Ok, am I the only one who thinks that $23,000 for the first TMNT #1 9.8 offered for sale was lower than you had envisioned? I might have been off my rocker with $32,000.....but come on, not even $25,000? I think the buyer made a SMART purchase. I am now officially pissed at myself for not bidding more as I stare at the book.

"Spoon" me in the goat butt!!

I think the seller got a total bargain. If I had the money to drop I would have outbid $23k

Thanks and thanks! I figured that since I probably will never be able to afford a true gold edition of Turtlemania, the proof is the very best I could do.

I wonder what the sketch was on the back??

What an exciting night for all TMNT fans. To see the granddaddy of them all sold for such a high amount...I think, even though we all (except 1) didn't get it, we can be excited that our passion was respected, and represented, very well tonight.

Nice pickup. I was going to go after those covers but decided not to at the last minute. I say frame it up on the wall and enjoy :)

I thought it was going to hit $25k, so $23k wasn't that far off the mark - but I also think that Pedigree isn't really the place to auction off your top census CA books; if this book had been on Comiclink I'm fairly confident it would have done better.

You are 100% correct! It was a great night for all TMNT fans with ALL of those turtle books. The #1 sale was awesome for the first sale of a 9.8

I'm just pouting and stuck in my coveted hindsight mode.

Thank-you I feel better!! You know what, with a book like that, you are probably right with it being on C-Link. The buyer though, is probably happy it went just the way it did.

I just can't get over that it went for sub $25,000. I should have begged & bartered harder with the Mrs. (Or just have been smarter and never told her about it and bid until I won)

You bet I am! I had the exact opposite reaction in the final moments. I wasn't going to budge, but, then, I did. Hah! Will definitely be something I cherish for a long time. Ever since '07, when I first learned of the elusive Turtlemania Specials, I have been, for lack of a better term, obsessed with collecting this book, much to the chagrin of my TMNT series collecting side. Even though my wallet doesn't share the same proclivities.

Wonder what the odds are the buyer is going to drop it on C-link and make a quick 5 grand profit?

Buying a 9.8 TMNT just to make a 5 grand profit?!?!...seems like such a waste of resources. There are easier ways. It wouldn't surprise me though to see this book, and the other 9.8, handled by many different hands in the next couple months until it, rightfully, gets a nice home with a loving fan.

In that case, it sounds like this really went to the right person. :luhv:

Man i got swamped at work and totally forgot the auctions were ending today. I would have been all over the number 2. 2-4 went dirt cheap.

As for the number 1, totally out of my price range but dang what a great buy at that price for the person who picked it up.

Exciting night indeed!

I, for one, am not that shocked it went for what it did. I remember when the lone #1 9.8 came out the consensus (as I recall) was that it would sell for at least 25K. Seeing as how there's 2 now (and maybe more in the future...?) it doesn't surprise me all that much. That said, I think it was a great pickup. I think Pedigree was the absolute wrong place to sell the book and if it had been on heritage would have done much better (Pedigree is a great place for certain types of books, just not turtles). Also keep in mind that if just one other bidder had been in the game, it could have gone for MUCH higher...who knows the winner may have had a 30-40K max on it. Either way, great sale! (And Eric, I am very disappointed in you. This should have been YOUR book!! :sumo: )

Most of the other books were STEALS (the #3 varaint was strong), everybody was focusing so much on the #1 that people didn't realize the other purdy books...

I also think those cover proofs were very nice pickups. Simply never see those around, esp. that gold.

Recently (past year or two) I've seen a downward trend in the prices for #1's, and maybe some other turtle books. Anyone else notice this? Any clues on reasons why?

More supply than demand/turtle fans are too rare? Times are tough?

Maybe it's just time to buy?

I think its mostly more supply and less hype right now. People are not talking about the movie at the moment and the mirage sale has gone through.

Also, I don't believe it helps that a lot of "lesser" copies seem to had gone up for sale for awhile. Off-white pages and stuff like that. Turtle collectors generally are picky about the books and superior copies tend to sell for a premium.

If you look at GPA for the HG books they have shown softer sales, but the mid grades and been firm. Those books are less affected by increase in supply and people generally pay smaller premiums for page quality, are less picky about if they are signed, etc.

Long term TMNT I still believe is one of the best comic investments out there. Even with some books coming out of the woodwork, the census is relatively small for books historical significance and popularity.

I got the Turtlemania Special white edition. And the Gold edition's proof.

God, I wanted the Gold sketch version so bad. But it was clear, with the end price of the 9.2 sale a while back, that this gold wouldn't sell unless it gained over 4 grand in the final moments...an unlikely thing.

By the way, nice to meet you all, very much digitally. ("Cred" info: born in '83. The usual story--Turtles fan my whole life. Toys, comics, posters, cartoon, comics.... :blahblah:

I was your rival bidder on that Turtlemania Gold proof. Trying to sneak in at the last minute. :baiting:lol

I'll make you a deal. I ended up with both Silver proofs (the white didn't hold much interest to me as it wasn't marked as a proof or signed off on it as such). If I ever decide to sell, I'd be happy to let you be the first to know if you do the same for me for your Gold proof (or the Turtlemania 9.8, for that matter). Let me know.

My estimate was $20-25K for a baseline estimate on the price of a #1 in 9.8 with a with the potential to go over $30K in the right scenario. Heritage would have fetched a better price (in my opinion), but the book ended right where I thought it would on the low end. It was fun to watch

As for the #2,3,and 4, I think that most TMNT comic collectors use Ebay to find books as opposed to specialized dealer sites. That coupled with the fact that census numbers for the early issues have been on a pretty rapid rise in the last year. The #2 was the furthest under GPA, but the price isn't unheard of. I paid slightly more for a lot on ebay of other TMNT books that included a #2 9.8 with White pages, so $200 for a 9.8 with Off-White pages doesn't seem that outlandish, especially when most of the people who would normally buy it (people who use ebay and nothing else) likely didn't know the book was even selling. #3 and #4 weren't that far off of GPA.

Very fun auction to watch! I'm curious about the Turtlemania Gold book. 1) I want to see the sketch on the back and 2) Since reserve wasn't met, I wonder what will happen with it now?

Congrats on the Silver proofs! If only the gold had a sketch like that silver had the sigs!! And you got yourself a deal.

I want to see the sketch on the back

I thought that too. If we could have actually seen the sketch on the back I'm sure it would have increased the bids. I actually wrote an email to Doug at Pedigree suggesting that he allow, or program the ability to show, two images -- front and back -- of the slabs.

If you're curious about the gold Turtlemania, in a buying sort of way, contact the store pastpresentfuturecomics on Ebay. I compared the serial numbers of new slabs of 9.8s and a 9.6 of Turtlemania that he had on Ebay with those Turtlemanias in the Pedigree auction. The numbers are consecutive. I am 100% confident he is the owner of the Gold Turtlemania (and was of the Silver and white one---and the proofs). I communicated with him about the origin of these books. This was his message to me, verbatim:

"The origin was a avid collector kept these books from the show in Broward county in 1986 til now. It was unusual but he bought them and never touched them until he sold them to us in April of this year. A collection of this caliber may never surface again."

His name is Mark. Real nice guy.

Danny,

Too be honest I did not watch it the last three hours cause I ASSumed it would go to $30,000 and out of my price range. So I closed my laptop and walked away cause I really wanted that book so I couldn't bare to watch it. When I opened it after auctions end, I thought it was a glitch and refreshed it.....three times when I put it together, I was so angry and upset I said things that would make a dirty pirate hooker blush. I have been upset at losing out on books before (quite a few, like anybody) but not mad like this one, since it was my own stupid doing.

I finally am cooled down and if I would have kept bidding over Sanj Mitra, than who knows I and the winner might have made it go over the $30,000. At least that is what I tell myself.

I f***ked up - plain and simple. The buyer is a lucky person imho, fantastic job and book - hats off.
