Legion Lost #1, that's kinda new ooo.gif

Your missing Half the Scribbly run, I have always heard that that is a great run. If they ever reprinted the entire run in a Archive edition, I would buy it, I love Sheldon Meyer.

Just out of curiosity ...

What was the most expensive book you bought?

What was the hardest one to find so far from the ones you have?

Which set is your favorite?

Have you read them all?

What is your most valuable (by guide standards) book?

What do you plan to do with the set when your time on this planet is done?

Unfortunately they're impossible.

Anyone with a full set of all fifteen Scribblys certainly gets my admiration.

What sorts of conditions are you looking for?

Low affordable grades and restored. I can't afford high grades to finish it off unless they're cheap (Funnies and Romance are under a hundred bucks even in 9.0). I thought I was getting a restored Detective 27 for $23000 but it fell through.

My friend who owns a comic store says Legion Lost 1 is IMPOSSIBLE to find as nobody ordered it.

But WHY when I've got the other eleven issues ??????

Pure speculation on my part as I've not really been paying attention to the Legion since Crisis (and therefore don't have a copy frown.gif ) But I imagine there are a relatively large number of Legion fanatics who

a) got really tired of the constant re-boots

b) saw Legion Lost #1 as just another in a series of failed new approaches

c) didn't bother to order #1

d) thumbed through it or a later issue and then scurried around gathering up #1 to catch up.

Rabid Legion fans are a breed apart. Why else would the Amazing World of DC fanzine with Legion command 10x its surrounding issues? confused-smiley-013.gif

I have one, and it was a GREAT story (the entire mini series that is) I would just give it to you if I wasn't a Legion completist.

lol. That's right.. tease the guy when he's so close to the finish line.

I actually dropped an email to Dan Abnett who I think wrote the issue to see if he had any extra copies, but I don't think the email got to him. Don't a lot of the DC talent and editors receive a copy of every DC comic issued each month?

I did pick up several hundred Legion issues and series about half a year ago. I'll look to see if I actually have it once I get the books out of storage. The cover looks familiar...

For the record, I visited Ian's house today. Ian's quest may have monopolized these boards, nay dominated them lo these past couple of weeks, but it has to be said, the man doth walk the walk.

As a forty year old who's been collecting for thirty years and dealing for ten, I kind of thought that I'd been there and done that when it came to this hobby.

HIs house is a shrine to archivism. And as for the collection, well it would be unusual even for those at the top of the food chain (i.e. Fishler, Geppi, or Parrino) to hold an unbroken run of Action 1-25 in their hands. Or an unbroken run of (almost) ANY DC comic you care to mention. New Fun? No problem. Danger Trail? Right here. Sensation Comics? Fat and Slat? Rudolph? Flash? All Star? Phantom Stranger? Rip Hunter Time Waster? Got 'em all. Giveaways, promotional comics, mini-comics, one shots. Action from 1 to the present. All ages accounted for. Even the first comic he ever bought (I think it was a J.L.A. 7), which he got off the newstand when it came out. It's enough to make a grown man gush and burble.

Some series, as Ian pointed out, were easier to acquire than others. Batman, most Silver Age titles (even Showcase!) are not that hard to find if you know where to look (and of course, have the requisite capital). Some books had been found three decades ago by Ian that have never been seen by anyone since their acquisition. Inevitably there were books that were blank spaces in Gerber. Altogether it was an Aladdin's cave. And I've seen a few decent collections and dealers displays in my time.

All in all it's a collection that's worthy of at least one T.V. documentary - but Ian mentioned that he'd rather decline such a thing. I can't honestly blame him, there.

Ian, you are wired. Excelsior!

I tried to find the Fat And Slat Joke Book to show Paul Gambaccini last Sunday, but couldn't remember which shelf it was on.

Then by luck I stumbled across it while you were here.

I don't think you'll see another one of those in a hurry.

What did you think of those early Detectives and mostly high grades ??????

Those early Detectives are, IMHO, some of the best Golden Age covers ever (along with those Baily More Fun Spectre covers) - so naturally awe was in abundance. I was indeed impressed with the grade of some of those gems, which included #s 1,8,18, 31,33,38. All classics, and better in the flesh. Nevertheless, a tough set to complete - the ones still needed are rather primo. thumbsup2.gif

Anyone got a spare Detective Comics 27? confused.gif

Thanks for the description of the visit. I'm sure it was pretty awe inspiring.

Some questions:

Are your comics insured? What about fire, security, etc?

How are they stored? Everything in Mylar with buffered boards? Has anyone done an article about your quest recently with photos? Have you had detailed digital photos taken of some of the rare covers?

If I were doing something along these lines, I'd probably have to build a climate controlled vault of some sort.

Ian - I can, without much difficulty, source you the very early Detectives. They will not be cheap, but I know where I can get them. I also know where there's a NICE Detective 27 that is CGC downgraded because it is missing a coupon on the back cover. I believe the price on it is in the low $30s. Let me know if you're interested and I can pursue with these guys.
