It's interesting that Independent News refers to Post-Implosion Atlas as Goodman Comics.

whenever i see a newsstand pic with a comic, i try to identify the comic and date the pic. it's a weird compulsion but it's a brain teaser or puzzle for me.

sometimes i get it quickly and other times it takes a long time.

magazines and newspaper headlines help date the photos. in the process of searching, i learn a bit of interesting history.

let's look at some new york newsstands shown before.

this is fairly easy to date from the headline of japan declaring war- december 8, 1941.

a world's finest 4 is between the lantern and the newspaper.

17816515-d02.jpg

this wall st & broadway pic is is easy to date from headline describing d-day, the allied invasion of france- june 6 1944.

sure shot 1 on the right.

17536140-b7e.jpg

this is a terrific pic posted by detective35DF with many comics including a sub-mariner 1. it took me a long time to figure out the date. first clue of the date is the april 1941 issue of popular science. the second clue is the headline "jail yugo cabinet in anti-axis coup".

17816485-2e3.jpg

a bit of history: following agreements with hungary, romania and bulgaria that they would join the axis, hitler put pressure on yugoslavia to join the tripartite pact.

prince paul of yugoslavia succumbed to this pressure on march 25 1941. this move was deeply unpopular amongst the anti-axis serbian public and military. a coup d'etat was launched on march 27 1941 by anti-paul serbian military officers and the prince was replaced by king peter II of yugoslavia. hitler took the coup as a personal insult and was determined to destroy yugoslavia militarily and as a nation without waiting for possible declarations of loyalty. yugoslavia was invaded by the axis on april 6 and surrendered on april 17 1941.

so i date this photo to the day after the coup, march 28 1941. on this date sub-mariner 1 was available on the stands.

here's a new pic of a sailor reading the headlines.

17816487-769.jpg

are there comics here? yes, an action 53 comic and others in this closeup!

17816492-ea7.jpg

what's the date? first clue is the august 15 1942 issue of the new yorker.

17816494-3de.jpg

secondary clues are the newspaper headlines, 9 hrs in france, in land raid, dieppe and raiders back in england.

17816496-0be.jpg17816499-2bd.jpg

the dieppe raid, also known as operation rutter or jubilee, was an allied attack on the german-occupied port of dieppe in france that took place on aug 19 1942. it was a test for the full-scale invasion of western europe and it was one of the biggest land battles of ww 2 between the allies and germans up to that point. the raid was a failure, accomplished no major objectives and the 6000 allied forces consisting of mainly canadians suffered 60% casualties who were killed, wounded or captured. the germans with a force of about 1500 men only had 311 dead and 280 wounded. i date this pic to be aug 20 1942, the day after the raid.

Odd thing about this photo. The comic on the stands between the LH kids feet is WDC&S #91. On the ground in front of him is WDC&S #69. There's almost two full years between those issues - which makes me wonder if there's a mix of newstand and the kids' own comics there?

hm No . . .Ducks don't sell. lol

Good catch. Given the two different pics with varying personnel, I'd be plonking for a staged shoot.

My 10c.

there's a lot of pulps in the stand by no comics. check out all the interesting advertising signs.

before he became a film maker, stanley kubrick started out as a free lance photographer after high school and became the youngest staff photographer for look magazine from 1947 to 1950. among his numerous pictures of new york life, he took many shots of this newsstand. this newsstand was at a busy corner with a subway entrance and next to a nedick's restaurant. nedick's was a fast-food chain that originated in new york in the early 1920s and ceased operation in 1981 due to competition from chains such as mcdonald's and dunkin' donuts.

are there comics here? of course. can you spot them all from these closeup shots? hm

18237380-e91.jpg18237394-1da.jpg

so when were these pictures taken? the first clue is this issue of saturday evening post which would tell you the week.

18237396-b99.jpg

this closeup of the headlines here will give you a clue of the exact date. did you figure it out?

18237402-3e1.jpg

here's a kubrick picture of a little girl in front of an ideal toys "baby sparkle plenty doll" display.

18237406-cf5.jpg

the doll was a hot item like the cabbage patch dolls when it went on sale on july 28, 1947 for $5.98. even though 10,000 sold in the first five days, the doll is difficult to find today.

18237429-5f3.jpg

i hope you like new york. i'll be here for a while... ;)

the pier 57 fire was one of the largest pier fires in new york history up to that time. smoke from a massive fire pours out from pier 57 on the hudson river at 15th street in new york, sept 29, 1947. the blaze swept the structure for more than 16 hours causing most of the pier to collapse into the river.

18244931-017.jpg

Off the cuff, I got:

C - 8

D - 5

E - 6

G - 10

H - 13

I - 9

J - 11

K - 7

L - 4

I guess I am less familiar with pics of the real old timers.

I think "C" is George McManus with Buster Keaton and "E" is Milton Caniff with Joan Crawford.

Also, I think "A" is Chic Young with some Blondie look alikes or models (?)

I know a few of the other celebrities but not the matching cartoonist.

My picks are based on a combination of personal knowledge, google searches and pure guesswork...

- A is Chic Young, creator of Blondie (cartoon #11), and the two cuties are, If we believe Wikipedia, picture, Jane Lane and Gretchen Davidson (both models).

- B is Otto Soglow, creator of The Little King (#3). The lady is singer Kate Smith.

- C is George McManus, creator of Bringing Up Father (#8). The other guy, of course, is Buster Keaton.

- D Is Zack Mosley (Smilin' Jack, #5).

- E is Milton Caniff (Steve Canyon, #6) with Joan Crawford.

- F is Billy DeBeck (Barney Google, #1) with Jack Dempsey.

- G is Alex Raymond, creator of Secret Agent X-9 (#10).

- H is Harold Grey, creator of Little Orphan Annie (#13).

- I... No idea!

- J is (probably) Chic Young again, with (definitely!) Olivia De Havilland.

- K is Hal Foster (Prince Valiant, #7)

- L would probably be Billy De Beck again, since the strip pictured is Snuffy Smith.

Based on the comic characters pictured, I would assume that the cartoonist in picture "I" is either Walt Kelly, V.T. Hamlin, or Ham Fisher.

But I could be wrong...

I'm pretty sure the person on the left of the "I" photo is Ted Williams.

Assuming Scrooge is correct (a pretty good assumption) and "I" matches #9, then you also have Ham Fisher (Joe Palooka).

You mean Ted Williams the baseball player, right?

My lack of familiarity with this particular sport is showing. The guy is (as far as I know) a legend and even though I've heard of him, I had never even seen a single photo of his so as to know what he looks like. :sorry:

Yes, the baseball player. The Splendid Splinter.

I just noticed you're from Greece. I'm surprised you've even heard of him.

American culture (pop or otherwise) is my passion. Sports, movies, TV, comics, literature, you name it.

It started with some Batman comic books when I was 5 and it all went to hell from there.

But baseball is the only one I could never really get. Even though I love most movies that deal with the sport, I could never really convince myself to watch an actual game. :shy:
