It's all in what you're looking for. A quick sketch, like a signature or a selfie, is basically evidence that you shared space with the artist. It's rarely going to be an objectively beautiful piece of art, compared to something the artist put time into as he would for a published cover. Most artists do this implicitly, pricing their "done at the convention" work much lower than their "spent a while in the studio" work. I appreciated Jon Bogdanove for explicitly including two price scales on his commission sheet when I saw him a couple of months ago. Some people want to pay more for a piece that's not only by the artist of their choice, but also at a quality level that shows off the artist at his best rather than his quickest. Neither is wrong.

I have bought in the past, at a con, a sketch done by Bob Layton prior to this con. A chance I was first in line in front of the portfolio, because a lady who was behind me, seeing the sketch I was buying, asked B.L. for the same sketch. I saw it later, on the B.L. twitter feed, and I was happy to have bought mine, because the quality level of hers was not the same, as professional as B.L. is (and quick he is) on a con.

  2. The curiosity of the week :

I don't see why Alex Toth would have bothered to color a blantant (printed !!!) rip-off of a Byrne sketch (and change his signature)... but the mighty COA is always right !

Original sketch coming from "The Art of John Byrne" art book :

I pretty much don’t collect much interior art published after the mid 90s. Unless the page is a great design or can tell the story without the word balloons I won’t buy it. I prefer pages with word balloons, I like to collect pages which are part of stories I like. Pages seem generic without word balloons.

Guess the young OA collectors, or the ones from the coming generation, will probably see things differently (especially with the prices for old OA going where there are going), but we cannot change ourselves and what we like...

I have several "silent" pages (that's what I call them) from the last two decades and each of them have "a great design or can tell the story without the word balloons", so I completely agree.

I collect (mostly) 90's era art - but for me, one of the make-or-break deals is if the page is missing it's lettering.

I'm in the same situation. Without letters on modern pages, to me, something is missing. It's really difficult for me to choose and immerse into modern pages the same way than in the pages from before.

I'm glad to have a least one sample of work by the old masters (Workman, Klein and Orzechowski) in my collection.

  5. Since many years, David Lloyd has graced the fans with sketches of his most famous creation, with Alan Moore, V.
In the middle of the hundred of V head sketches visible on CAF, some really unique and great Lloyd sketches can be seen. Here is one !

This sketch was done at the UKCAC 1992 in London. It comes from a personal art book. The source will be indicated to the buyer.
Perfect condition, but the original tiny straight marks of the internal border of the art book, at the extreme left of the drawing, are of note.

Humor sketches don't fit in my OA collection, so grab this one while you can.

Price : 50$ including tracked & insured postage
PayPal with "Friend and Family" option (or add the PP fees) due same day as claiming below “I’ll take it.”

  6. Mad Hatter sketch drawn by John Bolton.

John Bolton did a few like this at conventions in the early 90s. See

It sits, lonely and forlorn, in Itoyas waiting patiently for the day that a 1 in 10,000 customer steps forward and thinks “Gee, I gotta have that John Byrne Next Men page”

Jim Warden generally put the right prices on them... so he sells a lot of them !

Buyers who see a stale piece dropping in ask price should snap it up, but they don't seem to, in practice.

Ahem... Maybe you're right... however for my last purchase, I waited three months for a discount to arrive to buy the piece, which was clearly not an A-piece !

Guess I am an exception... (or maybe tight-fisted, even for second choice pieces !)

Interestingly, the least interesting page of the original lot is not for sale. Maybe the seller kept it to himself ?
