I had to bite the bullet more than once...

I had a run of 15 FFs 130s-150s with the Marvel Value stamp cut out in each (only in the 146 was the story affected) for $1 No Reserve.

Only 1 bid so they went for $1.00. blush.gif

It is always possible that someone made him an offer "HE COULDN"T REFUSE".

Say, someone said I will give you $15 for the book now, or I'm going to bid the $.01, what would you do?

Just a possiblity.

It's possible, but, on both of them?

One of the lots was Formerly Known As the Justice League... a brand new title. Not many people go around making offers on new books, three of which were still on the stands at one of my locals shops.

Also, the Firestorm book was bid up to $28.50. It's not like it was going off for pennies.

The seller just cancelled two more auctions.

Avengers 217

Avengers 190

Hey Rick,

Where were you when I had these?

That's right, he got them from me...last month! 'Bout $20 a piece.

Guess selling them for 1c each kinda puts him in the red ?

I saw your auctions, but at the time I had to pay for a more expensive book and couldn't afford those auctions. This time around it was worth the $20 bid for both books. I wouldnt have gone higher than that though. Still cheaper than paying for the slab fee and shipping. What else you got, anyway? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Actually, no.

$12 grading + 1.25s/h-ins + .75c book + 1.30 ebay fees = $15.30 my out of pocket expense

$20 price + 6.95 s/h (no ins) = $26.95 selling total

Slabbing the book is actually appx 43% cheaper.

But here's the kicker: finding a 9.6! How many Avengers #217's are offered in this condition every year? How can you be sure the raw one you buy is in fact a 9.6. How long will it take for you to find one? How many copies will you go through? How much is your time & effort worth to you?

I don't know why the market has not caught on to grading middle-of-the-road numbered issues of popular titles...? It's not like they're in abundance; demand is lower, but there are definitely 'completist' buyers out there who would love to have a complete high-grade CGC set for a reasonable price.

Thoughts, anybody?

Rick

PS: Have another batch coming in next week 893crossfingers-thumb.gif. Mainly Silver Age.

Been lurking for a bit, and decided to post.

Thats exactly how I've decided to start collecting graded comics.

I started out with one comic, and picked up a few more form the same seller, so I could catch the break on the shipping. And then those few comics became the core and I collect out from there. Searching out the next or previous issue and then trying to add more titles as I find combined deals on shipping.

With the idea that down the road my graded comic collection will consist of decent runs of a few titles.

All that is to say is I would be part of that market to pick up non key graded issues.

Welcome to the boards, xrcst thumbsup2.gif...Not a direct response to your comment, but to answer JLA...if you have a definite clientele who you know is willing to MAKE it WORTH your time and risk to send in middle of the road non-key modern issues (ie, dolphinsrwj, and spider9698 with ther Spidey runs) then I'd do it. On the other hand, if I had time and some money to burn on the grading of those non keys, I'd do it and price it with a higher starting bid (24.99 or 34.99), then hold or lower prices if things don't sell.
