Set of three -- Wolverine 151 - 153, all 9.8 blue with white pages.  Don't forget, there's also a 150 listed if you want to complete the whole storyline at once.

$100 shipped together (I will consider separating them, but not for $33.33 apiece).

    Honestly, for pure investment sake, I'd get # 1 in 9.6 (x 3) for $900 (if you're patient) or $1,000 total (if you're not).

Because over time, the 9.6 : 9.8 price ratio will close up again.

It's common in both grades. I can't see justifying a 3.5x or 4.0x multiple for 9.8 over 9.6 when there are 30 copies above 9.8 out there already.

That's a good point current GCG grading might not be as important years down the line just the quality of the book and right now the difference between some 9.6 and a 9.8 could be how good or bad a mood the grader was when he went graded it. Now I know there are guidelines they follow for grading  but we are all only human at the end of the day and if the difference is minute then the mood of the grader could come into play also.

Lay out the research you’ve done into the pricing histories of your choices.  List your pro’s and cons of why you would choose one over the other, whether they’re financial or personal.

people have generously given lots of great and occasionally conflicting advice, but they’re not magicians and fortune tellers, and their time and experience and wisdom has actual financial value and was gained over years with passion and experience.

my point is, do some of the work yourself to help others help you.

Good points there let me answer.

"Lay out the research you’ve done into the pricing histories of your choices."

I've looked at sites like comics.gocollect.com to see what the current value of the books are but having checked a few other key titles it seems to show less value than what is actually being sold now so I guess that site is a little out of date with it's prices. I've looked at ebay prices over the last few months and compared then to other auction sites and the prices seem to be the same so unless a graded copy pops up here then it looks like I'll be buying on ebay

"List your pro’s and cons of why you would choose one over the other, whether they’re financial or personal."

They are both financial and personal. As I said my kids can sell it off after I die and I want them to be able to get the most money so I'm trying to figure out if in 40 years will more people have a run of 1-4 with a grade like 9.6 or just have a high grade 1 at 9.8. As for personal I want something in my collection that years from now I can look at and say not many people would be able to get/Afford this and I don't know if that would be a copy of 1 at 9.8 or a run of 1-4 at 9.6.

Are you simply number-chasing? The difference in grade between 9.8 and 9.6 is smaller than the difference in price.

I know quality difference is very small but this is something I plan on putting on display for the next 30 years and then when I die the kids can sell it off for whatever it is worth then. 30 40 years from now I'd imagine a 9.8 would be a nice little nest egg for them.

Why would anyone ever sell those books on ebay? Plenty of other avenues to sell these days to avoid ebay. Only thing ebay is decent for is buying and even that is harder now with prices. You want deals and to maximize sales, there are plenty of other platforms that have emerged as better options.

Other than here what other sites would be a good place to look?

Are you buying the book or the grade? Sounds like you care more about the 9.8

Will it go down? Time will tell...one would think this collectibles boom will have to peak and dip at some point, as things do, especially if economies crash a bit in the next couple years. Tis the way. Nothing really rises and gains and grows steadily forever without experiencing some dips and doodles.

Suggestion? At that price, be patient and secure yourself 5-10 raw copies you think are worthy of the 9.8. This book had a HUGE print run (15 years ago I would find collections with dozens of copies) so chances are you can get your own 9.8 with a little bit of patience and work and, if you grade all the raws and sell the ones you get back that are not 9.8, you might even turn a profit or cover your costs!

But nah....why do that when I can click, pay, ship, get.

If I was going to get a non graded version what would be the best way to go about it. I live in Ireland so you will never see them pop up in real life so online would be my only option. Would it be possible to tell the difference between a 9.6 and a 9.8 from pictures alone?

Edit: As an example there is this listing where the seller is saying its a 9.8/9.9 grade but it looks bent in the middle so I highly doubt it would be that grade. Would this be a 9.6 or can you not tell from the pictures?

I certainly would not buy this book now. This book reeks of one that will sell for whatever craziness it does not but once the market becomes flooded (and it will) and the economy dips (meaning collectibles take a hit too), this will fall back to a more reasonable amount.

Is there any reason it is going for so much now. There hasn't been a wolverine film for a few years now and it doesn't look like there will be one for a while yet.

  8. I'm looking at the prices online and they seem to have jumped to crazy levels even from the prices they were a few months ago. The best price I have seen so far for a graded 9.8 white pages is $1200. Is this the worst time to buy or will I be even looking at paying way more in the next year or two. This is something I plan to keep for good so if I have to wait a year or two till the market settles I would be willing to do that but then the last thing I want to happen is to have to buy one for about 10 grand next year or the year after that.

    1. Supply and demand dictate "a price that is fair". Nothing else matters.
    2. What exactly are you looking for? First appearance? First cover appearance? First self-titled issue?

After spending the weekend looking at the sell forum and watching all the rare books that have gone up for sale and in some cases sold within a minute I think I know about ten time more now than when I joined this forum Friday. I've seen a few x-men 12 issues go for sale over the weekend that I would have claimed if my wire transfer from Apple shares had cleared. I'll probably have to wait until Wednesday for that. I did pick up some spiderman and fantastic fours ungraded over the weekend so what I think I might do is rather than spending a couple of grand on a book I'll keep an eye out here and pick up a few titles every now and again. I might still try to start off with a 9.6 Wolverine 1 but ya I have a bad feeling I've just become addicted to a new and expensive hobby lol.

Who are your favorite characters (I see you mentioned Wolverine)? Do you have any nostalgic memories of comics you read as a kid? Is there a character or title that you share a fond memory of with a loved one (your dad/friend/whomever loved Batman and turned you on to comics for example)? If you don't care about resale value but want a cool collectible, I'd target something that has meaning to you in some form. I can understand wanting a high-value comic as a showpiece, as opposed to an "investment," but it'll mean a lot more to you if there's an emotional tie.

It sounds weird, but hear me out - it's almost like getting a tattoo; if you want to spend a grand or two - which is serious money to many people - and you don't plan on cashing out on it anytime soon, you want it to be something memorable and meaningful. There should be a story behind it about the "why" that made you drop a couple grand on a comic - an emotional tie will make it that much more special.

My favorite character would be wolverine so I'd guess hulk 181 would be at the top of my list but getting a graded copy would be well over 2k. I also like the modern classics like walking dead, invincible and preacher. I'm also looking out for non graded comics from the 1940's. My family originally come from the US so I have a lot of extended relatives that live in the US. My Dads aunt used to send the latest comic books to him when he was a child. As the only kid that got the latest comics from the US he was a very popular child in school lol. They had this weird system where they would write their name down on the back of the comic and whoever was next on the list would be the next to take it home and read it.  He really believes that he had the very 1st batman issue but at 83 he would have only been about 2 when that came out so I doubt his aunt would have been sending comics to him at that age but a lot of the comics he was sent back then probably would be worth a pretty penny if he still had them today minus the list of names on the last page lol. Anyway I know he doesn't have many years left on this earth so I would love to surprise him with a comic he might have had as a kid. He was into batman obviously but he loved the weekly serials like flash gordon  the lone ranger and so on.

Hmm, idk much about the Irish comic market but there are some general tricks when it comes to deal hunting. I'm Canadian and I find one of the biggest struggles is the shipping cost and import charges. When you're on Ebay, play with the settings, set the region to only your area, watch the buy it nows as well as the auctions. Auctions happening in your area could be a steal since you would save on the shipping compared to other bidders.

Check with local comic shops, see what they have raw, bin hunting takes dedication but if you know what to look for it pays off.

    I'd also check this site:

    https://www.cgccomics.com/services/DealerListing.aspx?state=ireland

It shows there's one certified CGC dealer in Dublin, contact that shop, see what kinda slabs they have for sale. Since they're a dealer, it means they can submit raw comics to be graded on your behalf, so if you have any luck with your bin hunting or you find a nice book on ebay raw, you can send it through them to be slabbed. Of course they'd charge you a slight premium, may still be a better deal than buying already slabbed comics.

Hope this helps and welcome to the boards!

Thanks for the advice. That's really helpful. What's your opinion on buying comics here? After posting this thread I saw there is a sell section here and the prices seem better than ebay.

  12. I have a small collection of a few hundred comics that I have collected over the years non graded. None of them are rare. The one that is probably valued the most is a wolverine #75. If it was graded it might be a 9.2 so probably worth $30. I've always wanted something rare and CGC rated. Living in Ireland there are very little CGC rated comics for sale so I'm going to buy online. I want to pay a price that is fair but a lot of the prices I see on ebay are way more over priced than a lot of the sites that list the value of comics. I don't really care about the resale value of it years down the line because this is something I plan on owning and displaying till the day I die. I'm a big fan of wolverine so a high graded copy of the first issue would be high up on the list for me. I've also started watching the invincible series on prime and would love a copy of issue one but all the variants are confusing and again the price seems overblown but then not being experienced in collecting valuable comics I could be completely wrong here. I'm willing to spend between 1 to 2k. A first issue would be ideal but anything that is a fair price and rare would be preferable. Do you have any advice on where I should go from here?
