2004 Comic Book Crash

Yes....it's going to happen in 2005.... gossip.gif

And if not 2005, then 2006, for sure! Or maybe 2007 or 2008. But it's definitely going to happen and if I keep guessing long enough the cyclical nature of markets will eventually prove me right, and that's what's important dammit

A crash will occur. Who knows when? My guess-sooner than later. YOu won't see it coming. Once you recognize the crash, books will only be sold at substantial discounts. The industry will undergo a long period of supply overhanging the market which might take decades to work off. The bigger problem would be if an economic downturn in the economy leads to a "crash of financial assets". Then you might find yourself in need of money during an illiquid period. That's my view but I'm not as smart as some of the other posters.

What's up with this 2004 Comic Book Crash?!?! Can anyone elaborate on this?

A crash has been predicted for about 25-30 years now. So, when you here anything about some kinda crash in the year 20 something.....don't worry about it.

So what you're saying is that an old issue of Hulk has crashed the market? Is Hulk really that popular?

I don't think its the Hulk. I think the OTHER character in that book is pretty damn popular, that Wendigo character. Boy, I'll bet those books take off!

Lest we get carried away joking about the crash that is supposedly never coming, may I humbly remind everyone that there are a ton of books out there that are selling for fractions (in some extreme cases less than 1/10th) of their peak prices from the past couple of years. While high grade Hulk #181 and ASM #129 grab all the headlines with eye-popping sales, many lesser keys, semi-keys and virtually all non-keys are well off their best levels. Look at Miller Daredevils, which in some cases sell for as little as 8 cents on the dollar from prices paid just a year and a half ago. If that's not a crash, I don't know what is.

And lest you think "Bah, that's just Bronze and Modern 893censored-thumb.gif", let's not forget the absolute bloodbath certain buyers have taken in high grade ASM keys (what did that guy, Italian_Treasure?, lose on the resale of that ASM #1 CGC 9.6...$60K?), which are among the most coveted of all the SA books. Even several former uber-bulls on this Board have been sounding a lot like toned-down versions of Joe_Collector these days (even though they still purport to be bullish). It's been widely noted in recent weeks that prices have been softening of late. Whether that leads to the Crash of 2004 or not remains to be seen. Personally, I am agnostic on the timing of any such major decline, but when (not if) it does happen, I am sure that it will start off looking like any other normal correction...not unlike that which we have been experiencing lately. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Gene, not that we need to discuss this again, but I question some of your examples. When you point out stuff like that ASM 1 which was during a period of unprecedented over spending, you in a way are saying "ignore all these other examples of books that haven't crashed, however, check out this book which was bought on the opposite end of the spectrum and see how it's crashed".

What I'm saying is you tell us to disregard stuff like spikes in price for Hulk 181 or ASM 129 which would be one extreme end of the spectrum but then tell us to keep in mind the extreme drop between that ASM 1. To be fair you can't argue away one extreme with it's extreme polar opposite.

Obviously I can't attest to every market, but in the ASM market prices are really not even significantly off of earlier ones. If anything 9.4's of the early bronze ASMs have gotten more hot. Surely more common ASM's and the late 60's, early 70's have dropped a bit. But they have been consistently selling in a price frame (give or take 25-50 dollars) for roughly almost 2 years.

I really can't say if books are going to crash or not, and frankly I don't really care because I enjoy buying them. It would probably suck to loose hundreds of thousands of dollars on these books, but like any other collectible you take a chance (however small or big it may be) that you can lose/gain money. You just have to buy for the right reasons. Whatever those may be..
