What's in a (certification) number?

This is my first post to the boards (I've been prowling for a while), and I am fairly new to CGC graded books, though I've been actively collecting comics since my (ancient history) teens.

 

I wonder if some useful bit of information can be gleaned from a CGC certification number ... they surely don't look like a simple sequence to me so there must be some rationale behind.

 

Is it possible to e.g. extract the certification date from the CGC certification number?

Yes, you can get a good deal of info about the book itself. If you're a member of the Collector's Society you can even look up the certs on line. Here's an example of one of my books:

that's exactly what I need ... BUT ... I am a member of the Collectors' Society (currently working on 5 sets) and though I searched the site I couldn't find the "CERTIFICATION NUMBER LOOK UP" you refer to.

 

Am I missing something?

Click the comics tab all the way at the top

Hit Grading & Submissions

There you will find Cert Lookup

 

You need the cert number, issue number and grade.
