Barry Windsor Smith - Weapon X

22 posts in this topic

Just got this two-page sequence from the final moments of the Weapon X origin story by BWS, from back in 1991. Barry wrote, penciled, inked and even lettered most of this story! This sequence has Weapon X wandering the snow in Canada, after breaking out of the compound. This leads directly into his discovery by the Hudsons, incorporation into Alpha Flight, and then of course to his defection to the X-Men. Hope you enjoy 'em!

Congrats on the pickup, Hari! I've always considered WEAPON X to be Marvel's answer to Batman's "Year One" storyline. As you pointed out, BWS really did it all here, a real tour de force in a great career.

Great peice, so what was the damage to the wallet?

Wallet looks fine, it's a little thinner though ;)

In and of itself it wasn't that painful, but this plus the two Goreys all in the last two weeks adds up to a "real" dent. But, it keeps me happy, so I can't put a price on that :)

That splash is one of my favorites as well. I bought it for next to nothing about 6 years ago, and it has remained one of the best (artistically, and from a pure impact standpoint) pieces in my collection to this day. It is hands-down the best nightcrawler splash that Cockrum has EVER done, in my honest opinion. Needless to say, it's worth a lot more now than when I originally bought it. Everyone who has seen this in person has marveled at it. Joe Rubenstein did a GREAT job painstakingly inking it over Cockrum's pencils.

I only wish that I could afford a nice page from this story.

I'll have to settle for the TPB. ;)

The pages have certainly heated up of late! As Conan prices go through the roof, it was only a matter of time before his next best work (Weapon X) followed suit. His X-Men stuff commands similar price.

Hari,

These are actually some of my favorite pages of the book. I am partial to snow scenes.

Great pick-up. Nice stuff.

Joe

Yeah, I like the snow scenes too. Such large chunks of snow are something that adds to the peaceful gloom of the scene. Worked perfectly for the story, and the mood.

Not only Cockrum... that has to be the nicest nightcrawler page or splash I have ever seen... please point me to one nicer than that one. Congrats on getting a gorgeous piece like that before prices blew up

Hey Hari,

Congrats again on the pickup. I thought you'd be interested in some history behind your pages (in case you didn't know already). They were sold (along with two others) in July on Ebay for...$1500 each, BIN. I would say that's upwards of 50% off FMV. Most people didn't see them because they were listed in the middle of the day and, as you can imagine, someone hit the BIN as soon as they went up. Here they are:

No, I was not one of the lucky ones, a fellow board member sent me the links after the fact. One of the pages showed up on Mike Burkey's site a couple of months later for $3000. Anyhow, the seller apparently got the pages directly from BWS...read the auction descriptions, some interesting stuff, including the fact that the pages you got are among BWS's favorites. Enjoy!

VERY COOL! Thanks for the links, Felix! I may contact the seller for the original email communications he mentioned.

Thanks again, you're the man!
