  1. these artists abandoned the realism thats (often) demanded of them by the public that cannot draw. We've had photography for almost 200 years. Fertile minds have ben seeking others ways of seeing in that time. As well as hucksters trying to make a buck.
  2. heres how he got to his late popular style: from drawing and painting tree branches. methodically reducing the clutter to square spaces of color and lines.
  3. great retorts... and also, Picasso was a brilliant "realistic painter" when young, and when he changed as he grew, became the poster child for artists who cant draw. (even though his early Blue period works were revered. Another saying in art schools was that had he died at 30 he would have been even MORE greatly admired. I haven't see any examples (mainly because Im not an art historian) but Id wager that Lichtenstein (like Mondrian whose early work I have seen) was actually a pretty impressive draughtsman (realistically speaking) before he embarked on his quest to be a hack and forger of funny book images. His journey took him from being a pretty talented artist who painted some nice stuff, to an historic artist who will be remembered for centuries. Well one or two maybe.
  4. for instance, take Spidey 361-- you can pretty much use the GPA data like a DJI stock table. These sales happen so often in high grades the averages form a graph that shows the direction its value is going and where its been. If its going up, ask for more. Going down it will be a tougher sell.
  5. if the book has 20 or more sales in the past year, use the average.. and study the prices to see of the most current sale is riding a trend upward, or downward. If the book is older and/or scarcer use the latest price as a guide, but not the definitive value for your copy or any other copy in grade. Thats the best you can do with a one off sale price. GPA doesn't have access to ALL SALES EVERYWHERE. Therefore issues with many sales (Silver, Bronze and modern keys particularly and with increasing confidence in the more recent Ages) are the closest to a "current value" you can get in our young hobby. And if you are looking at 9.0 and theres just a few sales, but 8.5 and 9.2 have lots of RECENT sales, pick a number between the two averages for 8.5 and 9.2.
  6. Many ways to describe page count… it can be confusing. 32 pages of story and ads. 8 sheets of paper stapled together, each with 4 pages of story or ads. = 32 8 pages before and after the staples, each with a front and a back of story or ads. = 32 … each count also has 4 cover pages. Total 32 plus 4 cover pages.
  7. Absolutely. however…. When you think an out it…. Which do you think takes bigger belles? Lol all part of the progression. Things get old and new ideas come into play. In the seventies, painting was considered dead. It had all been done was espoused in art schools. That’s when this kind of performance art began getting traction. Think Blockchain currencies (trying to) supplant old monies. There will be well heeled adherents for every new crazy thing people can try to get in on early and make a buck on
  8. It’s ALL different now. Why hang Lichtenstein for it. By the time he was born, it was what it is already, no?
  9. Well, the growth of civilization has caused a lot of changes. No longer do we all toil all day for bread. Artists painted to eat, same as laborers labored to eat. The vanity or piety of the rich caused all art to be commissioned back then. In 700 years, A leisure class developed beyond the monarch’s who were the art patrons back then. People who had the riches to buy art.. but art painted or sculpted by poor artists promoted by art dealers in hopes of becoming as rich as the moneyed classes. You can’t compare then to now so easily.
  10. we comic collectors are few... He was speaking to the elite art buying/loving crowd. To them comics were quaint child things, but now, so zuchmore in their eyes. Back then we comes people were a joke. Stan Lee used to say he was embarrassed to tell people at parties on Long Island (who had big jobs in the NYC) what he did for a living. This was the time Lichtenstein was creating these canvases. as for "pretense", sure he wanted a hook to make it big. (He wasn't an Alan Moore type for whom creating WAS the reward)
  11. one comment and Ill stop repeating myself. ART is not measured by how "well drawn" it is. His aim was NOT to paint the comic panels "better", just draw attention to them by size and style and seeing them in a gallery as ART not throwaway (BETTER DRAWN or not) objects of mass culture and consumerism.
  12. of course it is. Its absolutely his responsibility and ability to control any and all aspects of the Marvel Films. If he was unhappy with a scene they'd reshoot after seeing dailies Sounds like you didnt like the way the character was written and are blaming her.... for "disrespecting" the character? But Just cause I dont get it is fine, lots of people agree with you.
  13. They are, aren’t they though? Guys, In the end Marvel and Kevin Feige chose the portrayal of the Captain Marvel film character, just as they control the whole MCU. They have been so successful they are on their own. So blame Feige if the character isn’t what YOU expected. They wrote it, shot it, edited dialogue, edited it and the film is exactly what they wanted. If they saw the film the way you did, and that Brie mailed it in, or was high handed about it, they would have kept shooting until they had what they wanted. But they already did.
  14. sorry guys. I was repeating what Id read here... but cant remember the specifics of the other competing issues that used to be or are now the first appearance. I think the souring was centered on whether the "Carol Danvers without powers" was ultimately not enough to warrant first appearance status? and, jeez Im a guy, soI cant figure out why do so many guys hate Brie Larson? Or are you all surrounded by bodaciousness in your lives! : ) and she's a great actress and was an (Academy Best Actress Winner) casting coup for Marvel.
  15. 13 dropped because people soured on it being a true first appearance. The money went elsewhere is all
  16. I just looked at your top comics list again. Heres a few points to consider, though Im sure you aren't motivated to revise it again so soon. (I dont blame you). Basically, in this current climate, I dont agree with you valuing different copies in the same grade at very different prices. Buyers at these levels are buying by grade more than the other aspects like what it sold for last time. When its up for sale again, it's a completely new ballgame. For instance, you have the AF15 that just sold for 3.6M at the same 3.6. But you have the other 9.6s down at 3M because you state that you dont know that the others would reach 3.6. Well here's the thing, that also means that the copy that sold wouldn't go for 3.6 again either! Its not noticeably better, or even a pedigree or has the best page quality. It sold for 3.6 because it was the first 9.6 available in a decade. So either make them all 3.6 or go bold and lower it to 3.0, same as the others. I agree with you that theres a good chance this sale was an outlier, especially if resold soon, So they are all the same for now until we have more sales data. There are other issues listed (or not) in the same grade, but you have a higher value to one and not its brothers. Like Superman 1, and Action 1 in grades 7.5 and 8.0, and FF1 doesn't even list the other 9.6. And, I also think you need to put your values at the top of each section, up with the title, issue# and grade, not at the bottom of each listing. I get that you want us to read through and then have a big "gender reveal" moment... but scrolling up and down I often cant find the values. And, they are followed immediately by the NEXT book's title and Issue. more confusion.. just some thoughts to consider.
  17. I don't think it will top the 3.6M But it might. its currently 4th best copy and seems like there are a couple better raw out there (not counting dentist copy. Ive already counted that making this the 7.0 the 4th best) In this market it seems the new money has their own ideas about censuses and what is a book to chase down doggedly. If 2 people besides CC really really REALLY want it, we get a fireworks show (and CC regains top price ever paid... theres that in the mix too)
  18. That’s what I thought. Seeing her as a young woman but 5 minutes later a full on street smart ninja fighter felt wha? If this were a comic though it would be believable though. We’ve read these stories all our lives! as film though, she comes across as innocent In s comic it’s easier to accept secret super human skills from a character you just met a few pages ago
  19. I say split them. But only if there’s a hard rule on labeling correctly. And a firm cut off point. Just pick a year. Doesn’t have to be the 100% agreed year. So we don’t have an atomic age or EC age battle. Just pick a year and people post their books accordingly.
  20. youre right. this is only a 6.0 and the AF15 was highest graded. big difference in bidder excitement and confidence when going after a top graded copy of a key. We just dont know how to read the minds of these buyers we dont know. None of us are bidding right? We missed the chance when the prices were high but so much less than now.
  21. The sale of the 8.5 happened long before so many game changing events. Back then Action ! Was far and away the big big… but even so, back then 2.5 and 3.2 were considered by us all as as high as anyone on the planet would ever pay for a comic. Then covid made everyone stay home, get bored and start buying stuff they had no time to get worked up into buying when they were commuting, or had jobs! and there was lots of cash around too… and crypto. now these books are hitting a market after a silver age book sold for 3.6! And Promise books set records for lots of titles and issues… and genres. So, let’s see what these books sell for. Then we can decide if SA has caught GA, or whether AF15 pushed Act and Tec to new heights
