    • #54 - “Death” of Kingdok, Lucius Down, and The Hooded One
    • #55 - Thorn becomes Queen of the Valley

Just adding some fairly obvious ones to the list - @docgo, you can weigh in on the relevance of some of the lesser characters/Mystery Cow as it relates to this conversation!

#1 - first Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, Smiley Bone, Red Dragon, Rat Creatures, Ted
#2 - first Thorn, Miz Possum, Possum Kids
    #3 - first Gran'ma Ben
    #8 - first Mystery Cow

  10. Just a quick appreciation post to shout out a couple regular contributors in this thread.

@docgo - thanks for helping a total noob navigate the early stages of building a collection. Always enjoy our conversations!

    and

@WilliamG.Staggers - thank you for a great transaction - I finally dipped my toe into the wonderful world of 9.8s. These arrived today...5 down, 50 to go. Thanks dude!

I am by no means an expert on the multiple printings of the first 14 books, but according to comicbookrealm (no idea how reliable they are), the dark yellow is the 2nd print, lavender is the 3rd print, purple is the 4th print, a lighter yellow is the 5th print, and a red logo with the price & issue number also in red is the 6th print. Maybe @videoloop can enlighten us with a definitive answer…

I'm travelling with my new wife at the moment, so I'm not at home to post photos, but according to my inventory list, I have the following for #6:

    1st - Red
    2nd - Blue
    3rd - Lavender
    4th - Dark Purple
    5th - Yellow
    6th - Orange

1st and 6th print logos can look very similar - especially in photos with poor lighting.

Hope this helps! When I get home, I can take photos of the run if you guys want to see them. :)

The mini Bone #1 is what I’m most interested in. Wonder what it’s condition will be.

The mini #1 is AWESOME. It's printed on really nice heavy stock, and the loose one I have is in great condition..I imagine the ones in the red box will be mint. I've got two more coming by way of the kickstarter (I have a problem..lol)

This is the item I'm curious about.  Really just curious about going rate.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/123733044985?hash=item1ccf106ef9:g:b6gAAOSw6jJcTj7a

These have been hovering around $275-330 (with everything intact, without damage, and often sealed). That will probably start to creep up now that they're no longer available direct from CB.

They sold that red box set with an original drawing by Jeff. He did 50 of them that were fully inked and then watercolored by Steve Hamaker. All had the same basic setup of the cover to #11 with green grass, a blue sky, and Fone reading from a book. Sounds boring but they were pretty well done.

Ahhh I've seen a couple of those around...just didn't know where they came from. #11 is still one of my favourite covers... :x

Glad you got one of these, dude!

That's incredible, I'm stoked for you!! I'd love to see how good one of his file copies is. I had to do a triple take when I saw that as a reward tier.

I got on about a half hour after launch, and those bad boys were long gone. I think I used up all my Kickstarter mojo managing to snag an Eric Powell art commission slot in the one he just launched 😆

Thank you! I did a triple take too, and I get giddy every time I think about it!!

My keys to Kickstarter success: 6 parts fangirl insanity, 2 parts beginner's luck, and literally all of my moneys. hahaha...congrats on the Powell commission! I haven't read The Goon yet, but it's high on my list. :)

    Congrats! You certainly deserve it!

    Thanks brother!!

I started collecting Bone in February last year, and I'm legit addicted. Among my 500+ raw Bone comics are at least one of every printing of every issue (except the Image Newsstands - HMU if you have any you want to unload..still a few holes there lol), this will be my 2nd first print #1..I've got 3 of the limited edition HC One-Volumes, the AP of Before Bone, the limited edition Cow Race Artist's Edition, all the RASL and TUKI stuff, the toys, the art......and yet I still feel like Ariel......
