The ask on Lotus is $6. The offer was 1/3rd that. Who ever in the history of the world, that doesn't need to money for dire circumstances, ever leapt at 1/3rd ask? Seriously. Show me that guy, and receipts too please lolThat's the proposition being tossed around, that just 1/3rd ask would be taking advantage of the dummy offering it. Based on...? Nothing. Of course.

To be fair I’m quite certain that the offer of 2.5M came before the ask of 6.5M. The ask is in part based on not only other sales but the ever increasing private offers on the Lotus.

    Yeah. Yeah. “Receipts.”

You won't ever get that. If you don't want to believe it that is fine. You aren't a buyer or seller of this material anyway.

That being said all I can tell you is to wait.

Most transactions in this market at these levels are private and will continue to be that way. Still one day an item from this field is bound to have a public sale and that public sale will raise eyebrows with everyone outside looking in. When it does just know that it didn't come from nowhere. The MTG art market has been moving along quickly behind the scenes without the high profile public sales that you are looking for.

You are posting this on an Original Comic Book Art message board full of people who have experience pricing one of a kind pages. The Black Lotus painting is being priced like a Frazetta fantasy book cover painting, in an extremely immature market. Excuse me for being extremely skeptical. I get that its the holy grail of MTG. But, if you have that painting, and want to sell it, you take it over to Sothebys, or Heritage. You don't fuss around on the Facebook MTG message boards.

I understand why you would feel that way. However, it is not being priced like a Frazetta. It is being priced like the most desirable Magic card artwork. Those guys don't care what Frazettas sell for. They care what other Magic items sell for. If less desirable items sell for 750k or 1M then they want multiple millions for the best piece available.

Like the person who finds a beat up copy of Action #1 in his grandmother's attic, and thinks it's worth $3.8 million.

I understand what you saying but there is a difference here.

The difference is that we have multiple sales of several different grades to go off of when we figure out what a comic book it is worth.

You can with some degree of accuracy determine the value of any comic book for insurance or otherwise.

Paintings are one of a kind and harder to value but there are some things that we do know. When it comes to Magic the Black Lotus is clearly the top of the heap. No one disputes that and #2 #3 #4 etc are a good distance away. No matter what it is worth one thing is clear the Black Lotus artwork is worth more than any other Magic artwork. So when lessor examples sell for 750k or 1M it isn't that far of a stretch to say that the Black Lotus artwork is worth more than that at least in the mind of the seller.

So what it is worth in todays market? Clearly more than any other piece of Magic art. How much more well who is to say?

Could the entire market burst like the Bitcoin market of 2017? Sure that is possible too.

Personally I don't own any Magic art but I think that these things are fun to watch.

It's not plausible, because if it were offered, it would have been accepted.

    Why would you say that?

You could call him a lair and I couldn't argue because I don't know.

You could call him crazy for turning down an offer of 2.5 and I couldn't argue that either.

However, you can't say that this person (one that you have never met and don't know) would have to accept said offer if in fact it was made.

if you read his posts one thing is very clear. The seller at least believes it is worth millions.

So, in other words, there is nothing but word of mouth sales outside of the auction house, and this claim the owner received a $2,5 million offer for it is apocryphal, at best.

I don't think anyone here is saying that his statement has been confirmed. Still I can at least confirm the Timewalk sale and if that happened then a 2.5M offer for Lotus is at least possible.

I'm not sure there's any 7 figure completed sales yet (for single pieces).   At least one seven figure sale reported but that was for two pieces.

But a number of pieces starting to scratch at that 7 figures.   Hence the "near" in the title

    That post is confusing.

Buyer of Timewalk is not the buyer of the Mox. So it wasn't one sale.

Just read on MTG art market forums on Facebook that Mox Jet and Farmstead sold. I believe someone said the Mox was $750K asking Farmstead 85K!?! Same person has all the power plus piles of other exemplary examples. Stuff like Wheel of Fortune, Cockatrice. Incredible.

Who has wheel of fortune? The buyer or the seller?

Six figures for ALL STAT? Surely you don't mean a stat like we do in comic art production. Please explain or provide a link. Thanks.

That is my understanding. Not just for this particular mox but for all 6 of them.

The mox gems themselves are all photocopies cut and placed on top of a pre-printed background.

I’ve seen the artist or his agent post about the process when he sells commissions on Facebook.

    ————Edit————

A quick search turns up his website which details both his original process and how he makes them today.

I shipped a 6-figure piece last year for the first time.  I bought a temporary insurance rider from Collectibles Insurance Services (formerly Collectibles Insurance Agency) to cover the shipment.  They charged me 0.05%, which I thought was very reasonable (that's $50 for $100,000 of coverage, $60 for $120,000, etc.)

If you do get a professional shipping service to send the piece, beware of getting annihilated on insurance cost (I had it happen to me once before I knew I could insure my own shipments through CIS).

Six figures and dimensional issues...go with a fine art freight company if none of the previous posts are making sense. I had a 48x60" o/c stretched worth $8k professionally crated, fully insured, and moved from LA to NH on a dedicated "fine arts" truck for...$1k, all in. The care end of things was so overdone too; I couldn't have been more impressed unless...the artist flew it in himself and drove out to my place to hand it off in person...and picked up lunch on the way too. This made sense for a large, fragile, high four figure piece, how much more so for a six figure work? That's where I'm coming from.

Thanks for the advice guys. I do appreciate it.

Early on in my collecting days I had a bad experience and lost some irreplaceable art in a UPS train derailment. This is sort of thing that keeps me up at night

    What are the dimensions ??

It's been a few years since I've flown to a convention.  But I would take a hardsided art case as a carry-on.  The outside dimensions are 23 x 18 x 2.  I would put it in the overhead with the short end going in first.  And put my knapsack on top of it (bottom end goes in first).  Those overheads are actually pretty deep.  No staff ever questioned me about it probably because the overall volume was about the same as a regular carry-on bags on wheels.  Some passengers gave me looks but I looked like pro once I slid the art case in.  I've also put my artcase on the floor under my seat.  Most of it would fit but I would have to have my feet on top of part of it.

Also, if you sit in the back row, there is usually space between the seats and the bathroom walls.  Just stand up the art.

I also put my StudioPack in the overhead, short end (goes in first).  See this post to see:

    Good luck !!

I'm going to have to remove it from the frame to get the exact size but while bigger than your comic art page it isn't huge. Not sure what the limits are for a carry on as I haven't flown since 2004 or so.

Is it painted on canvas?  If so, couldn’t it be removed from the frame and rolled up and sent?  Have it reattached to a new frame?  Or is that a big no-no?

Might remove it from the frame unless the buyer wants it in frame.

However, it can't be rolled. Like almost all videogame artwork  it is painted on board.

  13. Working out the final details on a sale. Just have to iron out payment and delivery details.

Everything seems to be getting more expensive all the time but this is the most that I’ve ever dealt with on a single piece.

Buyer has suggested that I fly it out to him.

This is videogame box art and not comic art so it might be too big to fit into a carry on.

    Any advice is welcome.

They're not graphic novels.  EC published anthology titles, the bulk of which contained four complete stories per book.

Today if I purchase a collection of these stories is it not called a graphic novel?

Amazon has it listed as one.  This is what I am talking about. I’m not planning on tracking down the original comics.
