For those willing to share their new scrambled eBay ID's

21 posts in this topic

I have not been bidding much on ebay since the change to the totally hidden ID's for auctions over 200 was instituted.

I feel a little better about the new setup. From what I had heard on the boards the "masked ID" that they are coming up with should be the same for what ever items you bid on, so a list would not be that hard to maintain. If anyone else wants to go public, they can add to this thread

Actual eBay ID Masked ID

I sure wish that I could figuree out how to put tabs or columns into my posts

I think it changes with each auction randomly no?
That's what I thought as well.
You are wrong

I haven't bid on an eBay auction for over $200 since the change.

I buy my better stuff here now like FoolKiller's ASM 9. :cloud9:

It has to be random...letter***letter equates to 26x26 combinations...or 676 names max...unless of course the asterisks *** are all the representative numbers...which I guess is the case but then you could have 100+ bidders on one item all with the same t***t for example...huh...the whole thing makes no sense...

for the purposes you've stated, I could tell you my id is t***t and you could then say, that's funny...so am I...double huh?

I still say the whole scheme has NO VALUE whatsoever to the consumer/user...

I've also noticed that eBay will scramble IDs in certain circumstances even when the price hasn't reached $200.

Here's one example with a reserve (book is currently at $54)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290161537035&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019

To me, this is a dead giveawy that the reserve is $200 or more for this auction. Not necessarily a surprise for this book, but some sellers may not want to give up that kind of information. After all, reserves aren't made public for a reason I suppose.

Another example with a reserve and a BIN (currently at $184):

http://cgi.ebay.com/X-Men-134-CGC-9-8-John-Byrne-art-Phoenix_W0QQitemZ280152301666QQihZ018QQcategoryZ33826QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Now, here's another example that I feel can screw the buyer (currently at $150)

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tomb-of-Dracula-19-CGC-9-8-w-Blade_W0QQitemZ150160303689QQihZ005QQcategoryZ33824QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

No reserve, but I'm betting the buyer has already bid $200 or more for this book and eBay is completely selling him out here. Shillers have to love this! Punishment bids anyone? Seriously, does eBay even think these things through?

More examples:

Currently at $199.99

currently at $199.99

currently at $190.50

1 Bid at $180...too bad now everyone knows he's atleast put a bid of $200 in- including any shillers out there.

Anyways, you guys get the picture. Ebay's really out there protecting buyers and seller aren't they? :boo:

I placed a bid on another item which I was sure had a very high reserve and my bid shows up with the same code. including the 0-9 there are only 1296 diffrent combinations so the choice could not even be close to unique, but so far it does seem to be consistent for me.

I agree with you about the ability for additional thrill/punishment/shill bidding for items that start out under 200 ( or is it actually 199.99) but have reserves higher, but I do not think that those will have any real impact since reserve will not be met anyway.

So, I was checking out who won this auction http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=300152605337 and realize I can see all the bidder's IDs even though it ended at $213.50. So, WTF? Has eBay once again changed it's policy, or am I missing something here?

One can only hope they changed, cause that was such a LAME idea...

I was just looking at some other eBay auctions that also closed out tonight over $200, and their ID's are scrambled, so who knows? (shrug)

Item location: Westbank, British Columbia, Canada

Maybe he listed through eBay Canada and the rules are different.
