Con sketches and commissions.

When you approach an artist at a Con or concerning a possible commission how do you go about asking for what you want? Can an artist draw pretty much whatever they want for you or do they have to stick with certain characters, etc?

No real rules, just ask politely and see what they say. Some artists will draw anything if you provide references, while others like to stick with what they know.

When should I come back or (if you don't want) Say, ok let me get back to you .

 

 

sometimes if you have a small sketchbook or something, they will do a free quickie. You ask along the lines of "could I get a quick little headsketch?". If creator doesn't quote a price, then 95% of time it's free. Make sure you go wow and thank them profusely for doing the sketch for you.
