Jack Kirby recreations . . .

17 posts in this topic

Hey everyone

I dont normally post in here, but I wanted to ask about this. Has anyone here commissioned another artist to do some sort of Jack Kirby homage, cover recreation, or "after Jack Kirby" sketch? If so, who are the top guys to do it?

Any samples available? How much would a sktech or cover recreation cost?

I'm asking because I'm considering pursuing such a piece. I'd love to have some sort of Kirby style Cap sketch for my collection - but who would be the best person to go to, and what are the costs and chances of going for such a thing?

Any help is appreciated!

I'd have to look through my copies of TJKC to verify, but I believe they had recreations by Sinnott & Royer in there. I think Greg Theakston also has done Kirby recreations published in The Jack Kirby Collector. I could be mistaken, though. It's been a while since I looked through some of those issues.

Bob Layton does some very nice "after Kirby" recreations that have Kirby flavor and Layton style and covers run something like $400 or so. All the work I've seen by Bob is first-rate and he's one of the industry's true talents. In fact, I have a piece that he lightboxed from the Kirby pencils to the cover of Iron Man 90, it's in my CAF gallery (linked from my sig below).

You can check Bob's website for exact pricing, it's www.boblayton.com. Of course, Bob specializes in Iron Man work (as FFB has often said, nobody draws armor like Bob Layton!) but I've seen a few of his recreations of TOS covers that had Iron Man and Cap and they were fantastic.

Good luck

Steve

it may seem like a bit of an odd request, but i want a Cap sketch in the style/pose from the way he's portrayed on the cover of #100.

having recently obtained a sketch for each of the artists that worked on various Cap #1's, I now crave a Kirby style Cap for the #100 issue.

The real thing was being offered last year for private sale. I don't know if it moved or not.

For a recreation in the Kirby style, I would recommend Steve Rude. He's a great artist in his own right, as well as a professed Kirby fan. Here are some examples from CAF:

And it looks like someone already had the same idea:

Without reading your post I clicked the links and thought, "That looks like someone doing Steve Rude doing Kirby", not realizing it was actually Rude. lol

Steve is a 100% Kriby man. He's usually pretty busy but would do a great "after Kirby".
