30s and 40s books with Marvel on them? That would be the first thought that these are probably not GA books...

Or 30 and 40 cent comics with Marvel written at the top?

dingdingding! winner winner chicken dinner!

"30s and 40s..."

hoping not, but that sounds like the most likely scenario

If you owned a LCS and this guy brought in his 40's Superman's and Marvels would you offer him 2-3$ a book and let him leave or would you offer him something more enticing knowing you have gold on your hands?

Artboy99

You forgot this is Winnipeg, MB, Canada: a very depressed economy. The LCS may have only had $60 in the till for his cash offer for GA.

I still remember inviting a LD over to the walk-in closet at my house to look at my long boxes.........sheeeeeesh...that sounds weird!........anyway.........he went through all my amazing from like #100 -200....bunch of Byrne x-men...etc ...I needed some $$, and he got about 100 decent books........

I regret not having those books, and I remember getting around #350 and having serious sellers remorse afterwards. I thought they were prob. worth 3 times that!..But w/ no Internet etc....it was tough back then.....except for the CON's.....but that's where I lost my beautiful copy of ASM #50..........but that's another story..........BH......

Here's what I know.....

1) My brother says the guy is 80 years old.

2) While helping him move, he noticed about 100 comic books from (what he says) were printed in the '30's and 40's.

3) After talking briefly to the owner of the books, he's advised me

a) a local comic shop already offered him about $2 - $3 a book based on a small handful he showed him

b) he described some of the comics as being "Marvel" and "Superman"

4) My brother says the comics are in good shape

I gave him my number and am hoping he'll call me today to set up a time when I can have a look at these.

Just thought I'd share, as I know many of you like to hear stories like this.

Good luck Herb

Ok, here's what was in the colleciton. He was reading .12 and .15 cent cover prices and thought those were the comics from the '40's. I pointed out how to destiquish the age by looking at the bottom of the first page and pointed out those comics were from the '70's or therebouts.

So, the most valuable comic in the collection was an Amazing Spider-Man 91 in about VF+ condition. There were some Sgt. Fury's in mostly VG - VG+ condition. A few modern $1.00 books like GI Combat, a few Weird War and Sgt. Rock...all .60 cent cover price. Also a small run of Atlas comics (Lomax, Planet of Vampires, Phoenix, & Wulf. Most of the moderns were in at least VF+ or better.

All in all I gave him a price I was willing to pay. Alot less than guide, but more than what a comic shop would give. If he would have turned me down, I would have walked. So, considering he accepted the offer and I wasn't willing to pay any more, it was a good deal for both of us. The only book that really interested me was the Spider-Man 91.

What I didn't take was some modern independents, some 12 - 20 cover Walt Disney Stories, Donald Duck....all mostly in VG or worse....well read stuff. Not sure what this stuff is worth, but it just didn't interest me.

He did say he has a stack of Superman comics he has yet to show me and will call me when he hast them at the house...but...not too exited at this point.

He also had records in pretty decent shape....78's. LP's out of the 60's. NOt sure what this stuff is worth (if anything) but I will let my buddy Doug Sulipa know to see if hes' interested in buying any of this stuff.

He did say he has some baseball cards like circa "Mickey Mantle". Have no idea what that stuff would be worth...as I'm not in tune with cards. He's gonna show these to me the next time I come by to look at the rest of the comics.

All in alll....a bit dissapointing. But from what I read on the forum....they usually are.

You gave your brother your number to give to the old guy or you gave it to the old guy yourself? If you did not speak to the fellow and give him your number directly, I wouldn't wait around to see if he calls you, I'd get on the phone right away and then get over to inspect the books ASAP (and prepared to give him cash right there) if you really think these are decent GA books.

Yep. Go over to the guys house today and introduce yourself. Bring money.

Well, at least you got some books of interest. I have a collection to look at in northern Vermont. A friend of a friend died last year, and his son has the collection in storage. Supposedly, it's substantial but, mostly 70's and 80's Marvel Hulk, Spiderman, (all super-hero) with some older issues. I hope it's still there when I get up there. (Probably not until christmas). I'm not going to get my hopes up because I have had many disapointments.
