Story goes that it is a memorial to a climber who died up there, another climber who lives in nearby Threlkeld, climbed Blencathra hundreds of times, each time he went up he took a Quartzite stone up with him and formed this cross, this is one of many memorials scattered about the fells.

Awesome day in the Lake District today, Base Brown, Green Gable and Great Gable climbed, then home for a few beers in the garden, my idea of a perfect day.... well! That and a barbecue.
