ComicBook Marketplace article about pre-hero prototypes?

15 posts in this topic

I posted this in Silver but thought some of you OA experts might be able to help.

I believe an early issue of Comic Book Marketplace had an article about pre-hero prototypes. I think Conrad may have been one of the people interviewed or maybe even who contributed -- I've often heard that he helped to coin many of the prototypes now listed in Overstreet.

Does anybody know what issue that was in?

And would anybody have a copy of the article they could scan and post or email to me?

Thanks!

#36 has Detective Dan on the cover, it has an article entitled "Rewriting Comic Book History" which I guess could be about proto-types. This came from Atomic Avenue and I don't have a copy, so I can't vouch for it one way or another.

You're looking for Marvel pre-hero prototypes, aren't you?

There's one article in 21 that comprehensively covers the books (inc. prototypes) but I think you are referring to a later article that was solely devoted to the prototypes.

I had a realization a few weeks ago that the first "new" Marvel character that still exists today is none other than....

the Hulk!

Actually, the Hulk I'm referring to is the prototype one that appeared in Journey Into Mystery #62 (Nov. 1960). He was later referred to by his proper name - Xemnu (the Titan).

Can anyone think of a Marvel character (aside from the those from the Golden Age or the 50's revival) that pre-dates Xemnu?

Here's the article from issue 21. Pages 29-31 discusses prototypes of future more popular characters.

I've tried for 2 years to the OK from Dr. Townsend to post this article on my OhTheHorror.com site. He won't grant permission as his agent states that this article conflicts with the author brand they are trying to establish. (shrug)

He is a member of the boards so he is actually more likely to find out about than you might think.
