Worth Sending to CGC?

10 posts in this topic

I have some books that I am considering sending to CGC. I’m looking for suggestions as to which books are worth sending, and which books aren’t, from the standpoint of salability. I know I can look at GP analysis et al, but I’m looking for more “human” advice. I don’t have an unlimited budget, so I’m probably looking at sending about 10 of them right now. Anyway, here they are with my best estimates of the grades they might receive:

Amazing Spider-Man(’63) #38 7.0-7.5

Amazing Spider-Man #49 8.0-8.5

Amazing Spider-Man #59 8.0-8.5

Amazing Spider-Man #59 6.0-6.5

Amazing Spider-Man #71 8.0-8.5

Amazing Spider-Man #92 9.0-9.2

Amazing Spider-Man #98 6.0-6.5

Avengers(1963) #2 5.0-6.0

Avengers #25 6.5-7.0

Avengers #27 8.5-9.0

Avengers #47 5.5-6.0

Conan the Barbarian(1971) #11 9.0-9.2

Fantastic Four(1961) #27 7.0-8.0

Fantastic Four #47 6.5-7.0

Fantastic Four #56 8.0-8.5

Fantastic Four #60 8.5-9.0

Fantastic Four #68 7.0-7.5

Fantastic Four #72 8.5-9.0

Fantastic Four #73 8.0-8.5

Fantastic Four #74 7.5-8.0

Fantastic Four #91 8.5-9.2

Fantastic Four #92 8.5-9.2

Spectacular Spider-Man # 1 9.2-9.4

Swamp Thing #37 9.4-9.6

Thor #137 9.2-9.4

Wolverine (1988) # 1 9.4-9.6

X-Men(1963) #50 8.0-8.5

X-Men #53 7.5-8.0

X-Men #98 9.0-9.4

X-Men #100 6.0-6.5

X-Men #107 8.0-8.5

X-Men #107 9.0-9.2

X-Men #138 9.4-9.6

Thanks for any constructive opinions.

You would probably be better off selling them raw. The grades aren't high enough to merit spending money to slab them. You would get guide for most of them at best. And you'd still be out the slabbing costs. Even on the 9.0's and 9.2's you might do a little better than guide on the books, but it'd be tough to cover the cost of slabbing them.

Also, do you currently have any CGC'd books as a frame of reference? They can surprise you on grades sometimes!

IMHO - Listed here are my opinions on what is worth grading. Test the waters on these with a small grading shipment to see how accurate you are. Almost all these are right on the borderline of being worth it to grade. If you are wrong to the bad side by 1.0, you'll come out behind versus selling them raw on nearly all of them. If you get a pleasant surprise of about 0.5 on all of them, you'll come out way ahead - but DON'T expect pleasant surprises.

There IS a market for lower graded CGC stuff (especially in the books you listed). So even if you are wrong by 1.0 or 2.0 on some of them, you should still be able to recover most of your grading expenses. You just won't make any profit on them.

Good luck.

PS: Just listing these on the forum with big scans might get you some reasonable prices. Most of the books I recommended grading, if they were CGC graded and listed on eBay, you would get $45 - $55 for the lower end of your grade and $65 - $80 on the upper end. A couple ran up to $100 to $125 at the high end. If you could get $20 to $40 apiece (on average) raw, I'd say sell em raw.

Thanks a lot for going through my list. I am definitely going to get a feel for how my grading compares CGC grading before I run out and send these all away. I have a certificate for three free express submissions to CGC, and right now I'm leaning towards sending the FF 27, Avengers 2, and Thor 137. The Thor will be particularly intriguing because the CGC census shows them having only graded 12, less than half as many times as they have graded other Thor issues from this period. It's also the first appearance of Sif.

Where in Annandale? Always good to see more DC area board members. I'm in Reston. Darth's in Centreville. Chrisco37 is in Falls Church(? or Oz, not sure). Lantern's local.

Donut: If you follow Steely Dan's advice, you just hop on the wolverine down to Annandale...unless you're never going back to your old school...
