  1. Wow!! The art appeared in Feature Funnies 1 with the quarterpanel being cut and pasted from Bailey in Wow 4 to an interior page of Feature Funnies.....
  2. given that most all agree the silver age began late 55 or early 56, golden age ends where silver age beings (unless you subscribe to the atom age ) Death of the GA I take a different spin as to the "death" of the GA. This is part of an article I did for CBM on multiple origins of Timely characters. I will copy up here that my view is the GA died along with Professor Horton (creator of the Torch) in that cold day in 1949. This is symbolic and meant to be a more poetic view of this time period. It is not meant to spur an academic debate but reflect on a symbolic era..... While this flies in the face of conventional wisdom, this end day works for me to be followed by the "Dark Age" of comics in the early 50s.....etc etc MARVEL MYSTERY 92 ...... The Torch has not seen Professor Horton for ten years. (This absence of a visit for so long makes sense in view of the ending of the original account. ....... Coming to the home of his creator as Horton lies on his deathbed, the Torch reminisces over his creation.... In this retelling, fellow scientists are first called to his home to view the Torch and see if they can help Horton control the flame. Seeing Horton’s creation as a menace to civilization, they release the story to the papers, portraying Horton as insane. Resenting this characterization, Horton invites members of the press to see the Torch. (This reverses the order of the original story). They too see the Torch as a threat. Spurned by the press, Horton works day and night on a solution to solve the flaming problem. Finally after months of failure, Horton collapses from exhaustion. Horton is convinced by his doctor to rest and give up on his quest. Admitting his failure, Horton encases the Torch in a pool of concrete. As in the original tale, the Torch is released by an apparent leak of air on August 10, 1940. The story then follows the original until the Torch returns after causing chaos in the city. In the updated version, he returns to a pool at the home of Professor Horton. ............. Returning to the present, the Torch is there as Horton is belatedly recognized by the scientific community for his contribution to science. Mere hours later, on December 28, 1948, as the Torch looks on, Horton dies. ....... Although the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner briefly resurfaced in the mid 1950s, Sub-Mariner Comics 32 and Marvel Mystery 92, both covered dated June 1949 signalled the end of the golden age for Timely Comics. With lead time necessary for writing and drawing issues and placing them on the newsstands well in advance of the cover date, in a real sense, the Timely golden age symbolically died along with Professor Horton on that cold December day. Sorry if this got too esoteric for the masses.....jb But there lies some truth in there
  3. the top one is Church....the bottom ones Science is Larson and Wonderworlds are Church and Larson there are several for the Fine covers......jb Neve get tired looking at them.......
  4. My favorite ugliest cover of the GA.....nah......the plain ugliest. Period. significant book, however,......
  5. thruthfully that is a partial fear of mine...yes, as comic book fans of the publisher, we like to see the positive exposure...but as collectors of the publisher, relative to the seemingly almost non existent supply, I fear new competition At some point not too long ago, you WERE the new competition! indeed...it was jb's thread that got me hooked...then I went to Win's house in Chicago in 2007? and the frenzy began...but, a mere 2 years later, I "gave" up and sold off...only to have Boot reignite my desire in 2013...last 2 years have again, been a frenzy... due to a few gracious boardies, I will be picking up 3 more issues I need over next 2 weeks...a FP 3/7, a KDF 11 and a FP 41.... getting close on the hero titles...and another buddy will have a star 2 and a couple little giant funnies I need. where I am missing a LOT of issues are the Star And Star Rangers......tough I recall that big stack of Centaurs you got from Boot a couple of years ago. I enjoyed flipping through them the brief time they were at my place in Philly
  6. These Wonderworlds were here and gone in a heartbeat!! Congrats on the quick sale my friend thats awesome!! (thumbs u Thanks Gino! I let 'em go 'cause I knew it'd be too tough to add any more. These show I am greedy, love Larsons but how about those Foxes
  7. it sure is one helluva cool funny-book. good for you, young man. Patenaude did some great end of run covers before Holyoke stepped in for a bit while Fox played with bankruptcy
  8. Wonderful stuff gator!! that's a trifecta!! not seen often........
  9. As many of you know, I have a passion for tracking down GA artists (many long gone) and have commissions done. Done by Filchock at 95, I had him remove the word balloons. Some of the earliest of the GA. Tough part was to find him. (NO PROBLEM AGREEING TO DO IT. HE WAS PYCHED.
  10. To quote a phrase from Rich...you guys sure get "purty" books. Just stunning stuff guys.......jb
  11. I agree that there are a nice spectrum of artist on the early Blue Beetle.......I love the Edd Ash cover recreation which drove me to pick up the Church copy of this issue
  12. Couple of Church copies. The cover recreation is Murphy Anderson who did a "fantastic" job on this "weird" book.....which is one of the best Wonderworlds to display a bunch of mysterymen..... how about ghoul drool?.....No body does it better that Fine..........
  13. I got my copy too. Was trying to find the op to thank him. Adamstrange is also acknowledged Buried i think is an email contact number.....
  14. I get requests from time to time to copy stuff like covers. How about this courtesy copy from a German author who wrote on Centaur [Mystery] Comics (in German of course) including covers and scans of interior pages. All the interior pages were changed from English to German Heck 50% of the GA world does not know what Centaurs are and their importance and this guy distributes a book in German on the art and the artists........Whoa....It is well produced (but my German is rusty)
  15. Could you post the list please? I was curious as to which 10 MLJ comics Heritage considered the rarest myself (Note: They did qualify the list with a maybe). Here's a direct link with the covers represented: http://comics.ha.com/c/newsletter.zx?frame=no&id=4515#collector-c GREAT covers all.......great images to share. I did not know that Heritage promoted the 21 but finished with the Hangman 8 as to scarcity..... The recreation I had Fujitani do for me.....many moons ago Cool recreation (and is that copy your # 8?) Doesn't hurt that the Blue Ribbon 21 they featured in the article was courtesy of your incredible collection too Mr. Berk. Frankly as many can attest, I ain't no "Mister". As to having the book in the list which I did not note until yesterday, even a blind squirrel can find a nut. Please note that I do not have any of the books that I do not have (!).......I am just an old geek like you guys that enjoys the bright colors.....jb oh the Hangman 8 is mine.....
