Jason Ewhert Scandal?

134 posts in this topic

The last I heard, Steve B told him to make himself scarce as far as the comic biz was concerned and I don't know if he has been seen since. I think someone did mention seeing him somewhere, though I don't believe it was comic related. It's my understand he was just part of a larger circle that was never identified publicly.

Good summary , I just added one word.

:applause: The legal action was probably like into a wind storm so I'm not surprised that no one stepped forward because what would they have gain for all their troubles anyways? Also, its not clear but there appeared to be an issue between the lawyers handling the case. Just from my perspective, not saying this is true or not but Scott (FFB) made some comments and appeared to be choked at Mark (Esquire), something to do with fees. I think they were going to do this pro bono (for free?) but perhaps still had to discuss a fee structure for the record? I don't know I'm not a lawyer so I'm not familar with the process but it was never really fully explained and the process kind of died on the wine at that point. Never heard much about a "larger circle", just the collector who did business with Ewart and I believe he guaranteed a refund. Still puzzles me how CGC limited the tainted book period for a specific period of time. I remember because I had purchased a book from Ewart on Ebay that was up to a year prior to the start date that CGC indicated.

Throw in the issue(s) about why Steve B was listed on the corporate registry of that paper conservation venture (it was suggested that it was a mistake, who knows), that CGC marketing guys comments threatening legal action, threads getting pulled for questionable reasons, etc, etc and it was hard not to have a negative outlook about the hobby at that time.

was he ever brought up on any charges?

No. some of the board lawyers did some preliminary leg work in hopes of getting a lawsuit against him but it stalled early on in the process.

I guess they realized the negative press would hurt their investments in slabbed comics. Best to keep it quiet. :baiting:

No, their problem was that they didn't have a client. No one who was wronged by Ewert stepped forward to be part of the legal action.

That makes sense. You can't really say Ewert did something illegal I guess, it just wasn't ethical. If you know you have a restored comic and you want to send it into CGC, you don't have to tell them it is restored (or destroyed in the case of trimming).

Is CGC at fault? Only if it could be proven that they knew these were trimmed and were in some way benefiting from it along with Ewert..

so ya, I can see why this went no where.

Only if fraud isn't illegal.

Very informative thread... Especially for someone new to the boards. I have a quick newbie question.. What are the standard sizes for comics? It there a difference between older Marvel and more modern, etc...? Are there any good pieces of literature out there to read up on restoration (coins have multiple books on this subject) Thanks!

And just to give a little more background, Ewert was considered a "great guy" and highly recommended on these Boards before, and actually continued a short time by some after, the scandal became public...

Yeah, how much flak did I take on the Ewert deal, and didn't a few of the apologists even blame me for some of it?

If I have a book that I know has been restored and I send it in to CGC... and they give it a blue label... where is the fraud? Is it my fault they missed it?

I only see an ethical issue against Jason... clearly he lacks ethics... anything to get a buck...

If I bought a cgc graded comic with trimming and it had a blue label I would want CGC to compensate me for their mistake.

I see what you are trying to say but saying that there was only an "ethical issue" with Ewert is ridiculous. CGC did not initially catch the trimming and that lets the person who submitted(knowing full well what was done to the books) and possibly( (shrug) ) trimmed the books offf the hook?
