    Hi guys

I don't want this thread to turn into a CGC bashing thread but felt it was important to start this thread.

Sent 7 books to CGC and when I was inspected the books noticed that one had 2 rips on the bottom of the back cover.  I noticed that the case had what I would call a spacer at the bottom to prevent the book from moving in the case but it wasn't doing it's job and the book could slide about an inch up and down.  As I tilted the case I could see the book slide and snag on the spacer and the two rips were located where the book bumped against the spacer.  I have no doubt that if I shook the book hard the rips would have got bigger.  I also looked at every CGC case in my collection that had a spacer and none of them could move in the case.

Grader notes indicated rips on cover but not where and not size.  I sent the book back for review and CGC pressed it, graded it and sent it back to me.

Book was originally graded 4.0 and 4.0 the second time so I'm not sure I can argue any loss of value.  Because I did not scan the back cover before submission, something I will do for any book submitted in the future, I can't prove the book was actually damaged by the case but as I told the CGC rep "I don't know how anyone could look at these pictures and not agree that the case damaged my book"

The damage is easier to see on the left side but there's a very similar rip on the right side.

I’m getting here a little bit late but this happened to a book I have also. They wouldn’t even regrade and Reslab free of charge. RIP customer service

Hi guys, I'm an Italian comic enthusiast new to the game of CGCs, and today my first one has arrived me at home, bought from another Italian guy on Ebay.

It's a Daredevil 183 9.4, beautiful classic book and amazing cover BUT... I have noticed some suspect details....

    1) the most triggering one: as you can see in the picture, on the right side of the slabs there's a thin slit, as the case has been opened from that side. If I pull i can really open it and I thin it shouldn't be like this !

    2) the 9.4 is really shady, like grey colored, absolutely not black. Don't know if its normal, maybe some "older" generation slabs/labels were like this.

    3) as you can see in the picture the litte label on the top of the slab it's like a sticker, it doesn't come from the inside big label (sorry if my explanation is bad, my english is far from perfect, anyway you should be able to understand what I mean from the pics)

4)one of the corner has some minor flaws, like very little damages. I admit that this may be had been caused by a fall, but I don't know...

In the end do you thin I've been scammed ? Seems strange to me that the Italian guy has tried to fool me, doesn't seemed like an expert in the field, maybe he has bought it from Ebay already counterfeited (anyway I'm sure he noticed that the case was a little bit "open").

I'm of two minds when looking at the staggering run-up in prices over the past few months. On the one hand, I own some top keys (Bronze Age, anyway) and I'm thrilled to see them climbing to brain-bending heights right now. On the other hand, I have a lot more books to purchase before I'm done and the doubling and trebling of prices across the board seems like nothing less than mass insanity.

I have built up a war chest that would make me feel flush in any other year, and normally I would be working on buying a big book right about now. However, after thinking about it over the past month. I'm putting myself on the sidelines. Even though I could still afford some of these big books at the going rate, I frankly don't want to do anything to "normalize" these prices. So, I'm going to climb out of the pool and do my small part to reduce the Demand side of the equation by at least one.

Could I end up regretting it? Sure. If that Hulk 180 I was looking at goes from $10,000 in 2020 to $30,000 in 2121 to $60,000 in 2022, then I will have missed the boat. However, at that point, this will likely be a hobby I can no longer afford anyway, at least not the way I have enjoyed it in the past.

So, what about the rest of you? Are you swimming with the sharks or eating popcorn on the sidelines?

I’m a firm believer in normalizing. I think I’ll sell my slabs to the middle class for roughly fmv and they can sell them to the elites. Everybody wins! Comics aren’t my bread and butter anyhow. But yeah I’m not buying slabs that’s for darn sure. I will buy raw books and send em as long as they don’t climb to slab prices(which I see happening) I’ll take mine with light butter 🍿

    I just looked this up.

Iron Man 1 is about 50-60% more expensive these days than 55 in 8.0, 9,0, and 9.4.

    I'd add Wolverine (1988) - # 35 is still megabucks (9.8 only).

West Coast Avengers - # 45 is still ridiculus.

I feel like they can bring the 9.6 up a few dollars I mean come on!!! Just like #23 it’s 9.8 or bust

    9.2 at best....but I don’t work for CGC.

Make sure you post pics of graded slabs when you get them back.  That way we can verify how smart we are. 🤪🤪🤪

You know I will! I look at this book in person and I just can’t see it in the 8s at all. But that’s my amateur opinion

No worries Joe, good luck. Some books are annoying like that - 98% near mint plus and 2% fine minus. It's working out the overall grade in the middle that's the hard bit.

Gotcha. It’s going modern no fast track so I’ll forget all about it and how it was put up for sale as a NM with no photos of the spine. You can’t even tell in the picture! Arrggg! It’s so tough to find these books at shops. it’s like a box of beaters or you roll the dice online. Thanks for your input much appreciated

Well, it's subjective, grading, as we know, and I tend to be harsh, so if I was putting that up for sale on eBay myself I'd likely call it a VFN at best. The creases are magnified by the black edge which pushes me away from grading it as a NM of any description (9.0, 9.2 etc). It's difficult without having the book in hand of course - every one of those ticks likely means the book was folder at some point to create them but it may be better or worse in hand. Photos never do it justice.

I'm sure others will chime in at some point but I'm as confident as I can be that CGC would not give that a 9.4, if that was your hope. Always a nice book to own though, a Hobby Gobby.

Agree👍. It was. I was reaching a little it’s probably enough to keep it out of NM territory because well it’s not NM. It’s a very sharp book though it has a lot of saving grace from the front eye appeal so overall I was hoping for one. I would take a 9.2 all day. We’ll see I’m sending it. Thanks
