High grade specimens like the Caps you and Jimbo posted are the exception rather than the rule. The Cookeville collection was certainly large enough and vintage enough to qualify as a pedigree, but the vast majority of the copies I've seen are in the VG to VF range. In fact, Overstreet used the Marvel Tales #93 I posted earlier as an example of a VG+ book in the First Edition of his Comic Book Grading Guide. Here's my only book from the Cookeville collection: On the subject as to what constitutes a collection versus a Pedigree....according to Borock quantity was never the issue. I asked him specifically as to why the Williamsport collection was not considered a pedigree. There was a vast run of high grade books from the 50's with many books grading well above 9.0. They were bought off the stands by the father. Borock insisted that the #1 issues needed to be in very high grade. The early issues in the Williamsport collection (purchased by the father) were well read and the issues were given relatively low grades. The son continued to buy the books but never read any leaving a very high grade comic collection. Thus, Borock insisted, it's a collection and with the dearth of high grade 1's couldn't be considered a pedigree.

After looking through this thread I am thinking about renaming my website "low grade comics". I am proud to sheepishly show my Batman 2 : Heck... One more

Since this isn't a selling thread I have to speak out. This book was just purchased less than a month ago for 1255.00 . Based on it's eye appeal I can see why this sale was so low. The 1255 is now the last sale GPA. I think you if you put this up for sale in the near future, before another GPA sale, you will have a difficult time even getting your money back. It is not an attractive copy with the flaws smacking you right in the face. Sorry. Why apologize? You gave me what I asked for as honestly as possible. I appreciate all the responses. I knew exactly what I was buying. The book is what it is. Jay

Since the participants in this thread seem to be the expert on the Showcase 22, I was wondering what my copy should sell for? I bought it fairly recently, and I clearly saw all the flaws. I'll probably list it for sale in the next few months and was wondering about pricing the issue.

Are there any SF Tmely's that you are willing to say that you "used to own". Maybe, I could make it happen?

I am completely with you on the concept that we will see a handful of 9.9's within 5 years. OK. How is this going to happen? We've discussed pressing, and the fact that the micro defects that separate 9.9s from 9.8s are near universally not pressable. CGC has been up and running 10 years. Hulk 181 is one of the most subbed books. One 9.9 has been graded. Dealers and collectors have subbed the low hanging fruit. So where do you see these 9.9s coming from. From the increasing pool of 9.8's. (thumbs u We discussed this just a couple of pages back. Pressing a book into a 9.9 simply isn't possible all that often as the issues that separate a book from the 9.9 grade aren't the kind of issues that can be pressed out. Don't confuse me with facts. I still like my odds.

I thought that it's possible for CGC to reconsider their grade at a future time? The great aspect to the discussion is that your thesis or my intuition will be proven to be right. Time will tell.

I see the numbers of 9.8's growing and too little reason why one or two won't move up to the vaulted class? Will there be a debate on the merit of calling the newly crowned books a 9.9? Absolutely. I would argue that the debate is a political decision and not about the merits of a comics grade.

If the book was mine the bid would be above $100K by now.
