Can i get some help on grading this? Marvel Spotlight 5

17 posts in this topic

Hello, I was told it's 'easier' for ya'll to help me get a more accurate grade if i tell you all the defects that I know of... so here goes... I'm not sure if this is a defect in printing or what but there's some kind of blue ink/dye all around the outside ONLY of the pages. I've included pictures to show you. Top and bottom of spine has rounded corners(Front Cover). Top right corner of spine(On Back Cover) has a small crease, and that blue ink/dye is around the edges of the back cover. Here's the scans, let me know. Thanks. Also is this dye a defect in printing? and also does it affect it's grade since the cover and inside isn't affected? Thanks

Cant see the spine on fc scan. Ink is from the distributor I'd think

Actually that IS the spine on the front cover, it's not cut off. I can scan it the other way if you'd like tho. If you look at the back cover the rest is there. Looks like they didn't center the cover very well when they made this one. It doesn't look bad from where the pages side but you can tell it's off center by the picture (Almost a wanna be wrap around cover! lol). But one of the other board members told me that that was a common thing back then... Idk :)

Let me know if you want me to scan it the other way, or crop it more and post that!

You're the ONLY response i've gottn so far so i'm willing to please your 'needs' for me to get some kinda grade on it!

Thanks again for your help,

Jer

It's distributor's ink.

I remember a dealer at the Chicago Comicon in the late 1980's who had purchased Robert Bell's warehouse stock of bronze age Marvel comics and was selling them for $1 each. I came home whith a huge stack of them, all with that blue ink around the edges. (Always blue, which makes me wonder if the ink served some purpose other than distributor's stock rotation.)

Distributor's ink can affect the grade, but it is usually more of a concern on high grade books, or if it is accidently sprayed onto the cover excessively.

Your comic looks to be a solid VG 4.0 to me, possibly a 4.5, but I suspect that the overspray on the back cover might prevent it from going higher than that. It's still a very decent looking book.

WOW! why so low? is it only because of the blue ink?

To a point. When the ink starts to bleed into the cover and noit just the edges it will affect the grade. This books has a TON of ink on it. I can't tell from the scans what the book is structurally but my guess is if were a 9.0 without the ink it might get knocked down to 7.0/7.5 due to this much ink.

Your pictures of the front and back are cropped. That means that the corners and edges are not in the pictures. It makes it difficult to grade.Thanks.Dan

Humm... I did what they told me to do?! I'm new to this scanning. Tell me if i'm doing it wrong. I put it in the scanner, push it a little bit away from the edges and then put a piece of white paper behind it so you can see the corners. Then i close the lid and click preview. Then when the outline shows up around the comic I stretch it out a little bit outside the comic onto the white paper. Then hit scan... is that wrong?? (shrug)

I had a stack of Marvel Spotlight #2's with purple dist ink at least this bad. My 9.2 (structurally) copies got 8.0-8.5 from CGC, so if the spine is clean on this one, I would think it grades at 7.5 to 8.0.
Thats more what I was thinking 7.5 ish imo

Someone just suggested I use colored paper to offset it instead of white paper... I'll try that next. HOPEFULLY it'll work 'better'?? (shrug)
