Think about a Steve Dillon Preacher or Hellblazer page, for example.

But the fact that Dillon forgeries exist is known... I came accross 3 at the same time last year and, so, that didn't surprised me when I saw them.

And is copying in-demand artists a good way to go when you do forgeries ? (it's an open question)

    For me, it's the 100 $ bill.

What happened to Drewsky here let me think maybe a good way to go (sorry for this expression) would be the opposite, as we can see in that case... it "worked" (the purchase was done, even if cancelled afterwards).

For me, it's the 10 $ bill (same value for the counterfeit bills I saw when I was young)

  2. Why make counterfeit versions of these ?

Just an hypothesis : maybe because it was... somewhat easy, and quick, to produce a counterfeit version ? And so make it on an "industrial" way ?

For example, assuming Heritage sold real ones here (look deep into the high-res versions of the page at the right in HA auctions) :

    https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/russ-manning-korak-son-of-tarzan-3-page-5-original-art-gold-key-1964-/a/7066-94740.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515

... I'm not familiar too much with Russ Manning art, but what surprise me is these originals are too much "perfect" :

    - a blank page to work with, without any blue mark (why not... especially because we're looking here pages from the 60's)

    - the art is too much neat (pencil traces perfectly erased, almost no corrections) as if Manning rendered the cleanest possible job and needed whiteout only on rare occasions

    - almost no productions marks or editing marks from the editor and publishing house (mentions, stamps, etc...)

For me these kind of originals are the perfect candidate to be replicated, and then "enhanced" (add some whiteout, and maybe some china ink here and there to create variations in the blacks...)

We aren't here with a Klaus Janson inked page with many ink marks/tries on the borders, and large whiteout corrections if the penciler he was inking was not skilled ! (BTW I'm a huge Janson fan - it's just to give you the opposite image !)

After all, some of counterfeit money bills I've seen when I were young had a low value... but enough value to make them circulate easily...

Thanks so much for responding! I had run across those, but was hoping to find the one for cheaper and the full (non cropped) version of the other, but it's always good to have a safety net :)

    Yes.

These are magnificient samples of A.W. multiples skills. This guy is a legend ! (too bad I have only original inks from him in my collection, but on 3 different pencillers, I must consider myself lucky already !)

One of the most unbelievable posts I have ever read on these boards.

I think I'm hallucinating reading this too...

I bought a piece of his collection 1 year and half ago, and so took some time, aside, to talk with him, by email, about his restoration works.

Nice guy, and a very helpfull guy to make the transaction happening, too (I'm located overseas)

    I think I'm hallucinating...

Ol' Theo is tempting anyone with $150k to put up for a week or so for kicks to cost him thousands and teach him a lesson :)

I don't know what is currently the most ridiculous coming from him : this or the bad photo-novel he is doing with JR SR's picture (and bad paste-up) on the Spectacular SM 259 page...

Yup. I just want to be clear, I just can’t imagine Albert not saying anything about it being a recreation, so how did that message not get through to Cates? Like you say, I’m giving a generous amount of benefit of the doubt that there was an honest communication breakdown here.

We can also imagine the situation where the two didn't communicate...

If Cates see the art, think it's the bargain of his life, give the money right away in ten seconds to Albert, would Albert necessarily say "I must warn you it's a recreation" ? (it's an open question)

I would have ignored this seller, as anyone scanning his other stuff (shipping is only $10 worldwide from Poland!) would see all the other fakes by the usual suspects, but in addition to his other fake Kirbys, here's smiley-face Galactus, copied not from (I think) Kirby but Byrne (maybe?). He's kind of adorable. Look at his sheepish lil' smile! Aw, he's not so bad, he's just misunderstood.

Good eyes. That is definitely a ripe from Byrne's entry in OHOTMU :

    ohotmu-galactus1.jpg

Let's say the guy told himself : "Maybe if he smiles, it will sell quicker"

    This looks promising...

Can't wait to see the Nova version of the guy :

    (Just kidding...)

I wasn't there, but yes, my understanding is that is exactly how Albert was offering it - as a recreation and priced as such.

    Thanks.

It would make sense. I saw on the pics in the previous post he was displaying at least one other painted recreation of another original cover.

  9. To lighten the topic a little bit, I can't decide which one of these current Ebay entries is the funniest :

    - this obscure piece of work, maybe the new "Salvator Mundi" :

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/294378276117?hash=item448a500515%3Ag%3ADx8AAOSwo8RhGZUJ&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5338181027&customid=958&toolid=10049

    - ... or this flip (?) attempt, where you don't know what you're really buying :

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/234175951669?hash=item3685f97335%3Ag%3AQ5sAAOSwwRdhNh0p&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5338181027&customid=958&toolid=10049

An original art piece, a poster, a production art piece, a babe, a funhouse antique, 3 Marvel Masterworks or a sailor cap (including the sailor ?) ?

Even on these, inflated prices are here.

  10. I'm a small collector so I don't have many pages, and so not many portfolios. To deal with the differents formats that I already encountered (70's, 80's, oversized, modern or even sometimes totally homemade by the artist - Art Adams - that break all standards) - a situation which can soon become a nightmare - , I took the radical decision that you don't want to consider :

    - A2 format art porfolios for pages

    - A3 format art portfolios for sketches

My porfolios have black sheets inside, so, as a result, the presentation is excellent in my opinion, as if the pages were framed by the remaining / surrounding black area.

I'm probably in a minority here, but this way, the disparities in what you buy and then store are totally levered and the "too tight" situation (when pages render unevenly in a portfolio) disappears too.

I got used to manipulate them, and handling the A2 ones has its style (it impresses friends every time, for a few seconds, as if I was taking out a Ferrari of my garage )

Wow, I hadn't noticed that - good eye!

Well, Glen, if I had such a good eye, I wouldn't have doubts on some... :flamed:

The "Mignola"'s, "JR JR"'s, ... no problem, but I don't know what to think about the "Cooke"'s. Not enough familiar with the late Darwyn to see the evidence jumping to my face...

A funny side note is the "Larson". As if the typo was an convenient excuse for this item, beeing the worst of the lot (and as if the guy was telling himself that no effort would be lost this way, pairing it with a deformed - O.o - Spider-Man just to be sure of his shot anyway).

Here’s a piece if your name is Tom, just $14, what a deal... 😂

Many of the others sketches he already sold seems to be forgeries IMHO, but I would be glad to hear what you think of them...

    https://www.ebay.com/sch/Books-Magazines/267/m.html?item=224583343112&toolid=10001&campid=5338116315&customid=CGCForum&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&hash=item344a35dc08%3Ag%3AA7MAAOSwHJphI7Cs&LH_Complete=1&_ssn=davidgoldingart&_sac=1

It's me, or many of them seems to have been done... with the same pen ?

  13. It is what I thought too, but since I found just a few minutes ago the original ad for the lot of sketches, I'm a bit confused now seeing the others sketches...

    https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/three-marker-drawings-on-paper-joe-kubert-80-c-3c141bd8dd

I'm not sure we are necessarily in presence of fakes here (there are elements that point to JK style - and the ad mentions autographed programs from the JK school - but they could be forgeries), only very crude drawings which seem to have been done in ten seconds by him for students in practice sessions, in order to teach them something or show them something (like an idea) very quickly.

It would be interresting to know, from old students of the school, if JK usually did that kind of sketches in small group practice sessions. I'm more familiar with more refine teaching material from his hand, but...
