educate me please.......how desirable is Action Comics #7 ??

66 posts in this topic

Tec 31 has a much better cover than Action 7 IMO.... In fact other than issue 1, all the first Tec 29-36 Batman covers are better than the Action 7 10 13 15 on up Superman covers. They're just grittier

Point taken...but to me the Action #7 cover is wonderful. If you were a kid in 1938 looking to spend your dime, and saw the Action #7 cover, how could you not buy that book? It captures the light-hearted essence of the early Siegel & Shuster Superman, and the fun of having all that power, much the way that Tec #31 captures the "gritty" essence of the early Batman. I love 'em both.

Tec 31 has a much better cover than Action 7 IMO and Action 1 is better than Tec 27 (more focus on Superman). In fact other than issue 1, all the first Tec 29-36 Batman covers are better than the Action 7 10 13 15 on up Superman covers. They're just grittier

Would generally agree with this analysis. (thumbs u

I must admit the Action 7 is a real standout cover since it clearly focuses in on Superman as the central character. Action 13, although nice is not at the same level since Supes is much smaller, with the train being the central image on the cover.

The CGC census lists the indicated total number of copies graded for each of the following Action Comics:

# 1 = 35

# 7 = 15

# 10 = 16

# 13 = 10

# 15 = 24

# 17 = 26

# 19 = 23

# 20 = 15

# 21 = 20

# 22 = 35

# 23 = 35

# 24 = 17

Do those numbers seem to be an accurate gauge of the comics relative rarity, compared to each other?

15 and up are definitely more "common" in terms of being for sale...but, there are likely the same number of issue 10's out there as, say 20...just has to do with desirability and folks that leave in their collections longer

I believe I read the # of copies printed/sold started steadily increasing around issue 15 or so.

From my experience, issues 7-13 are much tougher than 4-6 & 14-23. For example, there are only nine CGC graded copies of Action #9, with only 2 being unrestored.

Interesting to note that issue #13 comes in with the lowest number of copies. I believe we had a thread going on here about how hard it was to actually find a copy of this particular issue of Action Comics.

I would also have to say the numbers for issue #1 are probably skewed since everybody and his dog would slabbed this issue more than any other if it was sitting in their collection.

Not sure about the skewing of the Action #1.

Owners pre-CGGC may not have slabbed their issues unless they had the intention to sell in immediate term.

The 2.5% fee and having to travel to Florida to get it slabbed would be a disincentive?

On the over-hand the restoration check is definetly useful for peace of mind.

pretty much my experience, apart from #24 which is 'common'. 15 and up are usually available without a long search. Pending grade, obviously.

Back to the scarcity/pricing of Action #7, I only recall seeing one unrestored copy hit the regular channels in the last 4 years.

This copy sold over 2 years ago: Action #7 sale

This same copy was later listed on Ebay & Comiclink with "buy it now" prices around $20,000 - $24,000 (or about 4x guide at the time). I don't know if it actually sold at this pricing however.
