The best advice I can give is it works the opposite of how you think it should for the newer than and older than items...

Quotation marks around the phrase? What are you trying to search for?

Try searching for a specific word or phrase with quotation marks around it.

I was trying to search for some info on buying from pedigree comics. I did manage to find a lot of usless junk with the search function.

Put this in the search " pedigree comics " and be sure to use the older than and newer than options ...

My one tip is to use the plus sign, which means 'this word AND this word'

 

+highest +graded +avengers

 

...will find posts that use ALL 3 of those words.

 

If you don't use the plus sign, it will find posts that use any 1 or more of those words.

Architect should make "older than" the default. I always change it. Or at least make it an option as part of your preferences.

My advice is "don't use it"!!

 

I can never find anything while using it, I usually end up getting frustrated and POed everytime I try to search for anything.

I came across a thread last week while searching for something else. It's exact title is "All or Nothing?". I made a mental note to look at it later. Search function is useless. I even tried running the same search as last week which now doesn't work. WTF!
