McFarlane Spideys

11 posts in this topic

I'm looking at trying to get as much of Todds Spidey work as I can.

Is there anyone here that can post a list of McFarlanes work on any Spidey issues other than his #298 to #328 run on Amazing and the 90s Spider-Man.

I know he did a cover for ASM: Skating on thin ice??

I think I've seen some Marvel Tales covers, how many did he do, issue numbers etc??

Anything I've missed?

Thanks

Actually, he didn't do Detective #575. Alan Davis did the artwork on that one and was actually supposed to do the entire Year Two run, but had to jump. That's when McFarlane took over for the next three issues.

Thanks for the list. All-Star Squadron. Is that you think to become a valuable book given it was his first. Don't know much about that series. thx hi.gif

Good series, worth less than Greggy's dignity, buy it. You'll like it.

I was at first a bit surprised that market prices for McFarlane Spideys fell so hard, but then I remembered that the print runs were HUGE back then and of course collectors protected most every copy, so they are probably 95% NM as well. I though McFarlane drew a great Spider-Man even though the stories didn't do much for me in AMS or in the regular S-M title when he took it over.

Thank goodness less great artists are feeling compelled to write, these days. The end of John Byrne for me was when he took over FF. The art was nice, but the stories were unreadable to me. Same with McFarlane and others. Although I have to admit that the Larsen's Savage Dragon was fun...but I digress...

IThe end of John Byrne for me was when he took over FF. The art was nice, but the stories were unreadable to me.

Same here, and although I liked the early stories (esp. the Galactus ones), I felt his art took a serious nose-dive once he took on writing and inking as well.

You could look at a panel in X-Men and see tiny people in the background, woodgrain finishes, granite, cars and other nice touches, and there was a real sense of scale with tons of detail per panel.

But once he took on the title of "creator", everything "blew up", his faces and bodies grew larger, the background details totally disappeared, and it looked like he was hacking out the art as quickly as he could. This got even worse in Alpha Flight, and that was the point where Byrne: The Successor to Adams, stopped being a reality.
