  1. To join this conversation a little late, I think it will ultimately be for the best. There will undoubtedly be some dumpster fires, especially right away, but in the long run, I believe they will be more than balanced out by innovative and passionate projects. Batman and Superman have earned their place in the pantheon of public domain cultural icons like Dracula and Sherlock Holmes. It will be interesting to see how Marvel/Image/etc. take advantage of this opportunity, if at all.

I'm much more excited about everything else from DC's GA that will join Batman and Superman around the same time. DC seems content to let that material be lost to time; once it's public domain, somebody might actually make a good omnibus/collected set for runs like All-American, Comic Cavalcade, and Adventure.

  2. We had a lot of fun this year. I only picked up a few comics and prints, as we've just paid off some OA. This is only my second time at SDCC, but I felt like the comics section was larger/easier to navigate than last year. Meanwhile, doing anything in artist alley was a struggle thanks to the Funko congestion.

As for why everyone isn't here, to be brutally frank, I've heard it said by many people: a lot of people just don't like the personalities here. Whether people agree or not, there's a perception out there that this Forum is dominated by keyboard warriors who will attack you and try to tear you down (Burkey I know has felt attacked here in the past, and he definitely was) and/or who are talking out of their azz and think they know more than they do (I'm sure some have leveled this criticism against me on occasion, though, I know that it's mostly directly at others here).

I think this is undoubtedly a factor. It does feel like I've seen people make a bad/unpopular post on here and subsequently get shredded into oblivion. It's one of the reasons I lurked so long on here myself before actually making an account.

Overall, though, these boards still represent the best online repository of knowledge for OA/Comics, imo. I find the FB groups to be a much more unpleasant mix of newbies posting questions that can be answered with <5 minutes on Google, spec/flip discussion, or repeat posts about the same news competing for the most likes. I don't feel like I learn anything in those FB groups; meanwhile, I can read through any archived or active thread on here and learn something new. I also like IG, as I've had an easy time connecting to artists on there and can scroll mindlessly while looking at pretty pictures.

  4. Hello all. Today I have a few more 9.8 slabs, mostly Coffin books but also two Parrillo virgin covers. My Kudos thread is linked in my profile in case we haven't met. Here are the rules:

    • No PL/HOS buyers.
    • Accepted payment methods are PayPal, Zelle, or Check.
    • Payment is expected within 72 hours. If you want a longer period to pay/a payment plan, PM me first.
    • 1st :takeit:in the thread gets priority. Timestamp will break ties.
    • Buyer pays shipping. US shipping capped at $15. I can ship international, but it might get expensive.
    • No returns on graded books.
    • Happy to hear reasonable offers.
    • If there are any questions about the books, let me know.

These books are available until Monday at midnight.

  5. There are a lot of indie runs that are popular right now that I don't know much about. I've seen Fables mentioned, which is an enjoyable non-superhero read. Cullen Bunn has done some great supernatural/horror series in recent years. Specifically, Harrow County is great, with really interesting art if you're looking for a slightly longer series. At the same time, Bone Parish is a good but short 12-issue series I read recently as a recommendation from my LCS.

My other personal recommendation for something that isn't Marvel/DC is the Mignolaverse (Hellboy/BPRD). It's probably my favorite comic universe of all time. The storytelling is strong, the characters are interesting, and the art is solid throughout if you're into Mignola's style. There's been a lot published. This reading order makes it pretty straightforward if you're interested: http://www.multiversitycomics.com/annotations/hellboy-reading-order-2021/.

Baltimore is also good from Mignola if you like the style/themes but aren't into specifically Hellboy.
